During some of my all too regular browsing of epic casino chip sets here on PCF I got to thinking about who designed them and which potentially awesome chips didn't make the final cut.

Do they work for the casino's marketing firm? Are they independent graphic designers? Is there such thing as a professional chip designer who works with casinos on the regular? Does anyone have any information regarding who designs Paulson casino poker chips? Does anyone know if GPI has a master designer who works with and advises the casinos on their chips?

I would love to get an insight into their design process!

Pretty sure GPI has a few in-house designers. I saw a listing on eBay for a casino chip sample with info about the designer all encased in acrylic plastic.
Basically, AFAIC a designer is a designer. We have some pretty good ones here that IMO are equally as good at their trade than the professionals working for the chip companies. I wouldn't doubt that a certain individual has even done work for GPI. It wouldn't surprise me one bit. He's very well reputed.

The Custom Chip Hall of Fame has the designers listed for some. I'll try to get the others updated and keep doing it as we continue to add sets to it. It is basically becoming a custom chip set database.

@Okku's Mapes YouTube video popped up in my recommendations so watched it again. This got me to thinking, who designed their chips? Curious as to how they ended up with their "non-traditional" colors.

@Okku ( or anyone) Would TRK present casino's with designs or did someone from the Mapes side come up with it? Anyone know?

TBH I'm not 100% sure. I know most casinos now a days have a graphic designer that does most of that work. I know that GPI themselves probably has someone on their end that works on the colors, inlay design etc.

Back in the day, I believe the owner had a large part of what went onto the chips, how they were designed and so on. Things were much different back then, most people don't follow the norm and that's why, the Mapes for example, used a Yellow $1, Orange $5, Cyan $25 and Black $100. Very very different from many casinos, but if that's what they wanted then that's what they used. The same goes for why they had a Brown $5... like why? I'm not sure.

Lots of different questions from years ago that we're still trying to figure out everyday.

I've always assumed that Paulson and GPI have had designers who of did most/all the work. Like, look at the Deadwood chips - there are a whole punch of little casinos with chips that were almost certainly all designed by the same person, right?
I dunno. But I love 1980s / early 90s Paulsons!
