Greetings all! Been lurking here for a little while picking up a lot of great tips on cleaning, oiling, and info about just chips in general. I was big into chipping during the boom, but life got in the way and it all kind of fell by the wayside. A couple months ago while sheltering, I pulled the ol’ chips out of the closet for a viewing and of course was instantly bit by the bug. Since then I’ve added 3 racks to the collection and the only thing that’s keeping this from an upward trend is the inventory!

Now with the introductions out of the way, onto the prOn:

Besides sample sets that is every chip that I own. :)

While lurking in the background I have discovered that there’s a lot of cool people on the forum...so I come to you cool people for a little guidance. Looking through the pics of my collection I’m sure you are recognizing a trend. I am from California and I love the Paulson THC chips. My goal when I started was to put together a set of tournament chips with only California Casino THC chips. Not knowing much about chips 20+ years ago...I believed my quest to be valiant although not well thought out. And that’s where you all come in. I need to figure out what is the best way to make all of these chips into a viable tournament set? Or should I consider making it into a cash set instead (not rich so will need to add fracs, and that decision might depend on the big news that Jim at The Chip Room is going to drop on Monday ;)). Or...is their a way to stretch the chips out enough (and add a little to it) to make a set of each (20 ppl tourney & 10 ppl cash game 40-60 buy in with maybe 1 re-buy). See?! I'm a friggin' mess and desperately need help! Any guidance would be appreciated! And thanks for taking the time to read through a madman's ramblings.

Wow, talk about a mixed set! THC, RHC, giant inlay, oversize, good-used through excellent condition. Everything still looks nice, though! I bet there are a few people that would kill for those VIneyard 100's....

I would keep these as cash. Fracs can be purchased (though can be expensive), or, more often, made (though can take some work).

Get yourself a purpose-built tournament set. Sales from The Chip Room might just be your gateway into economic hell chipping heaven!

Nice chips, I take it mixing THCs with RHCs doesn’t bother you? Admittedly, yellow Cali THCs are hard to find as Cali color sets are very popular around here

Keep it cash, tournaments are mostly crap anyways.

What are your chip totals are stakes?

Yeah...it got a little random. Back then I did not know there was a difference in the THC & RHC (and to be honest...besides the reverse hat & cane I'm still not understanding it) so I just collected Paulsons. The mixture between giant and regular inlays did throw me off along with the variance in condition, but back then the internet was still pretty new and there was not a lot of info out there on Califonia chips. Since I wanted each denomination to be from a different casino, I had limited choices. Back then I really like the graphics on the giant inlays but after combing through this forum I am defintely more appreciating the smaller and simpler inlays.

Been looking for fracs but for Cali THC they are few and far between and expensive. Although been worrying that doing that takes away from the authenticity of the set.

While I am definitely excited for The Chip Rooms announcement my bank account is a little worried! :) Thank you for the feedback!

Just searched the forum and am seeing a plethora of info on THC vs RHC. Was this forum around in 2000? If it was why did I not know about it?!

Got some reading to do...

Thanks! Yeah...back then I did not know there was a difference in the THC & RHC and as you see above I am just finally learning it. Seeing the difference now I would definitely prefer all THC, but that unfortunately isn't really an option. As you said finding replacement yellows would be tough and my Crystal Park's are in nicer condition then most my other chips (sans my minty Vineyards :)). And back then I was limited even further with a goal each of denomination coming from a different casino. So no...I don't think I have a problem with mixing the two. Do a lot of people on the forum have a problem/dislike doing that?

I definitely think cash is how I'm leaning.

My chip totals are as follows:

200 Vineyard $100
100 Eldorado $25
200 Crystal Park $5
200 Winner's Cup $5
100 Garden City $2
100 Ca Bell $1
300 Eldorado $1

Where are you in the bay? Lots of us chippers around, I’m in the city.

@RocAFella1 @kmccormick100 @RainmanTrail @Godzilla28 @sat guru @ovo are a few of our regs on here plus quite a few more

Nice! I'm in Redwood City. Good to see the Bay is well represented here! CA:hearts:

Cool. Love those Eldorado $25s.

Many here don’t like mixing different molds, including me but it’s not really that big of a deal unless you’re OCD hahaha. You can find Crystal Parks here fairly easily, I’d drop those Winner’s Cup for 2 more racks of CPs.

Cali fracs aren’t super hard to find either but can get pricey depending on condition and rarity of course. Could always mill and relabel some chips unless you really want real casino fracs.

You know...I really didn't have a problem with it unti it got brought up. Now it's all I can see and a little OCD is starting to kick in. I think you hit the nail on the head about the Winner's Circles. I really like it's inlay design but it's a little too big and I don't need 2 different $5. And definitely want to keep Cali yellow $5s. Wordering...with the jumbo inlays could the WCs be murdered/milled? Or maybe the correct question is should they not be murdered? Still learning the etiquette around that but it doesn't seem to be a very revered chip.

Sweet. Will definitely keep an eye out for them Cali fracs. Would prefer real casinos and want to start upgrading the condition, but of course can't get too pricey. And since I don't see hosting a game anytime in the near future due to Covid I have a little time to shop around. Will definitely keep the mill option as a close plan b.

Thanks again for the heads up on the Horseshoes. If you see any Cali fracs in the future that might fit my set please let me know. Fracs especially move quickly around these parts!

No reason you can't play a tournament with lower denominations. Just design a blind structure that works right, and it will play the same.
15 x 1
12 x 5
9 x 25
2 x 100
Now you've got starting stacks of 500 - start the blinds out at 1/2 and you've got 250bb stacks.
With your chips, that'll worth for a single table tournament. You could stretch it to two full tables with some minor tweaks.

Most here will frown on milling and relabeling real casino chips but it’s been done here and there but yeah, oversized inlays don’t really work for relabeling.

As far as fracs go, what’s your budget? You can post a wanted ad here and get offers in no time. Also look up Lakeshore Inn fracs, those are fairly plentiful for a Cali frac if you are okay with hotstamps

Gotcha. Yeah...I would have felt bad about milling those cause as I mentioned I am a big fan of the inlays, but I got them for a great price. Glad the oversized inlays make them bad milling candidates as that will keep me from getting tempted to try.

Never really thought of a range, but I guess it would all depend on the chip and their condition. Really like the CA Bell 50s but I think they'd be too expensive. Didn't really like hot stamps before but I am kind of warming up to them. The last Lakeshore 50 rack was mint and went for $340...which I guess would be doable in that condition, but would prefer inlays. Will definitely post an add once I figure out The Chip Room's sale.

If you're waiting for Cali fracs from the next chiproom sale, don't. Even if Jim scored Cali chips, fracs are tough to get through his sales. Usually a limited supply

Oh no...I was just waiting to see what the sale was in case. Might need that money to go towards a tournament set!

Good point. No re-buys...but I guess you could always chip up. It's definitely be doable as a starting point. Thanks to the tip!
