I’ve browsed this forum a bit and there’s mixed opinions on whether stacking racks can damage your chips. This led me to look for a storage option that avoid stacking, and I found this:

https://www.discountpokershop.com/1000-piece-aluminum-poker-chip-case-p-73.html

It looks like the cheap aluminium case my dice chips came with, but the description says it’s been “redesigned” - I’m sceptical. I also trust your reviews more than the ones on the site.

Besides this one, are there any good non-DIY storage/transportation options for 1000 chips (39mm) that do not involve stacking racks?

I would not trust that case to hold up to actual use. The Apache 4800 can hold 1000 chips. As far as not using racks, you can always use chip boxes instead, if you can get your hands on some.

Or go for cut foam. Always loved this case by @Matthew627 :

That looks amazing! Was hoping to discover a non-DIY option…if such a thing exists.

Versa cases are okay, but a Pelican-style case is much more sturdy, protective, flexible, and easy to configure to perfect fit your actual chip set. Pluck-n-pick foam is quick and easy to set up.

Look on Craigslist (assuming you have the equivalent) for a couple of months. Your bound to find a great deal on a useable Pelican and then go with the custom foam FTW. I’ve found 5-6 pelicans for ⅓ or less than the sticker price in like-new condition. Also have a few of the Paulson 1000 chip cases (wood and faux leather styles) but they’re few and far between and go for $80+ each.

First off, we’ve literally seen one or two examples of stacked racks damaging chips, from a large group of guys that have been stacking chips for 20+ years (not to mention that casinos have been doing it forever.). Don’t stack your chips in a greenhouse, and you’ll be fine.

As for that case, no, I don’t have experience with that particular case. But I’ve got enough experience to say that if you’re traveling around with that case you every week, no, it’s not going to last. If you’re using it for storage, so it sits on a shelf until you bring it to the table for a game, it will be fine and last a long time. If you’re somewhere in the middle, keep an eye on it, so when it fails, you don’t explode chips all over somebody’s driveway.

The back hinges can't be seen, and the front locks don't really look different from usual cheap ones.
The handle looks like rubbish.

I would only trust the Versa Deluxe 1000ct if you don't like using racks / cardboard boxes at all.
Or, even better, 2x Versa Deluxe 500ct if you plan to grow old :)(when holding at least 30 lbs by one arm will suck).

The 500ct, if optimised for just chips, removing the card decks section and using 4 SOFT plastic tubes, can carry 624 CPCs or 638-640 mint Paulsons.

I think I have 2 of the 500chip versions of this case. I can tell because they have the same goofy black accents on the corners. They're garbage.

They work for shelf storage and transport (using two hands to hold it) to your own gaming table, and that's about it.

One of the locks broke the first time I used it. Total crap.

And I wouldn't trust the hinges on a long haul or trip.

We recently did a complete move out of state... and all of my "clamshell" cases like these, Versa included, got strapped with two pieces of duct tape on the hinge side and the opening side for added security through our relocation process. That's how much I trust them.

I've also not had any issues storing or transporting in racks. I have a Member's Mark 16" case. The MM cases are less expensive Pelican clones that are perfectly fine for chip transport and as @BGinGA says it is very easy to configure the foam inserts. For 1,000 chips you probably want at least the 20" size. (I think I can get 1000 chips in mine if I take the foam out entirely.)

Ok definitely deciding between versa and a pick and pluck option now. Didn’t know it was that easy!

I also did not want to stack but I still use racks in my Apache. I bought flat bottom, low profile racks from @One Eyed Dollar and I have a layer of foam in between the two layers of chips. I even have them going in opposite directions. Sorry, don't have a photo of the foam layer, but it's the dense 1/4 inch black foam. This is an Apache 3800, but as others stated, the 4800 will easily hold 1000 chips.

Bottom racks.

I got 1200 in my 4800 just fine. I stacked mine, but I needed a 1/2 inch thick board under the bottom foam to prop them up high enough for the top of the case to hold them in place. I don't see why a 1/2 inch thick piece of foam in between the two layers of chips wouldn't be just as effective.

I have the MM cases, both 20" and 24" (with wheels). The 20" easily holds 5 racks across and 2 deep (1,000 chips), plus room for buttons, plaques, and cards, all held snug in foam. 43mm racks fit, too.

If you need a case for 500 chips go with the 500 Versa. It is the best case for the price. I have it for my samples and it is solid. I absolutely love it. It is sturdy and really good quality.
I have a 1,000 piece set. I bought the Apache 4800 and made my own and I love how it came out. I used black foam board so the racks aren’t sitting directly on the foam.
Don’t pay the extra money for the Pelican, you don’t need to. The Apache case is SOLID.
I have attached pictures of both cases.

I have that 1000 case and it’s great!

My only complaint is that the rows aren’t even 100. The case does hold more like 1100-ish but it’s super sturdy!
It bears repeating - Paulsons are thinner than cheap chips (and thinner than most expensive chips too.). So unless you’re buying a vintage case made for Paulsons, you can assume the case will hold 115% of its capacity, give or take, if you fill it with Paulsons.

https://www.jackspoker.com.au/the-viper-1000-chip-poker-case

Best 1000x case for (39mm x 3.3mm chip) transportation.

EDIT: this is priced in aussie dollars but shipping is still steep, at least it was AUD when I got mine before the pandemic

EDIT #2: The chips are stacked but they are not stacked like a rack of chips are, with all the pressure on top of all 100+100+100+100(4-racks high?) chips. This is spread out across a larger surface area. And the middle piece has divots underneath to 'snug-fit' over the tops of the bottom set of chips.

I would assume this case would make it almost impossible for chips to warp...?

I think I’m going the Apache route for my CPC set and for my Nevada Jack skulls. My Paulsons are in my Paulson case…no big deal, it’s just the cool way to do that lol, my cheaper ceramics from side pot are in the versa…all I have left is Apache (or similar).

I have an Apache 4800 case from Harbor Freight and it can easily hold 1000-1200 chips but can get a bit heavy. If you're stacking the chips only two trays high I wouldn't be concerned with damaging the chips.

Lately I have been more fond of the Nanuk cases you can get on Amazon. They are sturdy but a bit lighter. The Nanuk 910 can hold up to 600 chips if you put them into chip boxes and lie them on their side so with two of them it can easily hold 1000 chips plus some card decks. The two smaller cases split the weight and make it easier to carry.

My personal preference would be the 915 or 920 sizes, but they only hold 800 chips. I've bought a few off of the warehouse deals and they have come in like new condition.

This is a chip case I have used for a while now and I personally like it. I used it to store chips I used for an event I have 4x a year and never had a issue mine has 3 latches instead of 2 and it has held up for 6 years now. Again it’s only used 4x a year so keep that in mind and it’s extremely heavy for me at least lol so I use a cart.

Any pictures of the Nanuk cases with the poker chips in them?

I'm looking for a 1000 chip case too and I'm probably going to get this one. I'm using them for relatively cheap chips. I wouldn't carry this case by the handle. I'd probably two hand this case around or come up with some strap to have it tight. I own a 500 versa case and it's nice. The inside might have a few minor easy diy fixes. For the price I was expecting everything to be good (just nit picking kind of). If you have expensive chips I'd recommend getting the versa. It's durable and quality materials and parts. Given that a 1000 versa case is heavy with chips, I'd probably be two handing it anyways. I'm probably going to find a way to DIY strap mod this "cheap" case.
