I'm new to PCF so this is probably a dumb question.

I've heard a lot of references to 'RCH molds' but I'm not exactly sure which mold that is. Is it just the regular top hat and cane mold?

Additionally, is the mold determined by how long ago the chips where produced? Or are all the molds still currently being used? How much does the mold affect the price of the chips? Do higher end chips or higher priced sets tend to have one mold over another? How much should the mold affect my purchasing decisions other than personal visual appeal? Do you guys have a favourite mold? I'm excited to hear your opinion.

Thanks for all the help.

you can learn more on paulson molds on Robert Eisenstadt (RIP) website here: https://www.antiquegamblingchips.com/molddesign_manmade.htm#md76

there's also house mold. (my fav is house mold of casino closed Sands)

THC is generelly considered the better of the two. Other than estetic reasons, the RHC mold have the hat very close to the edge. This makes chips on that mold more prone to chipping (fleabites). The THC mold has an outer ring beyond the hat, making it less vulnerable.

My personal preference is THC but I certainly don’t scoff at RHC. There are VERY nice chips made on that mold as well.

RHC stands for Reverse Hat and Cane.

THC stands for Top Hat and Cane.

IHC stands for Inverted Hat and Cane which is used on 43mm oversized chips.

The most popular mold is the THC mold for looks and durability. RHC chips tend to get flea bites faster. I also know the RHC mold is much newer than the THC mold but I can't give you dates. IHC chips also tend to cost a lot because they are more scare, but boy are they a pleasure to handle. There are other Paulson molds such as Web mold, No mold, House mold, etc. The most common you'll see listed are RHC and THC chips. THC sets typically cost more than RHC in most cases, mint chip to mint chip. My advice is to buy what you like. Your wallet is going to take a major hit on this forum, be prepared.

There are close to twenty different molds used by Paulson over the years (1965-present), excluding specific casino house molds (too many to count).

You know what mold nobody ever talks about? That denomination mold / house mold that all the AC casinos use.
I've never handled them, but since they all look the same even though they're all different, they're kind of annoying.
Here’s a couple from eBay:

I learned to play at the Taj over 20 years ago and the feel of these chips is what got me into chipping.

Never having handled the Pineapples, I would probably put them in the SCV/Pips zone. House molds are not for me, but some of the Sahara's and Stardusts sure do look cool.

Essentially:
outer ring = good
no outer ring = bad

I like these...

I thought someone with this mold, that can't find 100's or 500's would want them for the sets.

They would go with any of the Paulson Mold Fantasy Chip Sets.

Since I didn't sell them, thought I would try and build a set of them.

when I go to the ice cream store, I get a sundae with foo foo fun flavors, not just a boring bowl of plain vanilla with no toppings
so when I make a playable set of chips, I get house mold over boring RHC or THC

House, like my current avatar - or the attached Sands chip - just something about a casino that goes the distance...

I love Paulson clay chips. I get excited over the chips, chip design, and inlay design more than anything else. I don’t care if they came from a real casino or not. So I really like almost all of the paulson fantasy chips (looking away from you Classics) and love all of the NAGB chips. BUT the well designed chips on house molds from some historic casinos like Dunes, Trop, Stardust, Sands etc may be my favorite of all because the mold really sells the whole experience, especially since inlays can be recreated but mold cannot. And my players who really don’t care about chips that much I think we would really be impressed with one of those house mold sets.
