Hello all, I'm new to the forums here.

I decided to invest/ splurge on a decent set of chips for my home game.
I picked up a large set of Paulson Classics TH&C from eBay and they are in the mail, i'm pretty sure there the real deal.

My concern is when i searched for Paulson Classics i came across this link:

http://www.alibaba.com/product-deta...753736562.html?spm=a2700.7724857.35.19.I0s1sR

I assume these are knock off's of Paulsons, So my question is, are there a lot of fake Paulson chips out there?

If so how do you determine whats fake?

I'm a total newb here so go easy on me...

thanks,

Matt B

Welcome to PCF!

Wow, those are ballsy. The only easy to spot difference for me is the missing "$". I've never seen a fake "Paulson Chips" mold before. That's kind of worrying.

EDIT: I guess they have cash chips too:

Do these look like hybrid ceramics?

Can I asked what you got? How many? and what the cost was? Interesting....

Welcome to the community.

the first link shows 2 rows of different chips. Looking around it looks like the top row are Authentic and the bottom row the same as the other Alibaba ones.
The shading on the numbers is different.

Wow those really do look like the real deal, but I wonder if they are using pictures of the real Classics to sell the knockoffs. The chips in your original link seem to somewhat off in color and the background of the center decal is different than the actual classic. However, the last link you posted righ above my post look exactly like the Classics down to the background on the center decal. I think the difference in shading may be a light artifact, but my guess is that those are pictures of actual Classics, while the chips you would get from them would have some readily apparent differences. Whatever, this is a clear trademark infringement and someone should inform GPI of this (assuming they don't know already).

hey there,

the link you mention shows 2 rows of chips. the bottom row has the numbers all dark. All websites Apache etc. that sell the Classics have chips that look like the upper row. The actual denomination numbers have light edges giving a little 3d look.

Is it just me, or do the top hats on the mold from the first link look too short?

I just saw the $900 1 bid.

I am missing something probably

Ugh on my mobile phone, eBay comes up weird. Yea it's the $900 bid that won it, not the BIN for $1400. Agree that's a nice score as entry Paulsons. OP will come back for more in due time... :D

good point

i think i need a sample set. do they do that?

still pretty overtly breaking copyright. No wonder the borgota got all those chips as fakes in their game.

I'll have to look into getting a sample set...

And this is why no casinos will buy chips from China, even Macau. Too much security risk.

There are many Chinese companies that advertise poker chips on alibaba...... most are not manufacturers, but only fronts for ordering. They use a variety of deceptive practices, including posting photos of real Paulson chips in many varieties (but that's not what you'll get if you order). The Chinese factories that these order front companies deal with have no issues making fakes or replicas of ANYTHING, and chips are no exception. With very few exceptions, quality is very poor.

Even when ordering a knock-off chip (typically plastic, but could be anything from china clay to slugged ABS), you aren't guaranteed to get what's actually in the photo. They will promise you the world to get your money, and even send sample chips that won't match the production chips you buy. Totally buyer beware (and avoid, if you're smart). Trust nothing you see or hear.

Agreed, very possible they use images of real chips and send fake ones. Sort of like that image of Vineyard chips that was on Ali.

But I think Aliexpress has a money back guarantee as well, if you don't get what you expect.

I wish it was under $1 a chip...

After doing 4 hrs of research, and seeing availability (pretty much just Apachepokerchips) i felt that $1.4 a chip was worth it.

So i Used BIN.

Which was a good thing because the seller contacted me by phone just to make sure i was legit and said he had had 2 offers for $1200 outside of eBay.
One of which was from a reseller.

My plan is to put together a nice 750 set and maybe recoup a couple of hundred dollars by selling the extras.

The 1s 5s and 10s are unused. I wish i could use the 10s because i like the color so much. But i typically start my blinds at $25....

Matt.

Welcome to the chip community! You can’t go wrong w/ Paulsons.

We all long for the days when chips were under $1/chip, but hindsight is 20/20. What you got is fair market value nowadays. Every once in a while you will get a good deal on eBay, but unless you’re constantly focused on it, waiting to pounce, it’s tough to grab a deal. They always go fast.

The chips do keep their value and it’s not hard to sell off individual racks because a number of others have this set and can always use extras. You can almost always sell the chips later to recoup your original cost, and maybe then some.

Enjoy your chips in the meantime. And go through the forum and check out people chip pictures. It will give you an idea of your next chip set. <cue lightning & thunder>

Thanks, Yes i felt it was a fair price, and if i waited they would be gone.

Next chip set !!! HA !! I'm already browsing photos of some incredible collections...thinking maybe another 750 wouldn't hurt right??

Slippery slope indeed.

Something hit me today… A while back, there was a fellow in China who messaged me in obviously machine translated English wanting to buy some of my chips I had listed on eBay. Since I can speak/write in Chinese, I wrote back in Chinese to save him the hassle of translating, and we got to talking.

He said he was a chip collector in China, and that it’s difficult because gambling chips are considered contraband in China. There’s a good chance that if you send casino chips with denominations on them, they will get confiscated at customs. Chips without denominations (ones that say no cash value) may or may not be confiscated. It’s still a risk, but you will have a better chance of convincing a customs official that they’re not gambling chips.

In the end, I thought it was too much risk for me and didn’t sell him the NCV casino Paulson chips (he wanted a lowball price too). If the chips get caught in customs, eBay and Paypal will probably screw me over and I’d be out money and chips. He kept on asking week after week, but I didn’t want to take the risk.

What I just realized is that the guy might have been working for a factory as a counterfeiter (or “copier”), and that the chips may be similar to something a client wanted to copy.

Well it looks like you got a nice deal on those chips. That's crazy that they can sell fake Paulson chips like that. I'm sure that the "china pauls" have stickers. So when you get yours in the mail you will be able to tell if they are stickers or inlays.

I got sold fake world top hat and canes. They look perfect but feel ABS like and are clearly not real when you get them in hand. I'm hoping the person on the forum who sold them to me just didn't know but I think i might've just gotten burned for a serious amount of coin.

Can you post some pics ?

I will soon.

Good. We would like to see photos of fakes. It's a good thing to share with the community. Regardless if you out the seller, or work it out in private, please post pics of the chips.

I'd like to see photos of the chips. What makes you believe they are fakes? What are the mold markings?
