Elliptical table journey (1 Viewer)

Wow, very interesting build! You really went down your own path for numerous things. How to you like the surface foam that you got? Not many people go with 1/2" foam. And, how do you like the way that LED lighting turned out without another diffuser in front of it? I like the idea of an elipse shape, seems to make a lot of sense, the table looks great.
Thanks. This is the second table that I used the 1/2" thick YAT sew foam and I like it a lot, not a fan of the hardness of 1/4" closed cell foam.
I never thought I would go with lights but after scanning the Table Porn thread for ideas I decided to give it a try. Using the pre-enclosed rope light seemed like a less expensive option and easier to install than adding a diffusor. You do see hot spots a little but I don't mind the look. I'll see how it works out when I actually have a game on it.

Finally moved the table indoors. Trimmed the cherry plywood topper I had from my last table to the shape of this one. Nothing fancy but comes in handy when needed.

Very unique build! Is the plywood topper directly on the rails? Does the foam on the rails return back to form?

My topper lays directly on the padded rail. There is plenty of surface area making contact with the rail and I have not seen deformity of the rail foam yet.

I hadn't considered something like that. Is that 3/4 inch....any bowing in the middle if you were to put stuff in the middle of the table?

I used 3/4” Cherry veneered cabinet grade plywood. It’s pretty flat and stable. I made it almost a year ago and I haven’t seen any sagging yet. I dont place very heavy items on it but have had dinner guests of 8 with normal food and drink on it with no issues.

Just added the custom cloth purchased from Chanman Poker Tables Inc.
Special thanks to @Bloo_Design & @T_Chan for a job well done.
I could not be happier with the service they have provided and highly recommend using them for your custom cloth needs.
Sorry, my photography skills are lacking and its hard to capture the true colors of the cloth.

I started an Elliptical table #2 thread but I think I'll just add to this one instead. As I started to gather parts to build a second table I'm questioning which parts I want to keep with my main home table and which will end up on the other table. I have fallen in love with the antique legs I picked up and want to slide them under the current elliptical table to see how it looks.

I made a couple changes to the table. I kept the antique legs on this table and swapped out the lighted whisper vinyl rail with a crocodile rail with 3/4" oak faced riser.

I had the 54" round top from the antique table laying around and enough extra materials to build a round table.
I'm not a big fan of having a hard racetrack surface but this Tiger Oak (1/4 sawn) was just too pretty to cover it all up.
The 5" rail will be crocodile vinyl to match the elliptical, 7" of exposed wood and a Ø30" padded inside surface.

I will continue to look for a nice old pedestal to use for this build but may paint the one shown below black for now.

I couldn’t find plywood bigger then 4’ wide locally and I’m trying to make from materials on hand as much as possible. The rail was made from 4 segments using #10 biscuits and kreg pocket screws. The center is padded with 2 layers of headliner and then black neoprene. I’m hoping I have enough scrap foam to pad the rail using 8 segments.
