I just ordered 600 Yin Yang poker chips, and when they arrived, I noticed the following flaws:

The line around the edge juts out slightly, giving the feel of a sharp edge, and makes flipping and stacking chips nearly impossible. I can scrape the edge off with my finger nail or a knife or razor, but the lighter colour ends up showing, making it look like a scratch, and plus, that's 600 poker chips. I'm waiting on response from the place I received them, but I paid $140 total for the set plus a case, and I'm pretty annoyed. Wondering if anyone has ever run into this before. These are 14g clay composite.

The chips I had that were similar to those did not have that defect.

Must be the flash molding from when they made the chips. I wonder if you took a barrel (20 chips) and used some 2000 grit sandpaper and lightly went over it if it would knock it down enough to not be noticeable without damaging the color. Otherwise maybe as the chips are used those spots will wear and become smooth

Must be the cheap China made plastic crap inside.... ;) sorry, return them and buy real chips from Jim at thechiproom.com

Have you heard back from them whether or not they are willing to return them?

It might just be how all that brand of chip would be so even if you got more they might be like that too.

They offer returns but with a 20% re-stocking fee, which is pretty annoying, and I have one more day to decide as all returns have to be sent within 7 bus. days of delivery. Think I'm going to stay the course. Haven't had a game with them yet, but have been filing back the edges while watching TV at night and they're looking fine.

$140's about the max I'm willing to pay on chips at this point, but if I ever decide to re-invest, I'll definitely try samples first. (I like the heavier weight, but people online seem to swear by the lighter 10 g paulson type. I like the Milano claysmith chips, especially since they have 25¢ and 50¢ denom, but won't cost me an arm and a leg).

Thanks for the input.

Post up some pictures of the chips in action once you get them in a game :)

Since you are in Canada...

If you like the Milano's, look at the Crazy Horse chips at Straight Poker Supplies in Toronto. Same chips with a different label. They are more expensive at first glance than Milano's in the US, but once you factor in shipping costs from the US (painful, especially if you don't use USPS), it's not that much different.

10g chips aren't the lightest chips, either...many of the custom chips from BCC (bought by GPI, who make Paulson) and ASM (soon to be Classic Poker Chips) are in the 8.5g - 9g range. But at $1+ / chip, they aren't cheap, either. As an avid chip shuffler, I find that chips in the 9.5g - 10g range are the sweet spot.

And yeah, action shots and splashed pot pictures of the chips are always welcome!

Hmmm...a friend of mine has those (probably from the same place...MRC?), but I don't recall seeing that on them or having any issues stacking or shuffling chips, other than the weight bugged me after a while...that's just me, though. I do see similar marks on those chips on the store's website under Bulk Chips. Look at the pictures there for the $0.50, $5, an $25 chips in particular. Might just be a "feature".

1) prolly a good idea to keep them at this point - instead of returning them - since you've "filed" the edges, no?
2) "official casino weight" is ~10g (assuming the casino uses paulsons...or ceramics). anything higher than that = metal slugged garbage. heavier =/= better
3) 25¢ and 50¢ chips in the same set is unnecessary and a waste of chips. stick with quarters, dollars, and fives.
4) as with many things in life you get what you pay for. 23¢/chip is far from a bargain on those chips. that's easily 5x what i would pay (and honestly 23¢/chip more than i would pay)
5) i'm not 100% sold that the issue in the pics is a "defect." wrong colors, wrong denoms, chiped/cracked/obviously damaged chips...you know, to the point where they can't/won't even stack....those are defects. a little material poking through on the edge? c'mon man....like i said...i'm not sold.
6) chalk it up to a chip-life lesson learned. next time (trust us...there will be a next time) do your research, ask questions before buying, and get samples.

Hate to revive such an old thread,

Didn't want to clutter the forum with more of an old topic...

I have owned these for 2 months. I had ordered Monte Carlo Poker Room chips and was told there was a 2 month backorder. So I settled for these Yin Yang chips and was not happy with what I received. I regret not allocating more money for better chips. I rushed into it because I needed them.

I paid $200 for 1100 chips. They came with racks and a carrier. I'm hoping to sell on Craigslist and save up extra dough and buy those Crazy Horse chips at Straight Poker supplies.

I usually make sure when I buy but I would have been unhappy with the Monte Carlo chips too. A friend of mine has them and I think they are way too heavy.

Wish I'd checked the forum for the information before purchasing.

How are the chips coming along for you now?

I got very lucky to sell them almost at face value. Got the crazy horses and liked them enough, ended up relabelling them. My advice, I bought the Laurel Crowns from MRC Poker in Vancouver. Ceramic chips, bright colours. Denoms are a little small but the look and feel are fantastic for what you’re getting, decent chips on a budget. Highly recommended.

