Playing 4/8 half-kill O8 at Tampa Hard Rock

Previous pot was scooped so this hand is 6/12

I limp in with :ac::tc::6d::3d:

And the flop is fucking YAHTZEE!

:2d::4d::5d:

The reason being is that this month on Tuesdays there is a $500 high hand every 20 minutes.

In the hold em games they can hit it through the river, but in O8 we have to flop it

To my surprise the player to my right bets the flop!

He has the Ace high flush and no low, and I have nut-nut!

I just call and two more players come along

The turn is the :9d: and he leads and we all call

River is the :2s: and he still bets, I raise, unfortunately the other two players fold

He reraises, I reraise and he gets worried I might've rivered quads (he boated with :ad::jd::9h::9s:) and slows down and just calls

I call the floor over and they verify my high hand, which holds for the remaining 12 minutes to win $500

Wound up tipping the dealer $50 since others said 10% is what should be tipped. Any thoughts on that amount? Too high, just right?

Nice!
Ten percent seems good to me. But when I asked about how much to tip dealers when you cash a tournament, the consensus seemed to be 5 percent or less, which seemed really low to me. I wonder if there’s a different standard here, or what.

10% is ok... but really? I don’t thonk I’ve ever seen anyone tip 10% for anything in poker.. had there been no high hand, and you just won the pot (guessing around $200) would you have tipped $20?

Tourney wins maybe 5% imho. Or less. Depends. If you win the WSOP, are you tipping 10%? How about a 100k prize, you really tipping 10k to the dealer? A buddy won a bad beat jackpot (25k) and tossed the dealer a purple 500 chip, and the dealer was very pleased.

Yeah, think I got peer pressured into it. So what would you tip?

I’ve won lots of high hand bonuses (and seen lots of bonuses won by others), and I’ve always tossed the dealer a couple red chips if larger (maybe $5 tip for a $100 bonus), so 5% seems legit. In your situation I think a $25 chip would have been more than generous.

I love how everyone at the table is trying to advise you what to do with your money, when at every other junction they’re trying to separate you from it...

Edit: I consider myself very generous, as I donate a lot to charity in my personal life. But I’m different at a casino poker table. My primary goal is to have fun (as I love the game) but I’m there to crush souls and make money. Tipping crazy amounts seems to cut into my hourly. I still believe I tip dealers the “normal amount” compared t others. But I have seen guys go crazy with their tips, but usually alcohol is involved. :) Tipping the host at home gamEs is also different. I always do that, as I appreciate their costs and effort, and like getting invited back.

I guess when I think about it, I’m with @Trihonda and $25 would have been good there.
I hit a $150 high hand bonus in a tournament last week and they pay cash, and honesty that cash went straight into my pocket. It would have felt awkward handing the dealer cash in the middle of a tournament. I ended up cashing for 761 (so my total profit on the tournament with the bonus was 861) and I tipped 61. I’m pretty sure they pool their tips, so all’s well that ends well, I guess.
But what should I have done with that high hand cash, in the middle of the tournament, when the dealers had already changed by the time I got paid?

People are always more generous with your money! 5% would have been plenty. I hit a $500 high hand bonus and tipped $20 and the dealer was more than happy with it.

Just to confirm do you guys in America tip this in every hand you win?

Or is it just $1 or so for normal hands.

I’m only tipping a high hand if it’s the same dealer, and probably only $5-$10. With that said, I can’t recall tipping after winning a high hand before. So good for you.

Yeah there’s no way I’d tip more than $10.

The dealers are not actually allowed to accept tips here.

Typically at a $1/$2 table, the winner will tip $1 for a decent pot and maybe $2 or more for a big pot.

Keep in mind that swaths of jobs pay starvation wages at best in the United States of America and the customers are expected to make up the difference in tips - or not. This makes tipping questions critically important to service workers. e.g. the waiter who works our game at the bar in town is paid just over $2 / hr. On a slow night we will be his/her only substantial customer and our tips or lack there of likely seriously affect what she/he can afford to eat that week.

Most of the people you interact with on a service / customer basis expect a tip or at least have high hopes. Most of them need it to escape poverty for at least that day.

I hope the staff in a casino are paid more than $2 hr. I don't think they fall into the category of workers who can be paid $2 hr. Even so, tipping seems to be appropriate (and likely self preserving too, I'd not like to have the dealers looking for a way to punish me or help the villains.) That being said, $50 is more than I'd pay. Normally I tip a buck for a hand, occasional a few dollars more for special situations. If I paid a "dealers addon" or something similar as part of the entry I might not tip much extra at all in a tournament. I'll always tip for special service, whether I win a pot or not.

Ok that’s fair enough since your rake is low.

I thought for a second that you have to tip 10% on every win. That would make it tough to be profitable.

Dealers here get about $27 aud an hour. No tips though.

I guess it works out better for the US dealers? Might be close.

I am friend with some of the better dealers at our local casino. One of them told me he makes about $50k/year with tips. They are paid pretty much minimum wage as base salary.

When the casino first opened all tips were pooled, and the casino couldn’t keep the good dealers. After a year of everyone one complaining it was switched to each dealer getting to keep their own tips. It weeded out the crappy dealers pretty fast and bright good ones in.

I typically tip $1 if the pot is over $20. If it is a really big pot I’ll give a few more dollars up to $5.

If I'm stuck in a game, I'm not tipping. Once I'm ahead, $1 for a decent pot ($20 - $40) and $2 or $3 if the pot is really good is what I do tip.

As for tipping $50 from your high hand bonus, that's beyond the stars what I would pay. If this bonus can happen every 20 minutes (unlikely but still) the dealers are making money hand over fist if everyone tips them 10%. I'd toss them $25 at most.

$50 way too high IMO. I would be tipping $20 or $25 max.

Totally agree. $25 would be more than enough as far as I'm concerned.

Look at it this way... say you bink the bad beat and score 40% of a $250,000 jackpot. That's a $100,000 payout to you... are you paying the dealer 10 grand on that score? Hell no.

If it were me - I'd probably tip $1k to $2k on a $100k payout.

I usually like to take care of my dealers. Never had the opportunity to tip on a high hand jackpot/bonus but I would think it would be similar to a tournament win, 5% is good, 10% is generous, your dealer thanks you! (y)

Subject change. You flop this hand in Pot Limit with 3 other players. How do you proceed? 1/4 pot, 1/2 pot, pot, min bet? It's always a dilemma with nut nut. I like to bet 1/4 pot on the flop and if get lots of interest push hard on the turn and the river.

Hard to do that in a limit game.

It's your local casino. Nothing wrong with cultivating a rep with all the dealers that you are a generous dealer. 10% was fine.

If there has been a dealer change before you get paid, give it to the floor to pass on to the dealer.

The dealers change every 30 minutes, got his name and the table he was moving to and caught up with him there after I got paid to pay him (originally tipped $10 and then when my hand held gave him another $40)

He thanked me there plus later came by the table to shake my hand and thank me again

So I guess we both made each others nights lol
