Doug Polk Ends YouTube Channel - Posts Final Video (1 Viewer)

Good for him. I am not really a DP fan but I share his sentiments about poker. 10 years ago I just want to be Durrr and play higher stakes poker full time. After playing poker for so many years the idea of going to the casino and playing 10 hours straight sounds so boring. The problem is that poker played properly is actually boring and requires tons of folding.

Doug has over 4M in recorded winning so if he is worth around 3-5M then why bother to continue doing something you are no longer interested in. I am kind of in the same boat except a losing player - lol. I am currently more interested in stocks and crypto trading as they just seem more interesting.

PS. I still love small stakes home game poker which is more about food, booze, and needling friends.

I wish him nothing but the best.

This, to me, is what it’s all about. Some folks can make a living playing poker. I’d wager that most of them just do it because they are good at it, but don’t actually enjoy it. They call it a grind for a reason.

To me, poker isn’t a way to make or win money, but is a game with friends and family. It started that way when I was four years old, and my outlook on it hasn’t changed nearly 40 years later. Money or chips exchanges hands, yes, and I’d much rather win than lose, but I look at it not much differently than going to the movies or a concert or something - or, in the cases of meet ups and chip conventions, they’re just vacations with friends.

If anyone is feeling burnt in poker, I *strongly* encourage them to just quit cold turkey. Maybe play a home game after a couple years if the desire comes back, but life is too short to keep playing something you don’t enjoy and often times the game will kick your teeth in if you keep playing when your head isn’t fully in the game. As for me, Ima keep playing my nickel and dime games because poker is still fun.

Here’s to hoping I catch y’all at a meetup down the road.

I remember being in my upper 20s, low 30s. I bounced around from job to job. I found something I loved, then fell out of love, then moved onto the next great thing.

For Doug Polk, this just happened to be poker. This isn't a video about poker, it's about life in general. He's just too young to notice it yet.

In the end, "If it ain't fun to do, it ain't worth doing."

I always enjoyed his videos and insight. Respect him even more now. Also couldn’t have timed it better, crazy to think what the future hold for poker given the times we are in.

Edit: anyone look at the Bravo app in the last few days?

I know exactly how he feels. I played professionally for about 12 years until I just lost the love of the game. I got to a point where I truly hated it. After I stopped, I went through a phase where the last thing I wanted to do was sit at a poker table. I know the exact feeling he had when he said he was playing in the main event and got to a point where he suddenly realized he just didn't want to be there anymore and just donked off his stack so he could leave. It took me a few years to even want to play again. Now, I do enjoy the game again, but only if it comes in small doses. I'll typically play in a home game with friends every other month or so, and play 2 or 3 mixed game tourneys in Vegas per year during the WSOP. That's about all I can take these days without hating the game again though lol. But in small doses with good people, I do enjoy playing again. I also feel like I'm playing my best poker now. That or I've just run really well over the past few years. Tough to know for sure because my sample sizes aren't very big nowadays. Perhaps he'll get to that stage as well in a few years where he enjoys playing in small doses, who knows, but watching his goodbye video bright back so many memories for me from my playing days. I like his content. He's a great player too. I wish him luck on his next journey. I'm happy for him. Happy to see someone walk away from that lifestyle while they're still young. He will be successful in whatever he does next. I'd bet on it.

I think that not being nominated in the Media Content of the Year for the poker awards in 2019, is 99%+ part of the reason why to stop doing what he does.

Was he really expecting to be nominated?

He quit poker half-way through the year and pretty much stopped doing any strategy videos after August.

The only reason he was uploading any kind of content after September was because of Mike Postle. 12 of his 17 videos from September-December are all about one thing... the Mike Postle mess.

I think so :)

It was kind of becoming obvious over the last year or so that his ego had really outgrown his web presence. The fact that he thinks people now want to watch him opine for 12-15 minutes a day about (day old) "breaking" news, kind of cements that theory.

But the fact that he thought he should've been nominated in the poker media category, given he completely quit the game (and even attacked the game of poker various times last year), is borderline delusional.

Ok, it's not borderline delusional, it straight up is delusional.

As a fan/viewer of Doug, the saddest part for me is that he never really understood his own value: that he is an incredibly talented poker entertainer... not a straight laced strategy guy, and certainly not as a news commentator. Hopefully he takes his 30s to figure it all out. I'd love to see him making great/fun content again some day. :(

I'll wrap it up with this DePaulo clip on "crypto-currency and politics expert, Doug Polk"...

 :ROFLMAO:

I like Doug. I liked his content. I liked the way he approached the game, and I think he is a pretty smart guy. Does he have an ego? Sure - everyone at the top of their professions does to some extent.

