This applies to tourneys or cash games at a casino or public poker room.
Probably nothing makes me rage more than this. Poker tables and poker rooms are tight places to begin with. They’re often so tight that one fat guy is an inconvenience and two fat guys is a problem. So why the hell do they let somebody’s girlfriend clog up the works by setting up a chair behind her man?
And what the hell is wrong with these people? If you’re going out with your girl, go do something with your girl. Don’t bring her to the poker table and make her watch. Do you bring her to your work and make her watch that?
Yes, I realize how sexist this is. But I’ve only seen a man sitting behind his wife once, and that’s because he already busted out. And that’s just as bad.
And even worse than the crowding is the possibility that this extra watcher person will get a glimpse of the cards of other players. It tilts the hell out of me and should never be allowed. Now these people sitting next to this idiot couple have to contort themselves even further, when peeking at their cards, to protect their hand from the spy?
I was playing in the last flight of a multi-day tournament at Mohegan Sun, a couple of years ago. Because it was the last flight the room was completely full. So full that they quickly ran out of side tables for people who wanted to eat. So full that they quickly ran out of extra chairs for people to use as side tables. There were people with bags of food sitting on the floor with no way to eat. All the while there’s a chick sitting behind her boyfriend, watching him play. Taking up an extra chair, taking up extra space, distracting people, turning my tilt to rage.
No sir, I don’t like it.

In some places it’s a cultural thing. In our area of the world it is.

To each his (or her) own in my eyes. Not gonna comment on how couples should choose to hang out cause that’s not my call, but I do understand that with the spacing issues, I would be uncomfortable with someone’s girlfriend essentially sitting behind both of us. Just one more thing I have to concern myself with while playing.

Curious, would you be more comfortable if she was sitting behind players across the table, where the sig other can see them?

Along the same lines...

I had never been more upset in my life than when I went to a Magic the Gathering pre release at a local store and saw a guy there with his 5yo daughter in tow. She had nothing to do, and clearly want interested in anything going on at the store. She literally sat in a corner at an empty table and just watched stuff on her tablet the entire time. I even saw her ask her dad if they could leave a couple hours in, and he said no.

Even if I wasn't already a parent at the time, this would have made me fume. But I don't get involved in other parents' bad parenting decisions unless the child is in physical danger. So, I just sat there angry.

No that’s even worse.
I’ve been the significant other in this situation - very often I’ll go to tournaments with a buddy. If he makes it to the final table and I don’t, I’ll want to watch. There’s plenty of room in the room at this point, so space isn’t an issue. But finding a position to watch the action, where you’re not making somebody nervous because you can see their hole cards is impossible.
Best to just walk by every so often to check the stacks, and keep walking.

This would bother me more than anything!

Ehh, I don't think I've ever seen a good player with a s/o sitting behind them at a table, happy to have an easy marker on a fish in a tournament, especially if there's a chance to get a read off of their s/o if they're trying to show them hands.

Indeed, it's more probable that the s/o reveals that player's hand through looks and unfounded smiles:D

As a fat bastard, I'm offended by this sentiment. :cautious:

Also wondering where are all these poker games with only judgy skinny people?

Playing in a tourney and a guy raises preflop. While the table is waiting on a guy, the raisers girlfriend walked up and asked how it was going. He flashed his cards up, and she smiled big and punched him a little in the shoulder. Everyone folded.

Being completely serious here - I’m not blaming anybody because of their size. If anything, we should be blaming the poker rooms for making the spaces too tight.
Sorry if my bluntness was offensive.

I prefer rooms where the rail is enforced - but they have been few and far between. Most of the time, if I'm going to watch Mrs Zombie play (yeah, because you know I'm out already) I'll do it from another table or outside the room's rail. The rail gives me the best angle to see the table, and I'm far enough back that a player would really have to suck at peeking at their cards for me to see anything. Yet it allows me to "play along" in my head, getting reads, and passing on those reads during break.

Not that the reads of a player that routinely busts early are worth that much.

Guess I really need to use the ;) emoji more when I'm slightly joshing folks.

I mean, I always feel a little bad for the person that's sitting behind in this situation, but I don't worry about impact to the game, and if anything, I understand the other comments about an additional source of tells.

Thankfully, my wife has enough interest where she will actually sit in games with me when we go out. (Or when I host.)

Thousands of hours logged in casinos and I've never once seen a wife/girlfriend sitting behind a player who wasn't doing his best to give away his money. Yes, he might play tighter than he would have if she weren't there, but he will still rate to lose overall.

And as with all annoyances in live poker, I'm happy to let the fish have their way so long as they're in the game.

It is annoying. But as many have said it's probably to everyone else's advantage.

I just don't get it, who would want to sit there, and who would want someone to sit there? When someone asks me if I want to go to the casino, I usually say sure, but I'm not going to hang out with you, I'm going to the poker room, so unless you're planning on poker I probably won't hang out much.

At work there is a coworkers girlfriend that will hang out with him every Friday night and Saturday. He drives a grain truck for us, from field to grain bin 15+ times a day, same rough route same windy dirty unload, 14 hours a day. None of us understand why she would do that, he doesn't, just the way some folks are I guess.

Clearly we’re not going to tell you! ;) (j/k they wouldn’t let me in either)

Seriously, I do hate it when places (bars, restaurants, casinos, etc etc) plan space based on every single person being skinny.

I mean, I’ve visited places in the world where that’s often true, but in the US it is just dumb because it guarantees some customers are going to be uncomfortable & unhappy.

The entire premise of this thread is operating under the assumption that the men in question are not whipped.

I, for one, am whipped. Wife keeps the grapes in her purse. So here's the scenario surrounding this weird dynamic at the table through the lens of a whipped husband:
  • Dude gets permission to go to casino to play poker (huge win)
  • Dude realizes that this is contingent on wife joining him (huge letdown)
  • Dude gives wife a hundo to play slots. She sets that shit on fire before he even gets a seat
  • Dude gives wife another hundo and she blows it before the first full orbit.
  • Wife is now standing behind dude, but she's trying to be the "cool wife" and let him play cards. After about 30 minutes, she's stalking him again
  • Dude begrudgingly offers wife the opportunity to sit behind him. She accepts.
  • Wife not happy with just sitting there, so she wants to sweat the hands.
  • Dude reluctantly agrees, and now his poker mystique, much like his dick, is just for show
  • Wife gives off every tell imaginable and dude gets stacked within the hour.
  • Wife shrugs off the loss and asks dude if he had fun during his 83 minute session.
  • Wife then suggests dinner, typically a steakhouse, because why the fuck not? They are only $500 in the hole after barely an hour
So to all you chippers out there with genuinely cool wives who let you do your thing and only take part if there is true enjoyment or relationship-building involved....

Go fuck yourselves

My condolences.

Option B:

-Man wants to play poker.
-Wife reluctantly agrees, but was hoping to do something together.
-Wife has no interest in anything casino-related, but...
-Casino has a decent hotel, and also a spa. So...
-Husband books hotel room for the evening, and schedules his wife for a massage.
-Husband plays poker for 3 or 4 hours, heads back to the hotel room, where...
-Wife is in bed, relaxed and not distracted by house, kids, dogs, etc., so...
-Happy fun time ensues.
-Husband orders room service, including a couple glasses of wine for wife.
-Wife falls asleep early, so husband returns to the poker room.

Problems solved! :D
