Hi the wife and I were planning our summer trip. One of the things we were thinking about doing is first visiting my Wife's cousin who lives in Seattle. Part of the trip was maybe we would drive to Vancouver for a few days where she has another cousin. When I look at vacations the gambler in me always looks at what Casinos are near the places we are going and see if they have a poker room. This is regardless if I think if I can get away for a short Casino excursion or not. I saw this place Grand Villa Casino in Burnaby, BC which is right next to Vancouver. Have any of the members ever been there? How is it? It says it is the largest poker room in British Columbia. How are Gateway Casino Properties in general?

I personally haven't played there but my friend from the city plays there all the time. I have heard it is really nice. Casinos are heavily regulated in Canada so generally they are clean and run a tight ship.

Thanks Lemonzest

Grand Villa is kind of close to Vancouver, it's a nice place. There's also Parq casino which is actually downtown Vancouver. They have a poker room too but not as good as Villa's so I hear, I haven't played at either.

Grand Villa Casino is just down the way from where I live. Feel free to drop by and say hi. My brother-in-law used to play poker there some years ago - he liked it.
You'll need to have a car, it's not convenient to get to any other way.

BC Casinos are great if you want to launder money. :ROFLMAO:

Also 11 tables is the biggest poker room in BC? I remember way back River Rock had dozens of cash tables. :( Edgewater too...

I used to play there a bit when they had 1/2 and that was about five years ago since. I believe now it’s 1/3. I’ve been at the new restaurant next door, same building and the food is amazing. Place is usually always full so I suggest calling ahead to get on the wait list.

So I went to this place last weekend. It's odd...

They play 1/3 & 2/5 and they had 5 tables going on Saturday night at 11PM. The room itself is spacious, no problem walking between tables which is nice. However there is zero atmosphere. They have a few TV's on the wall, but the walls are bare and white. It felt like I was playing in an underground game that was trying to be legit. Service was slow, but steady (the waitress never disappears for too awfully long). They use uninspired Bud Jones chips.

Overall, the casino is pretty nice but the poker room is a bare bones place to play.

Sounds about right. And this is my complaint about gaming in Canada. It is mediocre service with no atmosphere. We need to take a lesson from LV and actually make things fun.

Last I heard, the poker room at Grand Villa used to the the employee's break room which they just put poker tables into, thus the dull atmosphere.

Oh, bravo. They couldn't even paint? Welcome to anti-glamour gaming.

One of my department's Xmas parties is going to be there (in one of the lounges/clubs). I hope the food is decent. It's at least surprisingly well-priced.

The poker room recently moved again.(where you played)

a brief history: the poker room originally was upstairs in a room that was nicknamed “the onion room” it was an awesome room and had maybe 15 or so tables. The “room” was actually open on nearly all sides, and was kind of oval shaped.
When the poker boom died, the room was taken over by slot machines. The poker room was moved out of that area to closer to the back wall and was cut down to 6 tables.
Roughly 2 years ago, the casino did more renovations and the staff break room was turned into a large vip room on one half and the other half was turned into the new poker room. It had a lot of rough edges, but things slowly got worked out, and they made a bit of an effort to make Grand Villa into the place to play poker, including expanding to 11 tables.
Now, about 3 months ago, they decided that they needed that space for more slots and vip areas, so the poker room was moved once again. It was taken outside of the gaming floor, down to the main floor, and put into a room that used to be for the Delta hotel. The space was actually larger, which was nice, as it allows people to move around a bit easier.
I haven’t actually had the opportunity to see it now, as I am living in France. They were planning on continuing to do renovations to the area though, to make it a better atmosphere. I know there was a big issue with ventilation at first.
Oh, and the reason I know most of this is because I actually worked there.
Mike
