Hi guys! :)

I'm quite new to this hobby of collecting poker chips but I recently got hooked checking out all the different varieties of chips that's out there, in particular I really liked the design/layout/look of Dunes.

Since I'm from Sweden it seems that Dunes are quite hard to come by, at least from the research I've done, they seem to be available primarily through Apache Poker Chips which I ponder on perhaps ordering them from in the future (although the shipping cost is a lot). Then I found some chips called Casino Joker which seemed to replicate the look of Dunes and they happen to be more readily available for me at a cheaper cost.

The question I pose to myself and which I also would like some help in deciding is which ones I ought to go for, is there perhaps anyone here who has tried both of these and can say anything in regards to if there is a difference in quality between these two chips? Would it be worth six times the cost per chip (in total) to get the Dunes if one would not care about the different look of them? I should mention that I've ordered some Casino Joker chips to try them out. And I'm only talking about the copies of Dunes, the ones you can purchase now, not the "Commemorative"-branded ones.

I would very much appreciate if someone could help me with some advice here regarding the properties/qualities of these two chips, thanks! :)

The Casino Joker chips are NexGen plastic chips. They’re ok—decent design, square edges, not slugged. They have a hard feel and are very slippery.

The China clay dunes are have a somewhat softer feel, also are not slugged, and are also slippery, but not as much as the NexGens. They have a beveled edge, rather than sharp corners (just a matter of taste). IMO, the biggest advantage of the dunes is the edgespot progression. Great design.

There are four versions of the Dunes chips:
  • original Paulson clay casino chips
  • inexpensive china clay, first issue
  • cheap injection-molded plastic chips
  • inexpensive china clay, second issue
The Dunes chips in your picture are the second-issue china clays. The Joker Casino chips you refetenced are a clone of the cheap injection-molded plastic chips (similar chips were also sold as Nexgen Pro, etc.).

Thank you both so much for your replies and with such good information and knowledge!

I like the design/look of the Dunes much more than the Joker Casino chips and now also knowing the quality is higher on the former I might just splash out on them in spite of the shipping and customs cost. (Unless anyone knows a place where I can buy Dunes in Europe)

Place a Want to Buy ad for them, ask for Europe sellers. There’s probably some from the initial buy that might let some go.