Excellent information friend!

Much appreciated. Will look into your reconnaissance. I purchased my set from them to begin with. Just didn't know enough about chips.

If you're not sure, but samples. You'll hear that advice endlessly and I wish I had known earlier on, lol. Some chips may look amazing on screen but once you get them they may look duller or feel different than u expected. Samples are a cheap way to gain intel ;)

Yes get samples coz everyone will have a different opinion of the same chip. Case in point, I would not recommend Laurel & Crown at all. I ordered samples and a friend of mine has a large tourney set of them. They look nice but are super slick. I lost count how many times chipstacks toppled over from the slightest movements at the table. Bottom line is samples allow you to make the right call for you... so get samples!

Yes. I have noticed now the sample packs. I will most definitely get some. It can add up if I get too crazy. I will do long hard research and much YouTube video recon and narrow it down to a top 5 and then sample those....and then hopefully make a decision.

Well,

Craigslist came through for me. I was able to sell all my Yin Yang chips for $0.16/chip. I lost only $20 over the whole thing in the end. (Taxes be damned!!)

Now that I have had a chance to check out CPC website along with Apache site and a few others, it is clear to see I can't actually afford the Paulson stuff. Wish I could...

I'm hoping to get a hold of that sample box of chips from the user Forty4.

From the videos by user hobbyphilic to all the information provided here, I have narrowed it to 3 main chips.

1. Nile Club (ceramic)
2. Milano or Crazy Horse (relabeled milanos)
3. Dunes or Pharoahs

These seem to be the best of what I could afford. This is really a hard decision to make. It was easy to buy chips when I didn't care about how they look and feel.

I would recommend that you add another ceramic option to compare as not all ceramics are the same.

Well,

My budget - $500-600 USD.

There is no Paulson's or CPC chip in this price range. My search reveals Paulson's are even more expensive than CPC if I can even find em. Apache is great but I don't have the funds required.

I really love the "Rounders" CPC chip but at $865USD for 500 chips, I'm over budget and still wouldn't even have the chips I need. I would have to have a budget of $1730USD. That dream is crushed.

I'm super interested to learn more about the Royal Cardroom chip. I dont know anything about them.

What do you guys say about the "Dunes" chip being sold on Apache's site for $0.42/chip?This is on budget and they seem available in the exact desired quantities I want. They are described as being as close to a Paulson without being one.

You need to be patient and check the classifieds often:

Not Paulsons but good for the price:

A little outside your range but an even better price than the above (just sell off what you don't need):

Almost what I need....

Gives about half the chips I need with an over budget finish by the time they reach Canada. Excellent reference though....I should mention I need about 1000 chips...and an ability to pick denominations etc will make my purchase efficient.

I've accepted I can't buy Paulson's in this manner or with my rock hard budget.

CPC "Rounders" is what I'm dreaming of...

I'm thinking I may have to buy differing sets of chips for cash and tourney.

You should list your breakdown and detail how your game plays... maybe you don't need 1000 chips. Folks here can help with an efficient breakdown.

I currently may not actually need 1000 chips. You are likely correct.

I am currently awaiting a 2nd new poker table being built by Chanman. I already own one that I host on now.

I don't know what the future will hold so I need to be sure I get the RIGHT set and the RIGHT amount so I'm not trying to add on later.

I gotta get some sleep now...

Gonna dream of chips. Thanks for all the help. You are so helpful. I will heed your advice on patience.

So I run a few types of games...

Tourneys I run range from 7500-15000 starting chips with 25/50 as a starting blind and a usual 2 rebuy limit for 2 levels of blinds.

For this purpose :

175 x 25
175 x 100
125 x 500
125 x 1000
125 x 5000
25 x 10000 (not necessary but want to order 1 roll)

This is around 1.1M in chip value. I can run what I call a Super Deepstack with up to 20 people and 2 rebuys deep with all players seated. I don't really need the 10k chip but I want 1 roll anyways.

Additionally, I like to have a cash game. The stakes have ranged from .25/.25, .25/.50, and some $1/$2 but only once. However, I'm a new host and hope to grow my game. Especially with some kick ass chips and a brand new Chanman table being built...I'm thinking I can get a bigger $1/2 game.

For this purpose :

100 x $.25
150 x $1
150 x $5
50 x $10

This is around $1425 in cash chip value. I have never had a huge cash game. Maybe $600 over a good night. Also, with this setup, if it were all 1 matched set, the $25 chip could be used for a cash game if my game got that wild.

These are my breakdowns. This is exactly what I sold. It's 1100 chips.
