Get samples. For craps, I find texture to be especially important due to the nature of how you you stack and arrange the chips with odds, etc. nothing is worse than having your big stacks of dealer chips falling over. I ended up buying an more expensive set because I could afford it, but I was going to get China clays if I had to choose a more affordable set. I got lots of samples, and after comparing them all, felt those were the closest to “casino chips” in terms of size, weight, and performance. I didn’t like ceramics. But that’s just my opinion. This has been a great thread to help me think through some of the approaches to building a craps set, I appreciate all the posts here and detail. I need to really sit down and plan a set for craps, likely focused on a $200 buy in (tourney style, most likely, with "just for fun" buy in perhaps up to like $20 buy in not sure yet). Still considering a few of the options but I love the discussions of some of the chips I've run across elsewhere, like the Tiki Kings. Also feeling the Milanos right now, and I need to check out the Majestics. So many choices to work through, but I'm definitely locked on a less expensive set to start with, given the chip counts required for craps...
Being able to stack a chip in craps is super important and something that's kinda different than I think you'd see on a poker table for instance. The chips having enough texture not to slide is critical.Get samples. Thanks for the specifics, @JustDave. I'm familiar with the tikis but not with the abbiati - are those higher-end chips and/or unique enough to be difficult to find, or something I should potentially look at as well, given that I've been mostly focusing on china clay's so far due to price (majestics is what I hear about most of the time)?Being able to stack a chip in craps is super important and something that's kinda different than I think you'd see on a poker table for instance. I love my Matsuis as a poker chip, but they would be a nightmare for craps.
Might be parting with my tiki kinds and going full abbiati depending on breakdown given they stick to each other like rubber. We will see.
