Hello from Germany.

new to this space, I'm reading and learning here a lot. Great forum.

Learning about collectability of Paulson chips: Authentic casino chips vs series designed for home use.
I plan to buy what I like but it would be good to understand the market a little bit. Knowing what to care for before making a purchase.

What might be potential "sleepers"? What's your guess?

As a new member I see "You have insufficient privileges to reply here." very often.
But I'm allowed to say thank you all for the warm welcome. ;)

Guten tag und willkommen!

Nice to see some more fellow idiots from northern Europe! Lot’s of awesome countrymen here that I’m sure will help guide you down the rabbit hole and bluff you off your money at German meet-ups for that matter. Yes, I’m talking about you @JackDeRke @OfficerLovejoy ! A word of advice, just don’t let them talk you into playing Omaha.

Lovely. So 10€/10€ blinds and off we go ;)

Kidding obv. Well if you ever want to play we play pretty regularly in out online homegame 10/20ct with 40€ buyin :) will be fun. Usually play Sunday evening.
Thank you very much. I think I should first improve my rusty skills...

I'm here more for my interest in learning about poker chips than in actually playing. Sounds strange but that's the way it currently is.

Honestly I've heard that more then I'd like to admit xD
Well they have a great purpose for replacing Monopoly money when playing to so they are multi purpose. It's just quicker with chips then with cash :D

Hi Folks,

I've read and learned a bit but still a long way to go... And I still have some restrictions and can't post in the Classifieds section. So I post my newbie thoughts and questions here that comes to my mind:

1. I want to focus my new adventure to used / obsolete casino chips from Paulson.
I assume that the now discontinued consumer products from Paulson have become unreachable for me.

2. Being only an occasionally player, I'm looking for cash game sets.

3. Samples might be helpful finding out about the different chips and designs (molds, inlays... lead/no lead).

4. Is there an online price guide / database available that gives a rough guidance?
Is there a way to find out about how many chips from a casino have been produces or are in circulation?

5. What sets to go in 2022 as a newbie and WHY? Horseshoe, Jacks? Currently available for "low" prices appears the Majestic Star (but often heavily used).
All are "only" RHC witch I like.
It appears that THC is more desirable (potentially resulting in more stable value). So the logical question is: What's a good THC set for starters? Maybe I do overthink this and will go with what comes to market and roughly fits my needs...

6. Sadly, I've missed the TCR sales. What's the chances for new sales from that source?

Hurray, one more post added and I hope you enjoyed the newbie content. ;)

I will try to answer this in more length later, but I just wanna quickly say that there is an auction to follow right now that will give a good indication of what a real casino THC set might cost you.

Not unreachable but definitely difficult (expensive). I assembled a cashset of the WTHCs last year (and subsequently sold). It wasn’t cheap but didn’t take that long. The CDI05s/Pharaos/Classics/NPS on the less desirable ”paulson chips mold” come up for sale once in a while and there are a few others, but I would say more scarce.

2. Being only an occasionally player, I'm looking for cash game sets.
A good thing if you want to go after paulsons as the higher denoms used in tourney sets come with a hefty price tag.

3. Samples might be helpful finding out about the different chips and designs (molds, inlays... lead/no lead).

Meh, if you’re set on paulsons and know the differencies between RHC and THC, the rest is mostly design preference.

4. Is there an online price guide / database available that gives a rough guidance?

Not really, best way is to search the classifieds for past sales or ask senior members. eBay is NOT a good price indicator nor is single chip prices. Singles always fetch higher prices than sets do per chip. I will say that I believe that the constant increase in paulson chip prices the last few years seems to have slowed down a bit.

THCs are the premium, yes, and especially so the leaded variety. Can’t really say much about a potentially good THC starter set. I guess one that is heavily used, but you’re still gonna pay quite a bit.

If you’re set on a specific set you want, expect that it may take time to assemble piece by piece. Make a wanted ad and hope for the best. Or like you said, just go with what the market offers that you like and roughly fit your needs. You can always add on by piecing together or trading with others.

6. Sadly, I've missed the TCR sales. What's the chances for new sales from that source?

There are rumors that a sale might be coming. Though it’s only speculating, based on casinos closing in an area where TCR-Jim has been able to score the chips before.

As usual @Eriks already explained pretty much everything when I join a thread late and feel like helping out a fellow German. ;)

You seem to have a good grasp of what options are out there already. Now it's time to figure out how much you're willing to spend.

You can piece together a mixed THC set by monitoring the classifieds and try to score some good deals. You'll get a feel for the prices after a while.
Get a reshipper before making your first purchase though! That would be a US based chipper who collects your purchases until you have enough to fill a box to have sent to Germany in one go.
A wanted ad for a reshipper worked like a charm for me. There are so many great chippers on here who really go above and beyond just so us idiots from northern Europe get to enjoy some quality clay discs.
 @arch3r

Feel free to hit me up with a pm anytime if you have further questions.

First of all thanks for the helping hand and pointing out some helpful aspects.

I didn't know there was such a hefty price difference THC > RHC.

Then maybe it's wise to go for a RHC set to be used for playing.
And later on after more reading and learning try to find a nice THC set.
It appears to me that THC sets in mint to good condition might be better to have on display and enjoy without using anymore to retain their value.

This leads me to this set of question:
Are THC sets discontinued? If so when was the last year of production?
RHC set appear to be the modern substitution for the THC, then. Or is it just that Casinos choose RHC over THC these days maybe because of a more attractive price?
And found an interesting thread here about THC mold chips going extinct.

@OfficerLovejoy using a reshipper is a great idea when multiple purchases are required. I have no idea what the chances are to find a playable set in one go. At this moment, I would prefer to find a matching set with a single purchase, though.

RHCs are definitely getting up there in price as well but the THCs are a different beast all together. Interesting thread about the THCs btw. It’s still used by some casinos but RHC or different house molds are definitely more common.

I should probably shut up about it since I don’t want more competition but there are other clay options as well:

Blue chip company or BCC (my favorites)
No longer in business but they pop up for sale in the classifieds from time to time. Mostly fantasy sets. Have been grossly under valued but more and more are starting to appreciate them and prices have been going up.

TR Kings
Also not in business anymore. Produced absolutely killer sets both to casinos and the public. People debate whether leaded THCs or leaded TR Kings are the number one chips.

I’m like you, I prefer to take a deep breath and pull the trigger on a full finished playable set right away, but sometimes it’s just not possible. Anyway, happy hunting and feel free to reach out if you need any assistance.

I hope it works out like that!

You might find though that even if you find that one set perfectly sized for your particular game, there is always something else that seems worth owning right around the corner... At least if you're like most of us degenerates on this site. ;)
