Based on this thread he has narrowed it down to four watches.

I "think" his preferences are #1 or #2.

I'm a watch guy myself...

It's a matter of personal taste Bill, but to me, Gold does not belong on a men's watch... So that narrows it down to #2 or #4 for me... Between those two, I like classic feel of Shinola better personally...

Having said that, he should get what HE likes the best! :p

Just in terms of the watch itself I'd pick #1. If this watch is just for me it's slam dunk #1 and it's not close, though I do admit I like it better in silver.

Going by what you described in your other thread, I think #4 fits best for the situation so that's what I voted for.

Then again, I haven't talked to your son and it's ultimately all about what he wants! Just make sure he understands the difference between automatic and quartz watches, and the maintenance involved with the former.

FYI - It's Runwell and not Rumwell, though a rum well isn't a bad idea ;)

I much prefer the alligator straps in 1 and 2 to the strap in 4. Overall I think I would say 2 personally. Unlike Paulo I have no problem rocking gold if done the right way though! :p

He won't narrow it down for me. I think #2, then 1 is a slightly preferred. He does like them all.

I'm not into the gold either. I kind of like the first option

If he is going to wear it everyday then get an automatic, if not then an automatic is a bad choice because the power reserve is only 38 hours and he will be constantly resetting it.

I have an ecodrive and love it. That one only needs to be worn about once every 6 months to recharge the battery.

There are also options for automatic storage.

[Newly Upgraded] Versa Automatic Double Watch Winder in Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005P1C55W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_xF2JybEBDM096

I love automatics just because the intricacy of their workings is like a work of art to me.

Although quartz watches are actually shown to be more accurate if you do not mind the battery.

If the citizen were silver, then that'd be my vote. But it's a personal preference.

I don't own these models specifically, but I own a Tissot Seastar and a Shineola Runwell sport. Wear them all the time as casual watches (neither are dress watches). Can't go wrong with either manufacturer. I voted the Shineola because I liked the style you picked a little better than the others ... purely personal taste.

Option 1 has an 80-hour power reserve.

Option 2 has an ETA-2825-2 movement which can be manually wound if it's not going to be worn. The recommendation for a winder above is also a good consideration, and can work as a future present.

Here is a similar/silver version of option 1.

Ah yes, some of the models in the link say automatic 80 on the face and some do not.

Most people know nothing about fine timepieces. Especially living in Detroit, I don't see how you can ignore the lifetime of free mocking and bad jokes that he would receive for wearing a Shinola watch.

Especially when you tell them the price.

you miss your cup of coffee this morning? or just old and grumpy? :)

I personally like #4 the best, but voted #2 because #4 seems too casual for most work settings.

I think it depends on who you are going to be around honestly. I've received more notice and compliments on a few of my lower-end watches than I have on my most expensive ones. The reality is that 99% of the people I am around don't know anything about watches.

If I know I'm going to be around people where fine timepieces are a possible topic of conversation, I'd much rather be wearing Tissot than Shinola or Citizen, but we are still at the very low end of the spectrum with Tissot.

For normal, everyday wear around friends and family? The Shinola has some appeal in both being a fashion brand and also being made in the city he lives in. The movement is solid, but I agree probably not worth the price.

Maybe the answer is like our answer for poker chips... BUY THEM ALL!

If I go with option two I'll probably get him one of these automatic winders. I've had the citizen eco driven watch for 10 years. I didn't even know about the winders :)

Had an extra one, actually. It vas a yolk, Bill. Sorry you didn't get it...

(I actually like the Shinola, but down here, we old, grumpy farts don't wear watches, ever.)
dont need a watch, once the sun hits 12 noon, its time for dinner and bed
