Sorry if this has already been a thread (I did search first)

I got samples from the good people at gear labels and wish to relabel some CPC chips.

Removing the old label was easy with a craft knife but I found seating a replacement label awkward and I'm reluctant to print a large amount.

Are there any tips or tutorials here but might help? I've seen a few Paulson sets that look well done, what's the secret for straight/non bobbled work.

Cheers

Use an exacto-knife. Place the label on the flat edge of the blade, and hover it over the recess until it is centered. Attach one edge. Confirm that it is centered. Remove knife and press firmly down to finish installing the label.

you should do a video!

I do them by hand, no knife. Typically Gear will produce labels which are only very slightly smaller than the recess.

Being right-handed, I align the upper left of the label circle (around 10 on a clock face as it were) almost against the recess edge, with just a hair of room to spare.

Then smooth it down evenly and firmly with the flat of my finger from 10 to 4. 97% of the time, it will fall neatly into place.

There’s a bigger difficulty, in my experience, than getting the label to sit in the recess without riding up over the lip. Namely, air bubbles. Care needs to be taken in smoothing it down.

The labels make a high quality seal which makes it very difficult to ease air bubbles out. It is also tough to peel back a label to reset or resmooth it without ruining the label.

Helpfully, Gear typically supplies extras for any job. You can expect to have to redo a small percentage of the labels you put down, and discard the mistakes. If you take care and learn as you go, you’re pretty sure to still have a small surplus at the end.

Thanks all! Weirdly only thd Oak Tree Casion sample actually fits, the other 7/8" samples are a fraction bigger.

@Gear ?????

What is weird about that? The Oak Tree sample actually fits what?

As it says in the accompanying letter, the sample kit is intended to demonstrate the finishes and textures (laminates) as well as thickness. They are cut to 0.875" which is generally small enough to fit on most chips (e.g. compared to Paulson RHC, most china clays, etc.)

The diameter of the samples is totally irrelevant, because (as it also says in the accompanying letter) we can cut the label to whatever diameter is needed. Tell us what chips you want to label, and we will adjust the size to suit.
