Growth of casinos in Asia (1 Viewer)

Yeah I find the somewhat recent rise of Macau super interesting. I remember years ago when many of the poker pros migrated over there and I was surprised. I think touring Macau would be an experience!

It is no walk in the park to get a visa to visit the USA from most Asian countries. Not only time consuming but potentially expensive. " oh, I think I'd like to gamble soon - fly to Macau this weekend or wait for a month+ to get a tourist visa which requires one or more trips to the appropriate consular office. Not much of a decision"

In addition, getting your money into and back out of the USA can be a issue. Perhaps not a likely problem, but why take the chance?

I am sure the staff at a Vegas casino/hotel is going to be polite, socially appropriate and culturally sensitive. Outside the door of the casino? Not so much.

Vegas is less about the gambling and more about the social venues now anyway. Sure you can still make big wagers and all that, but the night life rules the roost these days.

Traveling to Shanghai was eye opening to me. The Range Rover traffic jams and Louis Vuitton stores more prevalent than Starbucks are in the US. Plus dozens of cranes. China has money for sure. And I live in a wealthy area of the US. I’ve not been to Hong Kong but if I get the chance I will be going to Macau for certain.

Vegas is so much more fun than Macau. The vibe is so awesome in Vegas.

Macau feels more hardcore... like people are there to gamble... everyone is so serious... personally I don’t like it much.

But as far as facilities go.. Wynn Palace in Macau is the stone cold nuts.

Here’s a better question....are there any poker room managers shady enough to get us a VIP chip purchase in the neighborhood of 500,000 chips?!

why? just curious how they are different.

The vibe.

Macau feels like a place to go for hardcore gambling and high end dining. You just feel like money talks and BS walks. Every gambler feels serious... everyone wants to show off their Gucci and bling watches. You bring 50 thousand USD to gamble and feel like you just brought 300 bucks to Vegas. Families are far and few in between. It's like 75% male. Prostitution almost out in the open (less so nowadays, but the legacy is there). Saunas everywhere and you know what that means. Foot traffic outside the casinos is to just get from one place to the next (casino).

Vegas is just happening. You walk around there's loud music everywhere. Lots of casual gamblers actually having fun even if they are only winning small at the craps table. Lots of foot traffic on the strip where you can see lots of cool things outside. Family friendly. All types of shopping and not just LV and Hermes and Rolex. All types of food and not just fine dining. People actually use the pool!!

Having said all that... Macau is still a cool place to check out. If you plan on gambling, bring at least a few thousand USD cuz the min bets are very high especially on weekends and holidays.

Thanks for the detailed description and I understand. I watched a couple interviews with Dwan that made the Triton scene sound pretty friendly. However, it totally makes sense that the overall vibe is more serious because there is just so much more money on the line. Plus there is probably cultural differences. Maybe China doesn't have that culture where you fly to Macau with a few friends just to get out of line for a couple days. Honestly, for me gambling isn't even a priority when I go to Vegas. I just love doing some day drinking and sitting by the pool. Then when the sun goes down you can hit the town and goof around with friends. I find this new approach much more fun than when I was younger and would grind poker for 16 hours straight.

The above answers are all correct, but because of the plague now, there are few tourists.
