What's up everyone!

I'm a college student from Utah looking to get more into poker. I've always wanted to get into poker as a kid (poker chips have always looked cool to me) and recently I've felt like I needed another hobby. Some other things I enjoy include playing guitar, reading books, and playing volleyball!

As you may know, it's illegal to gamble in Utah, but some friends and I want to start playing small stakes cash games and organizing tourneys. I'm very excited to become a part of PCF. I've already learned so much about blind structures and progressions from the beginner threads, as well as some economical (or not so economical) options for getting chips. Thanks!

Poker and poker chips are both very fun hobbies! Welcome and hello!

And there is a ton for you to learn about both chips and poker. Seems like that’s your thing being into books.

If you’re like me you go ALL IN when you get into hobbies, you’ll have a blast around here. Can’t wait to see what chips you end up getting!

Welcome to the forum! What school are you going to? I live in Farmington and host a monthly game. You're welcome to join if I have a seat available from time to time. Once you get messaging access, shoot me a DM.

Welcome!

I started in college with dice chips. For college, I’d recommend probably $100-$250ish bucks max. That way if some get lost/covered in beer and/or no one is interested after a couple of games you’re not stuck. Plenty of solid options! If you could give an idea of rough budget you’d be comfortable spending, folk here can guide you to some wallet friendly options. More $ will get better quality to a point, but a lot is subjective, so a few samples of chips you like before buying 400-600 is recommended.

The cost for some Paulsons you’ll see here will seem insane, but you don’t need those to have a fun low stakes game going.

GL!

Hey everyone, thanks for your responses! I haven't been able to get back because of schoolwork piling up (phew).

@Kam , as far as budget goes, I agree on not spending too much, so I'm aiming to get something within the $100-300 range. I've seen people talk about group buys to get custom chips from China, so it looks like it might be a good option to check out. I've also been eyeing the Flamingo bird chips and I'd love to own a set, but it seems like that design hasn't been requested in a while, so I might need to shell out a bit more money. Recently I ordered a Monte Carlo sample set from The Poker Store, but I realized that they were too heavy to handle and that the design wasn't my thing (although the chips were perfect!).

As far as denominations go, I'm kind of torn between getting a cash set or a getting a tournament set. I think my buddies and I agree that it would be fun to use high denominations to feel like high rollers. But I also want it to feel like it's real money and not just "game points" if that makes sense. I'm also pretty new to blind structures, so it's been a bit of a headache figuring stuff out. So far I've been looking into T25 and T100 structures, as well as .25/.50 and 1/2 cash games.

Also, @emunster18 I'm at BYU, so Farmington is a bit ways north, but I'll shoot you a dm once I get access!

Good luck down there in Provo!

Recently moved to Utah about 8 months ago. I just logged into this site for the first time in two years. Wasn’t aware Utah’s poker scene was this popular. It’s really nice to see.
