Hi group! I am new to playing poker but have been learning a ton. forgive my naiveness in any questions i ask... I am talking with my friends about organizing a poker group and would appreciate any advice...
Thank you,

Welcome. This place is full of it.... I mean to say, poker advise, chip advise, buying, selling, a lot to do about nothing... and so on...

I started my poker group with paper cards, dice chips and a foldable table topper, but upgrades were needed.

Are you looking to start a cash game group, or tournaments?

I'd suggest written rules (Roberts Rules of Poker will suffice) to address any confusion before the situation happens.

A good game will grow on its own.

I am just thinking about having a reasonable buy in... 20 and a set number of people (10 max) per night... most have families and obligations so having 30 or so to pull from will help with making sure we have enough to make it worth it. Maybe having a yearly tournament would be fun but also having the flexibility to have a small cash game from time to time.....

I have some nice Copag plastic cards and am going to buy some milano's... I am thinking about having 750 in the following breakdown:
25 cents - 25
50 cents - 25
$1 - 100
$5 - 125
$10 - 50
$25 - 125
$50 - 50
$100 - 100
$500 - 50
$1,000 - 50
$5,000 - 25
$10,000 - 25

I found them on pokerchipswholesale.com which will allow for a custom breakdown for $300 plus reasonable shipping....
What do you all think about the breakdown for maximum flexibility?

Looking at a folding poker table like the Barrington or the ESPN both around the same price, feedback?

I went looking for roberts rules of poker and can't find it... do you have an amazon link?

Copags are a decent start. Solid card (I love them) and durable as hell. Way better than paper cards, IMO. And reasonably priced at $15/set up.

You chip breakdown is inefficient. Don't need 50¢, $10 or $50 chips.

25¢, $1, $5, $25 for cash. $100, $500, $1000, $5000 for tourneys. Maybe even add a fifth tournament denom if they are available... $25,000.

I'd advise different cash and tournament sets, but if that's not an option right now, don't use the same denom in both games. That's why I suggest starting the tournament at $100 and capping the cash game at $25.

Barrington/ESPN table are fine... You could do worse. But you can build your own table for about $350 + a day of labor.

hum.. nah
plenty or post already cover the topic. Search a bit
first define the amount in play if you go CG.
Do not take consecutive values (ex:25c and 50c or 50c and $1)
plan for a Cash game : BBx100 AND x10 playes (i understand 10 players is your limit)
(it should be OK with 300 to 400 chips counting rebuys)

Concerning Tournament:
nah...
you do not need 10'000 if you stick to the basic 25/50 first level you only need 300 chips for a tournamnet of 10 players

$25 x8 (per player)
$100 x8 (per player)
$500 x4 (per player)
$1000 x7 (per player)

then for your full table then you'll need extra 20x $100 and 10x $1000 for chip up
There are plenty of structures around the net for different tournament lengths

Cash game 25¢ / 50¢ and 10'000 tournament for 700 chips

25 cents - 100
$1 - 150
$5 - 100
$25 - 100
$100 - 100
$500 - 50
$1,000 - 100

Barrington or the ESPN are the same, ESPN has lights built in. (leds on the rail)

Regarding the chip breakdown, since it is a set of 750 would you add 50 $5,000? or something else?

You can use 20x (or 40) 5000 for a 10 players tournament with rebuy /re-entry

For the remaining chips you can use extra $1 or $5 for your CG

Ok so I just placed my order..... I followed your advice as well as reading several posts on here including @Hobbyphilic webpage and youtube regarding breakdowns. I ordered the 750 set in the breakdown you suggested, but i also added some extra packs of 25 in the following denominations; 50 cents x 50, $10 x 50, $25 x 25, $50 x 25, $100 x 25, $10,000 x 25. I also ordered from apache poker some chipco racks to store them in. The idea is having a set that will cover all but to have some extra flexibility. Tournament starting stack of 12,12,7,5 sound like it could work for us noobs! LOL... thanks all!!! btw pokerchipswholesale.com has a 10% discount for first time orders "all-in"
