expensive micro sets (1 Viewer)

had a random thought..... So i host .25/.50 games and obviously i play lower stakes for a reason. so why are some micro stake sets selling for 2k+? like if u can blow 2k on a set of chips id assume youd be playing higher stakes no?

TL;DR... Good point but it's just a hobby. Do whatever makes you happy in it.

I’m sure for most people it’s really health reasons. Cheap chips interact negatively with Casino felt and release poisonous gases which could make one seriously ill or even be fatal in just a few hours of playing. Everyone knows that the production method of quality compression molded or ceramic chips prevents the release of these deadly gases.

Trust me people say I look a lot like a doctor.

Dude, there is no correlation between your stakes and chips people sell...
Some of this sets are unique and scarce...
It is up to you if you use plastic tokens or golden nuggets.

This is the truth. I’ve seen plenty of pictures of $5/10 games being played with the crappiest of plastic chips.

Bought my most expensive set at $3k and used it a week later for a $20 buy-in.

The honest answer is I simply like to have sets that accommodate whatever stakes we're playing. Depending on who is coming to my game, we are playing with either a $20 (rarity) or $200 buy-in. It's like a ten-person fantasy football league with good friends, where eight people want much higher stakes, but not at the cost of losing the other two players. I assume most people playing microstakes are doing so socially.

In All fairness people spend money on expensive golf clubs, computer systems, and other sports equipment for games they’re not even good at. Same with poker chips. Lol
yeah have to say its funny how butt hurt everyone gets on this forum over a question lol. but yes i totally get that. seems people think i meant they should all be playing 5/10 NL but i was thinking just more like 1/2 game if youre dropping hot cash on a set. also never considered the answer of it makes the players happy because i have sets from $100 to $700 and honestly no one really cares for the difference because they arnt into chips like me

Honestly, I think many people would think you’re crazy if you’re spending more than $100 or so on a set.
After all, you can get official casino-weight chips with a case for that on Amazon, right?

I’ve never had a regular crew that appreciated chips, it’s all about poker. Going to meet ups is where the appreciation factor of chipping really kicks in. ;)
You are amongst friends.
Also, some of the best people I’ve ever met were chippers. The life I currently live is all because I went to one particular meet up to spend time with like minded friends.
Chipping has been truly amazing for me.

I’ve read the answers and I haven’t noticed any butthurt. Honestly, you asked a stupid question and we all gave you thoughtful answers. Not sure what more you want? Do you think .25/.50 is dumb stakes? Is that what you’re getting at? Sure, we’re all playing single A ball at our home games.

Edit: wow that reads like a butthurt reply, ha! Let me clarify one thing: I’m not butthurt that I play low stakes. I won’t say “microstakes” because I think 5 cent ten cent is microstakes, but I wouldn’t argue about it. Anyway, I know plenty of people play for higher stakes and put in the time and work to play at higher levels. Good for them. I’m happy to play low stakes, low risk, and usually lower skill level poker. Poker is fun!

For me, it's not about the stakes... It's about spending time with the people I care about. About being a good host, putting on horrible movies (Wolf Cop), and letting really good bourbon flow. Yes I want to take all their money, but when I flop quads and they pay into me, I'm happy to take only $20.

The chips are like tools... You can have a really expensive tool set, and still build some cheap kid furniture with it if you want. There's nothing wrong with that.

Buying nice chips is like some people buying art. Even if their practical use is for far lower stakes, it's pleasing. And again, if the use is 10-20 years, it's not a ton per event.

Now who really makes me mad is people that claim they will be hosting 1-2 and 2-5 games but will only invest in 20/rack stock sluggers. Those people should be can afford to go up or down 500-1000 in a session and at the very least should invest in a semi-custom set from @ABC Gifts and Awards for 80/rack.

People can afford to play higher stake didn't mean People have to

People using the premium Cash set aren't looking for recognition from peer, just enjoy using them with the peer.

There are people in my group who care and people in my group who don't care about the chips. I will gladly share my limited knowledge to those who are interested and ask those who don't care to handle the chips with care even thoug they might forget

Maybe it's your condescending behavior and know it all attitude that's rubbing some people around here the wrong way, pal.
Maybe your fragile ego is reading too deep into someone simply asking questions on a forum literally made for people to ask questions…. ‍

I hate money, I love chips and I love the friends I've made on this forum. We were blown away at chip costs when we joined the forum... and that was then.
Like Tuna mentioned, without this place we wouldn't have gained half the friends that now feel like family to us. And none of them ever bat an eye at any stakes, big or small. There are some people out there that want the best and the most expensive. There are others that want to keep costs at a minimum. It's all about staying within the means of your budget, whatever that may be.
Either way, can't spend it when you're dead *shrugs*
