Hi everyone. I was looking to get better poker chips for our weekly game. I currently use the typical cheap plastic dice poker chips. One of our players brought over his chips one night and they were really nice to play with. Been browsing here for a few days now. You all have very nice poker chip sets. I looking forward to joining the club!

Welcome to the site and enjoy the journey, I think most of us started with dice chips!

Welcome to PCF!

sure, we did Tommy !
Welcome Mark,

What am I being accused of? LOL

I remember having cardboard type poker chips when I was about 8 or 9 years old.
Something like these, I think the design on them were different though.

Then these....

Then dice chips before I bought Vineyards from the original seller back in 95/96 I think. The rest is history.

Mark -- Welcome to PCF. You'll find plenty of good advice and a wealth of chip info here as you search out that "perfect" set. (Most of us are still looking.)

Good luck and enjoy the search.

Since I had no proof, I should have not said that !

Apache has better prices on those home Paulsons. Great rep in the community:

I personally dodged the dice chip bullet, though my early games did use friends' dice chips. Went straight to used casino Paulsons. Would have saved on shipping if I had planned my breakdown for more than a bare minimum of chips though...

I also skirted the dice chip monster, and began with custom ABS chips. I added some dice chips and quickly labeled them when the game started growing too quickly, but only 2 or 3 chips were needed that night.

Then I added ceramics.

Then I added Milanos.

Then I added Custom China Clays.

Then I ordered Custom Clay.

Now I'm broke. :(

I don't know where you are in Ohio. But I'm about to post some sets from the Grand Victoria, Rising Sun Indiana.

Welcome aboard Mark! I definitely recommend getting chips that have denominations on them. That way you won't have to deal with people asking "how much are these worth?" over and over throughout the night, slowing down your game.

I'd also avoid using chips that are unnecessary. Examples would be having:

$25 Tournament Chip
$50 Tournament Chip
$100 Tournament Chip

You don't need that $50 tourney chip in the mix, just use the 25 and 100 value chips.

Likewise in a cash game some people have quarter and half-dollar chips in the mix, just one or the other, no need for both.

Before I get off on too much of a tangent, this is your intro thread, so I'll wait until you post in the chip section looking for advice on a set before going further. Make sure to include your budget and the # of players you expect to help us help you!

Welcome, Mark!

I'm sure you'll get lots of great ideas here.

My first real chips were Nexgen series 8000. I was thinking of getting some custom labels made but a very wise friend of mine suggested that I save my money for the inevitable next purchase of better chips. I made do, and before a year had passed I bought my first set of Paulsons, the original Pharaoh's chips. I've purchased several sets since then, including two relatively large sets of custom chips.

Enjoy the ride. The hunt for the perfect set is almost as much fun as actually playing with them.

Thanks for all the kind welcomes and helpful info. I'll keep an eye out HQ. I'm near Middletown.
