I need some help in deciding between my first set

I have narrowed my options to Laurel Crowns, milanos or nevada jacks saloons.

I run a 6 man table that plays $20 buy in with 2 rebuys allowed. Usually we do .10/.25, but occasionally do .25/.25 and have been using dice chips and wanted a slight upgrade.
Looking to spend no more than $200.

I'd like to hear your guy's advice, but here are my pros and cons.

Laurel crown:
pros: design, can run .10/25(using 10,25,100), ceramic, cheapest($135 for 300), have plaques if I want to upgrade
cons: heard they are slippery, don't like the face the denoms I'd have to use
Milanos:
pros: can run .10/.25 as I can relabel using gear labels, cheapish($150 w labels for 300), I have heard they are a well made chip for price point
cons: not crazy in love w design
Nevada jacks saloon:
Pros: Best design, best made chip out of the 3
Cons: most expensive(200- for 225), can't play .10/.25

If it were me, I’d drop the 0.10 chip as you’ll probably only see one used preflop each hand (most raises will be multiples of 0.25)? If short-handed and you don’t want to play 0.25/0.25, just post one blind. Just a thought as the 0.10 seems redundant and makes your purchase simpler!

I made a mistake in my og post:

Laurel Crowns I would run 10 .5c chips, 18 .25c chips and 15 $1 chips

Milanos I would run 10 .5c chips, 18 .25c chips and 15 $1 chips

Nevada jacks saloon I would run 20 .25c chips and 15 $1 chips

There’s a giveaway for a cash set. You’d just have to find some fracs for it

Do .25/.25

Get samples! I know there is a thread of some free ones available.

There is also a resource calculator for chip counts. Here's what I'm thinking.

100x25c
200x1s
100x5s

This would expand you to a full table of eight players.

Get samples!

The giveaway that requires the winner to “pay it forward” and do a giveaway of $150? Not exactly a giveaway, except for the guy who’s giving the first set.

Welcome @coledtran !

While I own a sample set of the Laurel Crown sample set, if it was me I would keep looking. Slippery, rounded and not very attractive in my opinion.

There are lots of options on the @BR Pro Poker website, a bit more costly but really nice chips.

I love clay but also ceramics are fun to mix in. Not everyones flavor but @Pinesol13 is running a group buy for some Mario Brothers chips that are just cool and go all the way down to a penny! Yes I am ordering a set!

Something to think about, but if this is an older players game, maybe not as appropriate. I am an early 80s kid so these are just cool for those of us that grew up in that Era.

Also many are going with the Cards Mold ceramics from China which run about $.30 a chip. While many are making customs on these, there are folks that offer others to join on group buys. But there is a long lead time on these as they have to cross the Ocean.

Hope that you find your chips and actually scratch the itch which unfortunately many of us do not and continue buying chips! This hobby has a way of quickly becoming an obsession!

Welcome to the forum! You'll find plenty of opinions here. :)

Normally we would suggest you get samples so you can put your hands on them and see how you like them in person. On eBay you can get a sample of Laurel Crowns for $10, Nevada Jack Saloons for $15, and Milanos for $12. It seems like you have a pretty tight budget, though, so adding $37 just to help narrow down your selection might not be practical.

If that's the case, then you may just have to take our word for it.

Laurel Crowns aren't well regarded here; their printing quality can be hit or miss, and most people don't like the way they feel. Milanos and Nevada Jacks (either Skulls or Saloons) are pretty well regarded for budget chips.

If you're not crazy in love with the Milanos, I'd skip them. No need to spend money on chips you don't love - not even budget chips.

You might be able to get Nevada Jack Saloons with semi-custom denominations, i.e. you could get a set that includes a 5c or 10c chip so that you can play your smaller stakes game. They don't seem to be offered in a semi-custom via the website, but the folks at ABC Gifts and Awards are great to work with; go to https://abcgiftsandawards.com/contact-us/ and ask them if they can make a NJS set with semi-custom denominations and see what they say. It would probably be an upcharge, making the NJS the most expensive of the three you're looking at, but IMHO it would be worth it to get something you'll really be happy with.

6 person cash game at your stakes can probably be done with 300 chips. As others have said, I would ditch the 0.10 and play 0.25/0.25 because you can get by with fewer denominations. Your bank needs are only $360.

120x $0.25
100x $1
80x $5
gives $530 bank

You can simplify things and get exactly 1 rack of each denom, which raises bank slightly to $625, in case you get a couple more players or raise your buyins to $30.

$200 budget for 300 chips can be a bit tight, but under the right circumstances you'd be surprised at what you can get. The recent Majestic Star sale from The Chip Room, for example. Well used chips, for sure, but genuine ex-casino Paulsons.

Get samples. Your pros and cons are from what you can see. How chips feel in hand and the sound they make are a big factor to me. At first i also loved the Nevada Jaks for the desing. Now i feel like they are too busy. I do have ceramic set, but i dont like the sound they make. But i absolutly love the sound of Milanos. I did not love the desing of Milanos. Did some cleaning and oiling and i thinl they look pretty good. Welcome to the forum :)

This is a very good advise, no point spending on chip that you don't like which you may end up wasting more money getting another set down the road

The pricing on the recent Majestic Star is crazy, you can get a 500 chip set ($1x200, $5x200, $25x80, $100x20) for just $193

I had previously bought a rack of roulette with the intention to be use as fracs for the set at just $25

Making a Legit 600 Casino Chip Set at only $218 total cost excluding shipping tax etc almost felt unreal
