I just recently started playing poker with some of my buddies and looking to buy a table. We are currently in the works of finishing our basement so that is where it will go. I can’t decide between a round or an oval table. I think round might be a bit better for my needs but I can’t get over how much I love the way oval tables look. I also prefer a wooden table if possible. There will probably be a maximum of 7-8 at the table with us taking turns as dealer. We normally play hold ‘em and omaha. We also play many other card games too. The price range is probably about $3,000 maximum. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Don't be afraid to build your own. There are plenty of resources throughout this site that will guide you as far as materials go as well!

Oval tables are great for a casino looking to put the maximum number of tables with the maximum number of players in the minimum amount of space. But the sitelines are terrible for actually playing - you really can't see everybody at the table, and may have a hard time seeing their cards, if you're playing something like stud. The players on the ends of an oval may have a hard time seeing community cards and it will be impossible for them to rake a pot. And if it's a self dealt games, they'll need to be highly skilled at pitching to get the cards to everybody. Long story short, if you plan on seating 9 or 10 players, you'll want an oval (and a dealer.) But if you're playing 7 or 8 handed, you'd probably be much happier with a round or an octagon.
