All,

I hesitate to post this but @liftapint told me to “Just do it” so here goes.

My family on my wife’s side experienced a tragedy on December 10. While my Mother-in-law was picking up our niece and nephew from the rural bus stop they were all viciously attacked by four large Rottweilers who had escaped a fenced yard. My wife’s mother tried to protect the kids and gave her life in doing so. The kids were critically injured and life flighted to a hospital equipped to deal with their severe injuries. Zac’s (7 years old) injuries, while severe, were non life threatening. His sister Leah’s (9 years old) injuries were much worse. She underwent numerous surgeries to reconstruct her head and face as well as losing her left leg below the knee.

My Mother-in-law had just enough life insurance to cover the burial and pay off her bills so that’s settled but the kids have been in the PICU since the 10th and Leah still has a long road to recovery. Her father (wife’s brother) works for the state prison system and mother is employed by McDonalds and there is no way they can cover their mounting medical expenses and time lost from work while at the hospital. They also have three other children.

I’m asking that if you are so led and financially able please consider giving to help them out. Nothing is to small. I also ask if you have a Facebook account that you share their story so it reaches the most people.

I have a friend in the Masons who is helping sponsor Leah to be part of their wonderful program but the need is still there. Thank you so much for reading this and whether you give or not prayers are always welcome for their family.
THANK YOU, and thanks to those of you who have already donated. I’m humbled beyond words.

this really upsets me on many levels. appreciate your sharing. wife will post to her fb/linkedin networks.

Thank you John!

I have no words. Stories like this tear me up. Thoughts to your family and those poor kids and the loss of your mother in law.

Thank you Craig, I hope to get an update about Leah today. They are trying to wing her off the breathing tube.

I am so sorry to hear this. Thoughts and prayers to you and your family. They can also pursue the dog owners home insurance or a lawsuit to cover the medical bills if possible.

That's so awful. I've got a limit set that I was planning to sell. I'm going to do a charity auction with it and donate the proceeds to the GoFundMe if that's cool.

I'll bid on them

Ugh, this is tragic on so many levels, prayers go out to your extended family.

I've got some chips that I'll auction and donate funds here shortly.

probably those as well.

Incredibly tragic and so so so sorry to hear this. I am very saddened.

I have a charity Auction that currently ends on Thursday night, and immediately after that I will run another one for you. I will also make a direct contribution as well.

It is a tragedy on its own and a most heroic thing your Mother-in-law did.
I do not want to sound rude, but is the owner of the dogs not responsible for the dogs and for all the costs that transpires from the actions of the dogs?
In Belgium the owner is obliged by law to pay for everything, but most people (in Belgium) are insured for damages to third party.

For now the investigation is ongoing and the DAs office will be the sole decider of if charges are filed or not.

The dog owner being a close relative has no bearing on whether they will file charges or not. I believe it has more to do with criminal negligence.

I’m hoping the dog owner’s insurance will step up to take care of this but at this point I have no idea if that insurance even exists. I sure hope it does.