I will miss his content, but more I’m just happy that he is moving on from something he doesn’t enjoy anymore. I liken it to my dj career. Had a lot of good successes, but by my mid-30s, with a family and real career both in full force, I didn’t have time. Playing records became a chore. Digging for tracks even worse. I’ve not released a mix in seven years, nor had a gig in six.

Maybe I’ll get back into it, maybe not. We will see how it goes for Doug.

Meh. When you show such disdain for the generations who created this whole thing, maybe expect some blow back.
Expressing unpopular opinions is important in any subject for their to be growth and critical thinking about that subject. I don't think he should have felt entitled to an award nod. Though I also don't think just because he bashed on certain people and aspects of the game that that means he should be denied a nod on that basis.

I really liked Doug because he mixed humor with his sometimes brash opinions on matters. I think he did a great service to the poker community. I think he was right for calling out DNegs, I think he was right about how the game has changed, and I think he's right that math and solvers not only ruined the game for him, but are going to ruin it in general. (The only saving grace there is that at the lower professional levels of live poker like 2/5 and 5/10, there will always be people that have no clue.)

He wasn't always right. But I respect anyone that is willing to just put these sorts of opinions out there and challenge common notions.

Actually I like playing against mathers. Once you see what they are up to their game is pretty transparent. Then it’s just a matter of manipulating odds with your bets, and they go on tilt especially hard when “you shouldn’t have called that” and beat them with some donk off suit shit. I get most of my entertainment at the table from those guys who have “solved the math“.
Same at blackjack, I’m the guy who won’t hit 14 just cause the dealer has a ten showing, and I’ll split 20 if the dealer has a six and the five count is ok.

A buddy of mine has a good saying: you have to make friends before you need them.

In short, by operating as a lone-gunman, yes, Polk was able to provide his frank and brutal opinion on any topic (and person for that matter). However, he burned so many bridges in that process that he ended up as an island within the poker community.

Yes, playing politics in any business sucks, especially entertainment. But if you refuse to play the game at all, you'll just end up on the sidelines. And that's exactly where Polk put himself.

PS: FWIW I like Doug as well, and always enjoyed his videos. But there's no way he could have expected to go on attacking so many things/people within poker for so long without becoming a pariah.

It has been a week. A L O N G, horrible week since I stopped playing cards.

I missed bridge last week. I should have played today, but I didn't. I missed out on the phat, phat one Dollar prize pool twice.

I cancelled my home game last Saturday. My wife was going to make beef stroganoff for dinner. I might have won $100 on a good night playing $20 buy-in no limit hold'em.

I closed down Tuesday Night Mixed games day before yesterday. OK, it's limit poker with a $20 max buy in. And only three hours. But those hours would have been so, so sweet. Instead I watched most of six hours of Curling Night in America (reruns)

Doug Polk can make light of it, but for some of us it isn't a grind. It is a glorious time, sitting at the table hoping to score a rather tiny reward. Cards with my buddies. Making the old ladies at bridge groan as I take their dollar. Yummy dinners made by my wife.

Oh . . . . And let's not forget my chips. Three months+ worth of sets, all now sitting idle waiting for the plague to end in hopes that we somehow survive.

*** Shudder *** I don't think I could take six months of deprivation -=- DrStrange

I think he was right for calling out DNegs,
On that rake thing, sure. That was an issue that should have been called out and discussed. But the problem was that Doug hated Daniel long before that. No idea why - I suspect it was just because Daniel was so beloved, so some kind of jealousy? And so instead of discussing the issue like a classy intelligent person, he took it as an opportunity to troll, stalk, and practically bully daniel, showing us what kind of twit he actually is.

Yeah, the "more rake is better" thing was strange. It was really funny at first, and then the longer it went on, it just got... creepy.

I have the same issue with Doug. I really enjoy his analysis and poker knowledge but so much of his content was clickbait, troll bullshit.

He would rather attack someone/something for clicks than engage in civil debate which is why I avoided his content for so long

I think Doug might be a tad less mentally healthy than average, and it creeeps out from time to time. It's interesting that he's now saying he quit poker because he's just sick of it. Around the he punted out of last years Main, he was a little more forthcoming, saying he wasn't playing any more becuase it gave him anxiety. I'm not making fun of that or of any mental illness, I'm just suggesting that it might not be as clean and simple as he's saying.

A big part is the SNE thing...P* treated high volume online pros pretty terribly at that point, some pros left their sponsorship on principle, and some like Daniel didnt. The corporate BS he was spewing to defend them started before “more rake is better” but that’s such a easy position to attack

There was that story about the high roller game he tried to get into at the casino. When he showed up with his cash, it was just Rick Salomon and another guy playing heads up. He asked in and they told him to piss off. He tried to force his way in, since it was technically an open game at a casino. That's not a normal thing to do.
