After around 40 stores and four hours of searching, one North Carolina man finally struck gold.

Kevin Clark, of Candler, North Carolina, played a hunch and went on a journey to find the last top prize of the $5,000,000 Mega Cash scratch-off game.

"I had a real good feeling it was going to be in the western part of the state," Clark said, according to the NC Education Lottery.

Clark spent four hours going store to store, buying every single $20 Mega Cash ticket, until he finally found the winner at a Stop N Go on U.S. 70 in Swannanoa, North Carolina.

"I scanned it with my phone and it told me to go see a retailer," he said. "So, I scratched it off, and when I scratched it off I couldn't believe it. I started shaking. And then I cried."

Clark claimed the prize on Monday, opting to take the lump sum of $3 million rather than the $5 million as an annuity of $250,000 a year for 20 years.

After taxes, Clark went home with about $2.1 million -- not bad for four hours of work.

"I'm a simple man and I mow grass," Clark said. "But I've always been interested in real estate, so my biggest plans with the majority of the money is to invest in real estate and some small businesses."

In North Carolina, the money from selling scratch-off tickets goes to fund education in the state. Over the last year, the NC Education Lottery reported the most money ever raised, $729.8 million -- which funds things like repairs on schools, college scholarships and support for the free NC Pre-K.

How much money is this dude making mowing grass that he can afford to clean out FORTY stores of their entire stock of this $20 ticket???? I'm in the wrong line of work!

I saw this same story. You'd be surprised at what lawn mowing can make. I know a couple of guys that's all they do and they make enough money during the mowing season to not have to work in the winter and they both live in very nice homes and live very well.

I want to make sense of this "real good feeling"

There were 6,840,000 tickets made, and 3 5-million prizes in total. The game launched on 5/2/2017 and ends 9/18/2020. What would make him go purchase these now?

Was his "west NC" hunch based on the previous winner locations???
One grand prize winner was in Durham in 2018 (red dot)
Second grand prize winner was in Wilmington in 2019 (orange dot)

The stated overall odds of winning anything on launch day was 1 in 2.99. Given the adjusted remaining prizes, is there a way to estimate remaining tickets? There are 50 tickets on a roll. If there were a break even remaining number of tickets, with the given prizes remaining on the site, he'd take action when there are about 402,000 left. This means he'd visit at least 8000 locations and potentially spend 8 million dollars. Is there a way to get the count of unsold lotto tickets???

In conclusion, he is a lucky guy with lucky feelings.

To be fair, Idaho allows the prizes and remaining tickets to be know. We currently have one at 5 bucks each, 99.70% sold, and a 50k cash prize. If the 5 mil was at those levels, you can know risk vs reward a bit. Still a bit of madness, but madness is what makes people money sometimes....

Colonel Sanders also got in a gun fight with the rival gas station owner (who started the fight) in town and won. If you can’t beat the competition, take em out!

ALL SKILL!!!

It’s like counting cards in blackjack...it doesn’t guarantee a win, but you get your money in when the +EV is higher. Still, quite a gamble.
The stated odds of winning (at 1 in 2.99) likely includes “break even” tickets. Not really a win.

Maybe he has one of these.

Silly me, I wasted my time at the great breweries in the area.
