First real set advice - Paulson Horseshoe from Apache vs. Apache's Royal Set (1 Viewer)

I just did a blind smell test, administered by my 7-year-old, for the following:
  • Apache Royals
  • Paulson RHC (HSI mint)
  • Paulson RHC murdered with gear label
  • Paulson THC, leaded/used
  • BRP DDLM ceramics
I got them all correct. Aside from very strange looks from my daughter, what do I win?
This is some next level shit

This is some next level shit
  • The Apache Royals smell like... Well old melted crayon with a hint of sour.
  • My mint RHCs smell like every other mint RHC; mild laser ink smell.
  • The murdered RHCs smell like nail polish remover and adhesive from the gear labels
  • The leaded THCs smell kind of like a casino without the smoke.
  • And finally the BR pro ceramic smell like nothing.

Casino Paulsons for $1/2 cash games are the most plentiful, affordable, and obtainable Paulson chips in general.

You have a wide variety of casinos to choose from, no need to label or convert something to a frac.

Indeed, and for smaller, micro games, they could be used as representing dimes (1/1, 1/2, 1/3, 2/5).

When analyzing your China clay samples, consider an idea I picked up from a fellow chipper here and a little experimentation:

Using 600 grit sandpaper, stroke both sides of each chip three times across the sandpaper, then clean them. They will stack much better, almost like completely different chips.

For a visual reference. Used HSI Primary, Apache Royals, New HSI Secondary & Apache Bank with custom white Royal labels.View attachment 670052

Royals could need some oil.

OP is looking for a cash set. I would prefer Paulson in this case. But I dont know how bad the used $1s are.

One plus for the Royals is how nicely they shuffle.

I personaly woulnd use the Royals as Cash Set. Doesn't feel right.
Can you talk a little more about this? Does this have to with the actual size of the chip? I'm contemplating having Royals for my cash set and I'm curious about your statement.

Yup , but mixing for example 39mm Paulsons with some upper denom 43MM royals is IMO just a disaster.

How about mixing Majestics with Royals - would that work? Our group plays micro at .05 / .10 with a $20 buy in and I thought it could be fun if all the cent chips (nickles and quarters) were smaller and from the Majestics. Thoughts?

Its just me. Do what you like!

I was looking for a cash and a tourney set. It is very hard and or expensive to get a real casino tourney set (that looks nice) T25 or T100 based. But there are several options for fantasy sets. The Royals are a beautiful tribute to high stakes real casino chips.(Not the label design but in terms of colors) As an oversized chip, they stack, weight and shuffle extremely well. Edgespot and overall design is top notch.

But for cash games we have a great choice of obsolete casino sets that i dont want to miss.

That would mix nice , majestics and royals have the same mold.

So the leaded THCs smelll like poker chips. Got it.

I think you’ll be surprised how nice the Royals are. I love mine. And save some $ and buy yourself some other nice stuff.
