Hi there,

Tuning in from Amsterdam, the Netherlands - and desperately looking for a decent chip set to buy. As most of you (probably) did, I started off with a cheap supermarket set, followed by a minor upgrade. I've now reached the point where I'd like to invest a bit more and get my myself a decent set but I got lost in the vast wilderness of available sets. Just can't decide between china clays, ceramics or actually dig deep for a set of 2nd hand Paulson's or used casino chips etc.

I've just ordered a few sample sets so hope that helps narrowing things down. From a shipping perspective, Europe isn't the best place to shop for chips as most nice sets either come from China or the US - both with heavy import taxes. Any tips you may have are more than welcome of course!!

In the mean time, I'm happily cruising the forums and reading up on all of your stories. Never imagined such a thing as a "Poker chip forum" existed, let alone seeing the community was this active and involved. Impressive to see even the vendors are heavily participating - just great!

Take care - play on!

Hey Ook

Welcome to the forums, you're in the right place! You took a great start by ordering samples, take your time enjoying them and seeing which ones actually feel "right" to you. There have been some great second hand deals on the Classified's area recently, so hopefully you can find that nice upgrade soon!

PS: Blij om een Noorderbelg te zien langskomen ;)

Welkom!

Have you considered Classic Poker Chips, either custom, semi-custom or one of their stock designs?

Anyway, take as much time as you can. Order samples of everything that could be an option.

Welcome! Great start by getting samples, if you think you want to take the step to Paulson I would get some in hand to feel out before committing! You may be able to find some members near by or in the surrounding areas that can ship out some loaners for you to try. Will you be working on a cash or tournament set?

Welcome Ook, enjoy the ride (and limit your CC / PP now you still have the chance)

No more backdoors for customs fees (and NL is pretty bad) except maybe APO box (i you know someone)

Thanks for the warm welcome folks; much appreciated! I don't even get this much TLC from my relatives ;)

Great to see there are so many EU chip fans out here as well; I realize we are a minority in this field so will backup where I can!

@FordPickup92 - I'm primarily looking to buy a set for cash games but it will also double for small tourneys (~10-15 people) so a few high denoms need to be present as well.

I started off looking for a 500 pc set for around $250 but that quickly went up to $350-400. I've now already grown accustomed to ~$1 per chip so I can see how quickly this goes; need to act fast before I get used to even higher prices :nailbite:

I found someone offering a 700 piece Paulson set (Nationals) for around €750; more chips than I bargained for but now in doubt on whether that's a deal I should not pass on. Sample sets are on their way already (incl Paulson's) so hope customs doesn't delay things too much so I can still sample in time.

@Thomacetti - Will PM you for the APO box option; might be interested!!

Cheers!

Don't wait on samples and buy those...that is a GREAT deal...(espec. if these are already in EU..if not...still smokin' deal)

Ps. what samples do you want/need ?

They're EU based indeed; I kind of thought that was a good deal already but still a lot of money!

I ordered a few samples (they're in transit); China clays - Milano, Majestic, Casino Royale (the latter because I saw someone offering a 2nd hand set for under €150). Also new Pharaoh's (big inlay) and a Paulson's Lady Luck sampleset, just to get an idea for the look/feel. Quite a bunch but don't mind having a few different ones, just to stare at ;)

To top things off, I'm looking a for sample of Sun-Fly but that shouldn't be too hard.

Welcome Ook , keep in mind that buying these chips is like putting money in the bank. You can usually sell them for what you paid

Thanks for the tip! Yes, I kind of see it that way as well; this will be one for the grandkids haha!

@ReallyGoodUsername (or anyone else for that matter) - if you're ever around, feel free to ping me so we can go for a face-masked drink and chat! Always enjoy seeing other poker/chip fans :)

PS: Yes, I definitely considered them but unfortunately they're in the 'shipping fees are just to high' range for me.. It's almost like paying 40% rake with the US based shops ;)
