Well my samples from BR Pro came in today.

Tiki
Dus de los Muertos
Tropic Oasis
Greek Triangle “clay” composite

All in all pretty happy with all of them. The ones I was really excited about were the Greek Triangles but man I did not like them at all. They felt like the stuff on the shelf at Walmart to me. Which I know to some is good but I was let down a little. The edge have “slag” from the press and they fell like just run of the mill plastic. Now the “slag” isn’t crazy but it can be felt when trying to shuffle or run your finger across it. I really wanted to like them. In fact I was just about to say “send it!” And order a full set. Man I’m glad I didn’t. Anyway now I’m just waiting on the China clays from Apache but the front runner thus far are the tiki or del los muertos. Quick question for y’all pros out there, if you order custom chips from BR Pro, do they have the same texture and feeling of the tikis or what not?

Looks like if the ceramics you got, they’re all using the same blanks, the smooth finish. BRPro also uses a textured blank on the Desert Sands and NJ Skulls. It’s grittier and grips harder, but the artwork isn’t QUITE as sharp.
Some folks like the textured better, I like the smooth...it’s closer to the Chipco casino chips.

^ exactly. Customs would be just like those smooth samples. I also like the Nevada Jack because I think the design can stand up to that texture; can't stand the hazy look the desert sands get with the texture

Ya the more I fidget with the tikis the more I like then. My only “hold up” is that I have a set of ceramics (Venerati) and for my cash game set I kinda wanted a classic chip. I’m not willing to pay for the real deal but I think a little variety would be good. Well here’s hoping the China clays are everything and more lol.

Recently went through a custom label project with the triangle and stick chips and ran into the similar issue you have in your pic with flashing on the edge. A few thoughts.

Some vendors are better than others on those chips. Would ask around on the forum. I went through thepokerstore and mine definitely had flashing.

if you’re deadset on the design, you can spend a few hours “sanding” then down with either the rough part of a Brillo pad, or with a microfiber cloth. Hobbyphillic has a video on this. I went Brillo pad and 600 chips took nearly a minute per chip, so it definitely was a chore, but I’m happy with how they came out.

I didn’t even think of that. I do really like the colors. They are vibrant and clean. I really want to compare them to the Royal samples that are in route ( and kid you not, got a update while typing this from USPS that they are delayed again). A lot of folks say the colors pop on those too.

Agree that the colors are amazing. Went with these for my tournament breakdown, but the remaining colors are great as well. The Texas Card Houses use these chips as their cash chips and they’re really pretty

If you zoom in, you can clearly see the difference between the sanded 100s (grey) vs the other barrels (unsanded). Night and day feel difference.

Congrats on your samples! The first step in your journey. :)

The "Greek triangle clay composite" chips sold by BRProPoker are a relabeled version of the Claysmith "Gear Wheel" mold chips, also sold with different labels as The Mint and Rock and Roll. They're metal-slugged injection-molded plastic. Which is fine, if you like them. For metal sluggers they're pretty good, except that these in particular have a lot of that slag you noticed, which is called "flash". Flash is a lot less obtrusive on most other plastic chips. A few people have sanded or buffed the edges of their Claysmith chips smooth and are happy with them. Myself, I wouldn't bother, but it all depends on how much you like the chips otherwise.

Flash...slag...I think slag better lol.

I’m on the fence about them. Like I said earlier, I really wanted to like them but I’m a little bummed about the fit and finish. Hopefully my CC samples come in soon. I think I want a set of “clay” being that I already have ceramic set but if the CC are a let down maybe a custom ceramic...with like a Goat (for navy chiefs)...

Claysmith's QC is abysmal. You can clean most of it up with some scotchbrite / your nails... but still. The edge shape and feel of them aren't great even when the flashing filed down.

Ok well I got my Apache samples in today.

Royals
Dunes
Bank
Milano

All in all I guess they aren’t bad. Maybe I’ve using ceramics too long lol. I’m not sold on any of them. They all feel like plastic. To be completely fair, I think my expectations going into this was crazy high lol. I don’t have the budget for Paulsons but I really want a cash game set so I think I’m going to get another ceramic set with the doms I want...something semi custom..? I really wanted a classic look so now on to find a ceramic that looks classic and clean.

Can you start with a small group of Paulsons, maybe some from the upcoming Jack Cincinnati sale? If it’s like the HSI sale, any of the lower denoms will likely be in the .50-.70 per chip range.
If you start with just a few hundred, you could build over time. If you decide to change direction later on, you’ll likely sell them for more than you paid.

Jake Cincinnati sale? I’m not tracking? Is that posted here somewhere? Ya I was ready to spend .65 on ceramics so if I can get Paulsons for about that...I just assumed they were way out of reach for my budget. When I see them in the classifieds it seems that folks wanted 1.50-ish a chip. I’m looking for a .25, 1.00, and a 5er for chips so maybe...

It’s starts with the sample sale this Sunday. You can look at the chips here:
https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/jack-cincinnati-sample-set-sale.69951/
Following the sample sale, there will be a sales thread a week or more later from the ChipRoom (a vendor here on PCF) where you can buy them in bulk.
There’s no .25 chips, so you’ll have to find an alternative.
Also with chiproom sales, the first hour has restrictions on the percentages, like you can’t buy 100% of your order of $100 chips, etc.
After the first hour, it’s wide open. Generally, $1, $5, and $25 don’t sell out very quickly, but this time the $1 are Paulson THC, so it’s hard to forecast.

What is the difference between secondary and primary? Just the color?
Colors and inlays. The secondary chips were made as a backup should the security of the primaries be compromised. Generally, the secondaries are all brand new, and primaries are a mix of new and used (and priced accordingly)

Edge spots, as well (technically part of color)!

If you end up buying used, be warned...they’re FILTHY. I mean, blobs of hairy gunk dirty. But, half the fun is cleaning them and bringing them back to glory ( to me, anyway. Others dread it.)

Will also add, have a game plan before going into TCR sales. Things go quickly when the sale goes live.
Agreed. And be signed in to PayPal before the sale starts.
Also, if you need to make multiple orders that day to get what you want, don’t worry if it charges you shipping each sale. Jim at ChipRoom will condense all orders and refund the necessary amount.

That’s the spirit!

Also worth noting that chips from TCR sales (and paulsons in general) have excellent resale value, often over 100%.

That being the case, if you’re in the financial position to support it, it’s not a bad idea to go a bit overboard on your initial purchase and then sell whatever you end up not needing.

I made the mistake of not buying 100s or 500s in the initial Horseshoe S Indiana sale, and paid dearly for the chips I ended up wanting in the aftermarket.
