Hello! I am student who has been playing regular poker with friends throughout covid. We currently use cheap plastic chips, so I have been looking to purchasing a nicer set. I have been looking around this forum for the past few days since it is such a great resource for shopping for chips (although my budget is much lower than many of the sets found here!). I figured it was time to introduce myself and start making some posts so that I can purchase in classified.

Hi there and welcome! Plastic chips can be nice too. I still miss my plastic casino royal chips :)

Welcome aboard! Budget chips can still be great chips! There are plenty of options out there, be sure to get samples, and check out the site vendors in addition to the classifieds!

Welcome!

If you let us know your relative budget and what stakes y'all play, it will be easier for people to point you in the right direction. Of course, "get samples" is always the best advice.

Thanks for the welcome! I don't have anything against plastic chips, but I was interesting in upgrading from the dice chips we currently use. I got some samples of Monte Carlos and another heavy chip called Slowplay. I am also waiting for samples of china clay (Dunes from Apache) and ceramic (Dia de los Muertos) chips.

I was aiming to use the set mainly for 5c/10c cash games. Players buy in for 50bb usually, and we never play with more than a full ring, so I think I can get away with just 300 chips. 150 x 5c, 100 x 25c, 50 x $1 would allow 15 buy-ins with 10/6/3.

I was hoping to keep the price tag to $100, which seems to exclude buying most of the ceramics and china clay chips. I like the low denomination Monte Carlos at thepokerstore. It also seems that Bud Jones can be in the $0.30/chip range on these forums, so I may try to pick up some samples. It is a good point that it may be better to wait until I have a larger budget instead of getting a small mid/low price set. A new set should get a lot of use in the next year or so, though.

Glad you found your way here. And it amazes me how many inexpensive "better than plastic" chips come up for sale.
Subscribe to the classifieds so you get notifications as soon as a new post appears.
Good luck.

There are frequent offers for used CC on the classiefieds that are around your price range. You will eventually find some. I personally started out with Majestics (for the same reason, beeing a student is tuff when you want nice poker chips) and can really recommend them. But although I capped my budget from the beginning I already vaporized that budget cap and I'm now building a Paulson set. Believe me, you will end up at the same place that I'm at  :ROFLMAO:
Best advice: Get samples & start saving up!
