This summer my little brother is coming to visit and I would like to order a 400 piece custom set from CPC for him and I to split into two 200 piece heads-up sets. He just turned 18 and really took a liking to poker when he was here last summer. We would play best two-out-of-three heads-up tournaments almost every night. I just thought he would find it really neat if he and I were the only ones with this particular set.

I think I've got the breakdown where I want it, but I wanted to see if others might chime in with better advice. My current breakdown per set is:

40 x T5
60 x T25
80 x T100
20 x T500

We would probably be playing with T10k starting stacks, If you have any advice please feel free to let me know. Thanks!

Half the chips. My HU sets are a rack each:

T5000

T25 x 20
T100 x 20
T500 x 5

Remaining 10 chips are usually 5 x T100 and 5 x T500 for color up.

^^^^ That's exactly what I do but the 10 remaining chips are always T500 for color ups. 2 barrels of T25, 2 barrels of T100 and one barrel of T500 total.

Since it's CPC, it has to be one rack per denom and a minimum of 3 racks. 200 chips is a lot for a dedicated heads up set. That number of chips is fine for 4 or 5 players. That number of players tends to work better for cash games, so why not do two cash sets that can be combined if you guys are together. You could still use them for heads up games, but they'd be more flexible. You might even want to have a big brother, little brother set designed for different blinds (.5/.10 for him, .25/50 for you, with some shared denoms).

Possible Breakdown:
His set:
60 X .05
80 X .25
40 X 1
20 X 5

Your Set:
60 X .25
80 X 1
60 X 5

I'm pretty set on the tournament set. The only reason I want to do 400 chips total is so I can get four denominations.

I know you want to have heads-up sets, but since you're getting 400 chips in order to have four denoms, I'd say go ahead and make them playable tourney sets. I'd do this:

160 x 25
160 x 100
40 x 500
40 x 1000

You can break this in half, and you each have enough for a full-table (10-person) T3k starting stack (8,8,2,1), with enough extra T1000 run off all the T25 and T100... or 10 buy-ins of T4k (8,8,2,2) with no run-off.

When you get together, you can double the stack sizes, or support more players.

You can use either one of you sets for a variety of HU games with up to 100 chips each, since you have enough for T10k or T25k stacks (40, 40, 20, 10) or even T30K (80, 80, 20, 10) or T40K (80, 80, 20, 20, no run-offs.)

I like Mental's suggestion best.... building two 200-chip tourney sets that can be used either stand-alone or combined. You can go with his posted count numbers which will work great for a split 400-pc set with T25/T100/T500/T1000 denominations. If you really want a 400-pc set using T5 denominations, I'd probably go with this:

100 x T5
140 x T25
120 x T100
40 x T500

which is enough for ten T1800 stacks per 200-pc set (larger stacks or more players when combined), yet still allows heads-up play with up to T8K stacks per 200-pc set using the T25/T100/T500 chips.

One problem with your OP breakdown is that T5 chips really have no place in a 10K stack, heads-up or not -- even with 5/10 opening blinds, that's 1000BB. And don't you want each 200-pc set to be able to be used heads-up by itself? Your listed breakdown isn't capable of creating 10K stacks.

Most of my heads-up T10K tourney sets are usually:

40 x T25
40 x T100
10 x T500
10 x T1000

and multiplying those single-rack numbers by four, we get:

160 x T25
160 x T100
40 x T500
40 x T1000

... which just so happens to be the exact numbers recommended by Mental Nomad. That's what I would do. :)
