Why are these versions of Paulson Top Hat/Cane so cheap compared to others? I’m very new to chipping and it seems you can get these readily well under $0.50 a chip.

Thanks in advance!

I’m just guessing here and others that are more knowledgeable can correct me, but I think...

1) they seem to be available (higher supply)
2) the inlay doesn’t necessarily appeal to all (lower demand)
3) they usually seem to be fairly worn

These wouldn’t compare to mint THC leaded chips available at the higher prices

I would add less-desirable oversize inlays to ^ that list. In addition, all of the chips from that casino aren't exactly the same type, mold, or even manufacturer - there are Paulson chips in two molds and two inlay sizes, plus BCC chips.... hard to put together an attractive cohesive set for some OCD-afflicted folks.

You know I agree, but it's worth mentioning that some people pay a premium for oversized inlays for other sets, like PCNY and others.
OP, these chips are in lower demand for a few factors, as the others said, but there's nothing inherently wrong about them - they're casino paulsons, and if you can make use of the available denominations, maybe the best deal in town.

Watching this discussion with interest - currently both Paulson and BCC garden cities are available - I have paulson Cincys and love them - don’t know a thing about BCC chips but they appear to be in better condition than the Paulson’s - can anyone offer an opinion on BCC vs Paulson’s? Much appreciated!

I’ve spent about the last two weeks buying to get a set of these in Paulson’s. Once I get all the chips delivered and clean I’ll check back in. I’m a big fan of the California colors and denominations. Sure they aren’t minty, but I’m excited to get them into my regular game.

FYP

I have samples of these from their original chip room release, and they haven’t seen play since. The only way to describe these is as “communion wafers”. I had a friend who had been almost talked into buying some of these a few years back... luckily he stopped by my place to see these in person first. Granted, these are cheap, but ya gotta understand what you’re getting.

I was going to say the same thing, when I saw this post this morning. But then I took a look at the pics of the chips presently available from the chip exchange. This is what's available for paulsons. The denominations aren't great unless you're planning a limit game. But the conditions aren't TOO bad. Definitely casino worn. But not quite wafer.

Put those next to mint or near mint chips, and you’d be shocked. I bet those $5’s fit 22 chips to a barrel. If you want Paulsons, and don’t care if these are very worn, then it’s a great price. I think anyone who has played with newer chips will be tilted by the condition of the Garden City Chips.

IF you don't mind looking (and waiting) for the BCCs to become available, they are in better condition than the Paulsons.

I measured a random stack of 50c, $1, $5, and $10 against a brand new barrel of ASM Horsehead chips, and they came within about half a chip...

L to R: BCC GC $1, ASM HHR, BCC GC $10, BCC GC $5, BCC GC 50c

can anyone offer an opinion on BCC vs Paulson’s?

Such a difficult question, because there are differences within each manufacturer. I don't own any of the garden city chips, so I can't address those specifically.
But since nobody's answered you, I'll give it a shot.
BCC clay is great. And I don't think anybody will say otherwise.
The three most common compression clay brands you'll see around here are Paulson, BCC, and ASM/CPC. People here will rank those three brands in different orders, but I think most people will agree that they're all great. Personally, I prefer the older (generally pre-2000) leaded paulson chips over everything. And for me, BCC is second, and ASM/CPC is third. I THINK I prefer BCC clay over the newer, unleaded Paulson clay, but I haven't put very much thought into it. And this is all really picking nits. The chips will vary hugely based on mold and inlay size, but generally speaking, all three brands are great. So I wouldn't shy away from the BCC chips vs the Paulsons. The Paulsons have more cache because of the brand name - they're the gold standard. If you can get BCCs cheaper because of that, you're probably doing good.

You're probably right. At second glance, they seem to be in similar condition to my gulfport $5's. And I recently planned on using the gulfport chips (because my small set suited the small game) but at the last minute, I was thinking about the minty $5's in my other set, and switched to those instead.
So yeah, condition matters.

thanks for the response - brings up another question - do the paulson or BCC Garden Cities currently for sale have lead in them?

do the paulson or BCC Garden Cities currently for sale have lead in them?
Depends. The place opened in 1946 (long before Paul-Son), and went through many different types of chips before closing in 2012. All of the early Paulson THC chips have lead (pre-1998), but the RHC chips likely do not. Also no lead in these (or any) BCC chips.

But it's really a non-issue, health-wise. And desired, playability-wise.

Here’s the Garden City’s I’ve collected (Minus 200x $2’s, about 160x $20’s and a few extra $1’s)

Yes, they are worn. About 21 in a rack for the 5’s and 20’s. The 20’s are the most worn of the set by a long shot, they are wafers.
Like I said earlier, I love the colors and considering the price...I’m very happy with the set.

i just started collecting these Garden City BCC myself and i really like them so far, although they do seem to be almost more slippery than the average chips i think because of how thin they are, how large the inlay is and how light they are.

i really want to get some $.50 or $1 chips in the same style but im not finding any online so far.

I’ve picked up 1,200 of the $2 BCC - better condition than I expected them to be and easy to clean.

Are all the Paulsons the same thickness? I’m wondering if I mixed in some casino chips with my classics if it would be ok, I’m looking for a 0.50 chip.

how can I identify if my claim stakes have lead in?

They definitely have lead in them, you should probably protect your health and sell them to me cheaply. (There are a couple threads discussing lead content, they pose no risk, just don’t eat your chips.)

Regarding the garden City chips, I have a limit set of 1600 Paulson $2s, they’re in ok shape, definitely worn, but I can’t jam 21 into a Paulson rack and they were impossible to beat for the price. The $20s and $100s are more worn, can just wedge 21 chips into a rack for the $20s, but still hardly the most worn I’ve seen compared to some lucky derby’s, empress, etc. Giant inlays are slippery for sure, but fine for a limit game and I used to live a mile from the old casino so they’re a little special to me.

I'm sure that all Paulsons are manufactured to the same thickness, but wear and tear over years and years and decades can cause them to wear down and lose height and mass. A barrel of Excellent to Mint chips will fit very snugly in a standard Paulson rack. However, heavily used chips can wear a barrel down so you can fit 21 in a barrel, and maybe even 21 with still a lot of wiggle room. To date, I have yet to be able to fit 22 in a Paulson rack, even with the worst of the worst bicycle tires.

I would say most Paulson. The Horseshoe Cleveland $500 secondary are definitely thicker than other chips (even comparing mint to mint chips).
