Ellicott City, MD Flooding (1 Viewer)

Dennis and I are fine, from a property perspective. The damage occurred in the historic section on main street. That area dates back to the 1800's and there is a TON of history there. We are staying clear as most of the sidewalks and roads were destroyed. Check out my FB page if you would like, I've linked some pics and videos. It is devasting. 6 inches of rain fell in 3 hours, of which 4 of that fell in 1 hour. The small "creek" that flows next to main street flooded, and washed out the area. The patapsco river is at the bottom of the street, and with all that rain, it had no place to go.

I'm glad everyone is okay. Absolutely crazy....

I (hope) don't think any of our guys live in downtown Ellicott City. This was pretty much limited to several blocks of the Main Street, which is on a steep slope, like a funnel leading down to the Patapsco River. It's where almost all of the quaint restaurants and shops are located.

This happens there fairly often, though not this badly for about 40 years. But we humans, being naturally stupid, keep rebuilding in the same spots, daring Mother Nature. Think New Orleans...

As one local said in an interview, "Nature bats last."

Like Mark said, our properties are fine... we have Ellicott City zipcodes, but not in old downtown

Had no idea this was coming Saturday afternoon so my daughter and I were at MD LIve playing blackjack and had to drive home in the rain. A couple of the local roads were flooded and a couple of trees down, so had to take a round about detour sticking to the main roads but not really a problem

Yeah, I'm fine. I was actually driving on Main Street at the very start of the storm (heading to my Saturday night game, thank goodness for the early 1k chip bonus :)) and it was already starting to get bad. That area of Main Street is prone to flooding, so I went the other way home, and didn't hear about the damage until Sunday morning.

It truly is devastating. I drive through Main Street weekly (it's the quickest way to get to my parents who live in the other section of Ellicott City) and just the amount of destruction of a very vibrant area is hard to wrap my head around.

I used to frequent downtown Ellicott City.

If there are any cleanup efforts, I have a bunch of people here at work that would like to help, including me.

I grew up in the EC zip and still frequent old town at least once a month. It truly has a unique small town charm that is a breathe of fresh air compared to the surrounding suburbs and Columbia hustle and bustle. I couldn't have ever imagined the devastation seen in all the pictures and videos. I was actually going for a trail run along the Patapsco River about 5 mins away from old town 2-3 hours or so before the rain started. Tons of folks were out grilling, rope-swinging, canoeing, etc. It was overcast but man, this beast of a storm really seemed to come out of nowhere. Hoping for the best for the folks who live and have businesses in the area.

I read about some looting. Was it isolated or rampant?

No idea, but I did see that Portallis (an upscale Italian restaurant) was looted. I would assume other bars and restaurants were too.

My friend lives in Ellicott City and sent me pics. It looks pretty crazy. The roads were collapsed and you could see into the basements of some of those downtown stores. I had no idea the storm was that bad. That rain did nothing where I am.

Essentially, the storm cell got "stuck" over parts of Howard and Baltimore County, and just didn't pass through. Usually those fierce storms hit and go. Not sure why it just stopped moving.

Truly devastating. The looting just makes me see red. Love historic EC and have spent many great days and evenings shopping, drinking and eating in some amazing and unique establishments. Like Bo said, this is a wonderful and historic treasure for our area. I've never seen anything like it, even during Agnes in 72. Some heroic stories coming out, and over 100 rescues were made, but tragically two people lost their lives.

Happy to report that Main St in Ellicott City is scheduled to reopen tomorrow at 5pm for vehicles and pedestrians...

Awesome to hear! I actually used to tend bar at The Phoenix and still keep in touch with a bunch of people in those EC businesses. I hadn't checked in on their progress lately, but next time I'm home in Catonsville, I'm going to be sure to head down to support those businesses.

I was #19 on the 100 beer wall. When did you tend bar there?

2005-2007. I think I'm number 101 and had done it in what was a record pace at the time of 7 days (5 drinking days with a two day break in the middle). Once I made a big deal of doing it quickly, some people took that as a challenge and destroyed that mark.

Also, my favorite story of my time at The Phoenix was when Mark, the owner, couldn't get somebody to wear the big red suit for "Breakfast with Santa." He told me at last call on a Saturday night (when I was plastered) that I drew the short straw and had to be back at 7:00 AM the following morning to play Santa. I managed to make it through without scarring the children for life, but was definitely not the ideal Santa. I spent the rest of the day bar hopping in Ellicott City as Santa. Somewhere, there are pictures of me drinking Grand Marnier and Miller Lite, smoking cigarettes through the beard.
