Hello good people of PCF,

I have been thinking about a custom set design for quite some time now, and I feel like I came up with an idea that will satisfy my high demands. The goal was to create a "fictional" casino with a nod to either a movie or a real-life building, which ideally hasn't been done before and makes for an interesting story.

So here it goes - meet the Grand Budapest Hotel & Casino!

Obviously a nod to the beautiful Wes Anderson movie, I tried to emulate some of the key rooms / locations inside the hotel into the chip colors. Without already boring you at the beginning, meet the chips (Inlay only as placeholder for now)

The 0,05€ chip is inspired by the outside view of the Grand Budapest Hotel. Unfortunately I couldn't find a better pink colour, I guess those problems would go away if I would do a Ceramic Chip right? I chose the B-mold, because it nicely fits the Budapest.

The 0,25€ chip is inspired by the hilarious bathtub scene in the Grand Budapest Spa. Different blue shades dominate this room.

The 1€ chip is inspired by the great hall past renovation / modernization. Lots of white marble, red carpet and greyish accents. I was also contemplating making the second spot pink.

The 5€ chip is inspired by the original entry hall / reception. Very yellow and brown dominant.

The 25€ I really wanted to caption the famous elevator shots, I feel the colors in the movie play just beautifully with each other. Unfortunately the right shade of red is not available on CPC.

So in my mind an investor has bought the Grand Budapest and decided to turn it into a Resort & Casino kinda situation. So with the layout and edge spots of the Chips I wanted to go for a more modern look while honoring the Hotel's rich past.

I still need help in designing the labels, I have some ideas but am lacking the skills to realize them. Are there people on here that can help? I am happy to pay you for your services :)

But first of all, I am excited to hear what you think. Open to feedback and design changes!

Oh man, really like the theme Luca. A few sets have been built recently where each chip references a specific aspect within an overall theme, love there you're going here. The blue chip is great! As long as the white and yellow chips are different enough it should be fine. If it was a very pale yellow you may get dirty stack issues.

I've done a fair few label projects for folks, including my own sets. If I can help with the label artwork shoot me a PM and we can bat some ideas around.
See if we can come up with anything :cool

Love this idea and the chips! How about dg tiger for the €25 base color?

Love this!

I am really happy about all the positive feedback, thank you so much for this! @mattross1313 and I are currently in the works for the logo. I have also acquired a wooden chest from the 1920s which I want to turn into the case for my chips. The plan is to sand it, replace the lock, pad it with foam from the inside and engrave a picture of the hotel front into the top of the chest. It will fit around 5 racks of chips, which will also serve my wallet so I have no option to go overboard on the breakdowns haha.

I have also been tweaking the colours based on your feedback (@David Spragg was also kind enough to provide some feedback) and I am currently experimenting with some spot progressions.

Big plans, I will keep you guys posted!

Okay fellas we got some news!

As David unfortunately informed me I just slightly missed a run of the B-mold (which is only fitting for Grand Budapest), so it'll take some time until we will see finished chips. In the meantime, I will use the time to come up with even more design ideas and keep you posted on everything else that will make this set special.

In the last couple of days I was working together with an artist on fiverr who turned a crappy screenshot of the Grand Budapest into a monochromatic vector graphic, so I can use this to engrave in the lid of my chest. If there is anybody on here offering the same services, I will use the PCF inhouse services the next time. If not, I will happily provide you the handle of the fiverr artist.

So without further ado, here is the current version of the vector graphic (it is still in revision with some slight changes)

If anyone wants to use it for their own projects feel free to contact me. Now is the time, since it doesn't have any Grand Budapest branding on it just yet ;)
I'm also thinking of having a colorized version done to use on the dealer button.

Oh and since you all want to probably see some poker chips, here is a mockup with label v1.0, courtesy of @mattross1313 :

You know, I *think* there is a book of a lot of wes Anderson's sets that make have a better photo that you can scan in for the labels...just a thought! Love the idea!

The amount of detail in architectural facades can be staggering, especially on a large building, so you might have to simplify or use only a portion.

I did the same thing on my Casino Royale inlay, but I could only use a small portion of a single building wing (the Grandhotel Pupp in Czech Republic which was used for exterior shots).

this is a very cool idea. guess i need to put this movie in my queue?

Very much yes

done. i had to look him up and realized i have enjoyed multiple movies of his (rushmore, royal tennenbaums, life aquatic, bottle rocket). i guess i should really pay more attention to what i am watching.

Excited to see the end result! Id love to get my hands on a sample set when they are finished.
So if there will be a general interest I think I will plan for 10 sample sets, but let's see!

Totally agree! The vector graphic of the Grand Budapest is for a 20cm x 10cm laser engraving in wood. And just maybe for a 49mm dealer button. If I will decide for the hotel on the label, I would definitely have to reduce the level of detail.

And to everyone out here who stumbles along this thread and hasn't seen Grand Budapest Hotel, go and see it! I think every single one of us is a fan of aesthetic design, and this movie is simply beautiful. Also music enthusiasts will get their money's worth. It won Oscars for production design and original score (as well as costume and makeup, but who really cares bout those right? ;) ).

I think these would make good cut cards. I would like to see some Casino Royale as well.

I‘m definitely planning on getting some cut cards, but I have special plans for the design and it might take some time until I have the design ready ☺️

Hello my dear people,

we got news! There is a refined label for the CPC set an David informed me that I will have some more time to enter my design into the B-mold run. So look at what we got right now, I am always happy for your feedback :) The label is inspired by the characteristic entrance way of the GBH.

Grand_Budapest_V2.png

To save some money, I have decided to not have nickels in this set and save it for a special occasion and bigger games. For small games I will do another set with the cards molds chip from Tina. I am currently getting some complex image vectography done on fiverr so I don't want to spoil too much, but lets say the set revolves around the society of the crossed keys from the movie. Will keep you posted when the first design comes back :)

Cheers!

Hello people,

I will save you all the GBH nostalgia this time and focus on what we people around here love the most, POKER CHIPS!! Would love to hear your feedback on the chip colors and spot progression. Currently they all have the same label, plan is as follows:

Yellow: 25ct
Green: 1€
Purple: 5€
Blue: 20€

The green feels too harsh to me, love the blue chip, consider moving it in the line up to be a workhosre chip

I think the edge spot progression is quite nice! But I also agree that the green is pretty dark compared to the rest. I think it would work better as a 25 and the blue as a 1. Although the edge spots on the blue currently look really great.

Personally I might be tempted to do the .25 as a solid, but the current spots look very nice as well! Excited to see this set continue to evolve!

@Machine thanks for your feedback! The green one is exactly the one I‘m not sure about, I desperately tried to build a chip around a color I didn‘t use yet. Any suggestions for a color that would tie in nicely?

I would use the blue chip as a workhorse chip in an instant, if the edge spot pattern wouldn‘t be so damn expensive haha.

@MichaelBubly I was also contemplating a solid for the lowest denom, but I‘m thinking it would be a waste to buy custom chips and make them solids

I don't really like red; I think that chip is nice for red and it fits, but you need to make red base 25c or the 5, it would be odd if not, I like the inserts and try light green?
