So I've got a few barrels of two different chips that have felt marker on them that I have had no luck removing. The chips are otherwise in great shape with sharp edges.

There will be two rounds of this contest (if there is enough interest).

Round 1 - submit your plan of attack for each chip

4 contestants will be selected and will be shipped one of each chip

Round 2 - each contestant selected will be shipped one of each chip in question

Winner selection - whoever comes up with a repeatable process for cleaning a chip with the least damage to the chip with picture proof will receive 19 more of that chip to make a complete barrel.

Chip target #1 - Purple roulette with side felt

Chip #2 - Pyramid Casino with felt on top and sides

I have tried nail polish remover, alcohol soaks, SOS pads (think that has been the best for the purple so far), sand paper, etc.

I am looking forward to someone coming up with something (or at least learning something in the process)!

Thanks
Grant

I KNOW! They are otherwise in great shape. I paid a bunch for them thinking I could easily get it off... no such luck yet.
I'd love to offer advice, but sadly I do not believe you will find success. I imagine the chips are too pourous (spelling?) For it to come out with any degree of satisfaction. Fuck that guy.

My plan of attack will involve a bucket of water and a soldering iron. I hope I win.

OMG. Who does that to CHIPS??

Somebody was lurking around this site, saw a reference to side paint, and took it literally. :ROFLMAO:

The only thing I can think of is to get a permanent marker to match the base (maybe a shade or two lighter) and try to color within the lines. N.B., this is not an entry.

I doubt that Magic Eraser will work, but I'd give it as shot anyway (both before and after trying the attempt below).

Best chances are probably marking the area over with a dry erase marker, then soaking in dry erase board cleaner solution (which is mostly alcohol, but the dry erase marker should 'soften' up the felt marker ink for easier removal). Not worth a barrel of chips for me to do the actual R&D work, though. :p

Hmmm, I have both at work, I will try this tomorrow.

Chip one: It pains me but I wonder about spinning up a barrell of the chips and l i g h t l y sanding the permanent marker off? WD-40 perhaps???

Chip two: I wonder about Goo Gone and a magic eraser?

Also curious about the above mentioned Dry Erase marker. I have my doubts though, works well on hard surfaces but on a porous surface????

Peanut butter works wonders on breaking down chewing gum, especially in hair or on fabrics. On clay chips, dunno....

It depends on the ink. I have one batch of chips that were marked with 2 different markers.

One type of marker ink came off with long soaks (several days/weeks) in rubbing alcohol with intermittent scrubbing (see top row in photo below); the other marker ink didn't come off at all (bottom row). I tried alcohol, Wd-40, and white vinegar, and that didn't work on the bottom row. I'd like to try paint thinner next, but I'm in no hurry to buy paint thinner for 12 or so chips.

For the rubbing alcohol cleaning method, used a soup bowl or glass jar with a lid, should keep the alcohol from evaporating. Every day or so, I'd have to do some additional manual scrubbing with a toothbrush or dish cleaning pad, but slowly, the ink dissolved and came off. Alcohol didn't damage the clay chip, and didn't damage the hotstamp on the other side of the chips.
