Hello all members!

I've been lurking the site for the last couple of months as I have developed a newfound curiosity for poker chips.
"Get out while you're ahead!" I hear you scream.
"Curb the desire and save yourself some money" I hear others shout...
I guess it's too late, I've joined PCF! And what an amazing educational resource you guys have going here.

I guess my interest began in my early 20s when I began going to the Barcelona Casino with friends at the weekend. We played roulette and blackjack but the feeling of having chips in the hand was magical. Fast-forward 10 years to now and I spot some cheapish clay slugged Montecarlo's on a Craigslist equivalent, and after browsing PCF casually, now I'm looking at Paulsons and want to bring myself back down to reality.

Unpopular opinion nº1: I'm not a big fan of the design of the Paulsons, yet I think my OCD will love the almost-perfect stickability I understand you get with them. Yes, I would save myself some time & money by skipping the dice chips and other nasties, however I can see this becoming an expensive hobby and habit.

Unpopular opinion nº2: I still think some versions of the average grade Montecarlos are rather attractive, and would like to get them anyway as a workhorse set for cash games with my clumsy friends.

In the meantime, I will continue to search for my "perfect" first set. Ideally I want something that can be used for cash games and invest in a nice tourney set at a later date. I'm struggling with choosing the right denominations but from what I can see in the forum, each to his own and choose what feels right.

At the moment I'm thinking of getting some Montecarlo .25s, .50s, 1s, 5s, 10s, 25s, 100s for cash games. 1000 chips might be overkill (max 6 or 8 players) but I like the idea of having a large amount of chips on the table.

I'm looking forward to furthering my poker chip education with the combined knowledge of this site, and use it to inspire and educate others on the wonderful world of chips.

Let me know your thoughts!

Love from your newest member.

Hello and welcome!

I find that our European chip friends are more accepting and appreciative of high end plastic chips like those made by B&G and Abbiati, etc. You should not discount them, especially if you can find good deals.

.50s and 10s are overkill, maybe the 100s, depending on play, put that € to a better use.

Here’s the PCF 600 (.25/1/5/25) covering a single-table cash set (.25/.50 to 1/2): 100/200/260/40
Alternatively: 100/300/160/40 for lower blinds.

+ Matsui

Thank you very much for your warm welcome and comments thus far.

I had not thought about Matsui or Abbiati and both seem like they could be very viable options.

I think @warma ‘s comment on denominations is great advice. I am tempted to go with .25, 1, 5, 25 in a 100/200/260/40 distribution. It makes sense to be honest.

@orsonberger is right about getting samples. Do you order samples directly from the manufacturers or do you need to go via a distributor? If anyone knows of any trusted dealers here in europe please let us know!
