After all these years of dice chips, I've decided it's time to upgrade. Unfortunately, I'm on a very tight budget so have limited options. After some research have narrowed my choice down to either Milano's or Dunes. Keep going back and forth so looking for some advice.

Really like the feel of the Milano's and the design is nice too. However, ordered a sample set and I chipped one of them just lightly messing around with them and have read some reviews online of people saying they have cracked or broken them too. Love the design of the Dunes and they seem really durable but that seems to be because they are plastic and really do not like how "plasticy" they do feel. Going to be using these for awhile so durability is something I am concerned about as another upgrade is far down the road.

And for what it's worth, these will be used in a cash game played roughly twice a month.

Anyone have any experience, thoughts, suggestions, ideas on which would be the better option?

Thanks,

What stakes? You can find some nice vintage casino chips for not too much if you don't need fractionals or hundreds. I suspect the costs aren't that different from Dunes or Milanos, for that type of set. But the casino sets will be used and you might prefer new Dunes to used casino chips.

Are you in a hurry? The Majestics might be a good option as well.

.25/.50 averaging six players so looking for the standard .25c/$1/$5 combo. Any links or suggestions as to where to look would be greatly appreciated?

You do need fracs, but you could use $25s (I do in my set). $2.50s can also work. The classifieds here and on chiptalk are the best bet. eBay can also work.

The $0.25 chip is a dagger in your budget. No, a mighty wrecking ball to the budget. A rack of casino quarters is ouchy expensive and hard to come by. For example, I paid about $2 per chip for outpost quarters several years ago. They can't be found in large numbers today and if you did, I think they would go for $300+ per rack.

One option is to use $25 chips for quarters, but many folks do not want to do that.

If you need $0.25 chips and have a budget, the fantasy chips are the way to go.

Sorry for the probably dumb question, but "fracs"?

And googled Majestics......wow!, those look nice and are in my price range! Thanks!

Fracs = fractionals, like $0.25 and $0.50 chips.

Majestics will be helluva chips when ready.

D'oh! Should have realized that. Foolishly thinking it was a type of chip.

The Majestic's do look really sweet. Guessing they are not released yet? Is there an estimated release date? Not seeing anything on the site.

December-ish is a recent guess. Have you looked at the championship poker series chips as well? The look and feel is different than Milanos, but they are in your price range.

Fracs, are hella expensive. My choice for $.25s is old roulettes, and those can occasionly be gotten for a song, not "this way to cheap street", but a song :)

Fracs can be cheap....buy some inexpensive casino $1's and relabel them...I got some Garden City chips and had labels made to make them quarters. They are like $65 for 100 chips. Or like mentioned above, get some roulette chips. Clay Paulson's are 25 cents each from Casino Aztar and come in 7 colors (red were sold out)

If you look in the classified ads, I posted a wtb hot stamp roulette chips thread.....I have pics of those roulette aztars in all the colors...it's the first pic in the thread

^^^ this. They have some gorgeous looking chips and feel pretty good too.

Majestics, if you can wait until they arrive (estimated December, so figure probably Feb-Mar in reality given inevitable delays and the Chinese New Year). If you want them now, go with the CPS chips (Championship Poker Series). Both are china clays, similar to the Milano line of chips (but nicer, imo).

If the choice would be between Milanos and CPS chips I would go Milanos all day long. I feel the Milanos look better, sound better, feel better, and probably stack better (maybe not, I was on a roll though). I have had both, sold the CPS chips I had that where supposed to "replace" the Milanos, and still play with the Millano set. The one thing the CPS chips do have going for them, imo, is better stock color options in the the lower denoms like you are wanting OP. That being said though, and understand the CPS chips aren't "bad" at all (TONS better than dice chips, I would take the Milanos hands down for the "playability".

Also, don't underestimate Craigslist (or sites like it). 99% of the ads are going to be for dice chips (OFFICIAL CASINO WEIGHT!), but if you have persistance and patience it's possible to get some good stuff. I have a Nevada Jacks set for cash and a Milano tourney set that both came from the Seattle craigslist. Even got a birdcage and racks with the Nevada Jacks. :)

Interesting how opinions vary on both the CPS chips and the Milano chips. I have never cared for how the Milano chips look, feel, or sound -- one of my least favorite china clays ever.

It is interesting for sure, and also what makes hobbies like this so much fun. For me the CPS chips feel and handle less than desirable because of the extreme cross hatching and the weird bevel on the edge, the cross hatching also makes them look like plastic. They look especially "plasticky" to me after some use when the crosshatching starts to get worn down a little, looks like faded plastic to me.

Indeed. Count me in as a Milano fan. It's still my favourite china clay. This is why it's so important to get samples of any chips you wish to buy, as you won't know what you like until you see them in person.

I'm not a Milano fan... I liked the colors better before I saw them in person. I like the feel OK, but teh irregularities bothered me - in clay, the same irregularities look cool, but with the trapezoids, the irregularities bothered me... and the molding was shallow and irregular (one of my sample set was nearly no-mold on one side.)

As always - get samples if you're going to drop money on a big set!

^^^ True story about the shallow mold, they are definitely on the shallow side. With moderate use the wear becomes noticeable, I still like them but it is a downside for sure.

I liked the Milanos, but then I found this crazy group of people online who collect chips and tried my first sample set of Paulsons...

@CommanderDonk hopefully you can wait for the majestics, they look to be the best cc's so far. Otherwise, sounds like you are doing the right thing and getting sample sets.

Remember faux clays? Those were like 5 cents each. I remember being impressed with how they looked (based on 320x240px images probably) like they'd feel but have never actually handled any. I have a Dunes sample set and Crazy Horse $1k sample chip and I don't care for the feel or the inconsistency between the label- one

How do faux clays compare with Milanos, Crazy Horse, Dunes compression etc. chips (think these are all roughly the same)? And how are the faux clays holding up after all these years for anyone who still has a set?

I just remembered the giant injection mark on the faux clays- maybe they're better off being fondly remembered as a relic of their time.

Search forum Apache on here under Marketplace. Look for thread named "Coming soon". You'll find more info.

Keep an eye on classified section here. Something Will comme up. Craig list and eBay are always good places to look. If you got time something Will come up.
