Hey guys,

I got my first table for $20 from someone on letgo for a casual home game but the rail is messed up so I was hoping for everyone's advice on the best way to go about fixing it / making the table nicer. Not looking to spend a ton of money because I don't want the wife to kill me but I would like to make it as nice as possible. Any advice would be much appreciated

One sheet of wood (MDF or better), some foam and a few feet of whisper vinyl and you will not recognize it

Can you cover the rail with a fabric or vinyl? Then you can pad that spot under it

Or the old black duct tape trick

Hmmm...that looks like this product.

Maybe just replace it with a piece the proper length?

I think you are correct that looks like the exact same product so it may be the easiest fix. Does anyone have any tutorials to follow (hopefully with video as I have no clue what I'm doing with woodwork) to follow the advice of @Thomacetti ? It would look much nicer that way and like a brand new table. I could borrow any tools that I need

so i found an extra sheet of plywood in the garage so I decided I'm going to take a shot at doing this and build my own rail and see how it comes out. I will post some pictures after my attempt (unless it comes out like complete crap then I will lurk quietly into the shadows hah)

Are you sure it won't just stretch to make the two ends meet?

I was able make it close by stretching the material and putting a few staples in it to hold it shut and then covering the whole thing with black duct tape which held up well and looks moderately better. I'm just thinking that building an actual rail and covering the table in speed cloth might be a substantial upgrade for the money I would be putting into it. Do you guys think its worth it? The material on the table now makes it pretty difficult to slide cards down the length of the table

Replacing the "felt" will definitely give you the most bang for the buck. A new rail is definitely doable on this table, but it will cost you time an money to do it right. In my experience the rail build is the most time consuming and least fun part of a table build. (It is also one of the most rewarding parts when it's done)

Is it feasible to do the rail with a single piece of plywood? All of the plans ive been looking at seem to use 2 pieces from the original sheets to build to rail. I was thinking one piece cut then wrapped in foam then vinyl and secured to the existing table from below

You are really going to want that lip that the second sheet will give you for a nice finish - and I don't know how you would go about upholstering the whole thing without it. That being said, you could create that lip in multiple pieces cut from the center of your sheet of plywood. I'd make your rail overhang the table by 2" on all sides and build a 1-1/2" lip from the waste material in the center. It's going to take some precise measurements.

If you're really confident with your measurements go with a 1.5" overhang and a 1.25" lip. Be careful not to split the wood for the lip - use pilot holes for the screws and use glue. I'd go with a 6" width on the rail. Also, make sure that the overall width is not wider than the vinyl can accommodate.

Here is a cross section of a rail I made. It might help you with your dimensions. This rail is wide enough to accommodate a jumbo cup holder. You can go a little narrower if you’re not doing cup holders. Also, this is a raised rail design. Yours would t be, so you would remove the plywood that is sandwiched between the top piece and the clear/lip.

The speedcloth (and new foam underneath, most likely required) would totally transform the table. Figure about $57 for the cloth, $23 for the foam, and $10 for incidentals (spray adhesive and staples).

You can certainly build a single-layer rail -- however, it will leave the outside edge of the table underneath exposed (presumably felt-covered), and it would need to be physically secured to prevent movement (not held in place by gravity, as can be done with an overhang rail).

You can secure it one of three ways: with industrial-grade velcro, screws from the bottom (make sure they don't go in any further than the wood), or with t-bolts installed in the rail prior to adding foam and vinyl.

It's the simplest and most cost-effective way of adding a decent rail to an existing table, or a cheap upgrade. Typically, you'll want your rail width to be 4" to 6" wide. Cost would include the 4'x8'x 1/2" plywood sheet ($22, unless already in-hand), plus $48 for foam, and $24-$60 for vinyl, and $15 for incidentals (spray adhesive, staples, and hardware).

Total refurb cost around $200 ($90 surface, $110 rail).

Thanks guys you are great! So whats your opinion? Am i better off not dealing with the rail? I don't really feel like I'm missing anything with the rail I currently have on the table other then the look of it not being so great. If i was to refoam it and put a speed cloth on it what would you guys do for the trim around the sides?

You can do it in stages. Reception it first and use your existing rail to cover the edges. Then, if you feel up to it, take on the rail project.

This product looks like Perfect Padded Rail (link below), $3.95/ft. The size seems to be the same as a standard pool noodle, which can be purchased in black (foamnoodles.com). I checked because those rails remind me of pool noodles.

This is definitely the same product that is on the table now. It honestly is pretty nice my biggest complaint is the seam where the two ends come together. The piece that is on my table is too short but even if it was the correct length im unsure how you would close that seam nicely without it looking like crap. Do you guys have any idea? That would definitely be the easiest method to fix up the table would be new foam, new speed cloth and replace my rail with this product but I worry about the seam between the two sides looking like crap

Oh, I agree. I was thinking of an inexpensive temporary patch.

I would experiment with contact cement to see if you can butt joint the two ends.

That is a pretty good idea actually. If I have two clean ends I could probably contact cement them perfectly together and you wouldn't notice it much and I can test it on my old piece I have right now. I think I might skip the rail and just try the contact cement like you said and throw on the speed cloth for all under $100

I've actually never played on speed cloth before but i've heard great things. Do you guys think it will be worth the $100 for that kind of an upgrade to the table? Anywhere that you can buy the speed cloth with a betting line on it already because that would be an AMAZING upgrade with the group I play with :)

I had speed cloth but then upgraded to gaming suede. The speed cloth is very fast and makes it great for dealing from the ends. Where it fails is in comfort and in the ability to do a flop reveal. (That’s when you place all three flop cards on top of each other and spread them out with your thumb to reveal them). That last bit really bothered me.
