Hey all,

I'm thinking about starting a casino dice collection. If anyone has any experience with this, I'd love to chat.

Tim

I only have 2 sets of dice I kind of just came into. Ordered a chip through eBay from someone in Vegas and they sent a pair of dice from Gold Coast Casino. Another set I have is from Resorts in Atlantic City that I got because a relative has a box full of them

Yeah, I'm seeing lots of options on eBay. I hate to spend $4-$5/pair + $3-$4 shipping for each pair though. I wonder if said relative is ready to get rid of that box?

Yeah, that'd probably not be the best way to start a collection. LOL!

I usually try to get dice to go with my casino sets, just to spice the set up, along with ashtray , matches, cards, token, dealer button if possible

Be sure to also hit up the folks over at The Chip Board if you haven't already. There's a number of dice collectors there.

Are you looking for matching serial numbers? Are you just looking to get started? How picky on the dice are?

I don't really have a direction yet. I don't want anything with significant cancellation effects or anything super faded. I guess I'm needing some guidance too.

Most dice cancellations are subtle, such as a non-foiled ring impressed upon one of the faces. It's not like cancelled chips or cards. There are definitely drilled dice out there, but most of the collected dice I see aren't drilled.

Do casinos in Vegas sell their old dice in their gift shops? I called Harrahs and they told me to check with Walgreens...?

I've gotten a handful from casino gift shops, but they are all drilled.

I've also found (cancelled) dice and paper cards from Vegas casinos at my local Dollar Tree. That's an outlier though, as I never saw this in the previous cities I've lived in.

Yes but I haven't done anything with them other than throw them in a bag. I usually try to grab a set from every casino I visit. Probably more a hoarding issue than collecting though. ;)

Yea, that's probably what will happen. I don't know. I just love gambling devices.

I have a full sleeve of never used minty Dunes dice with matching numbers never cancelled. I may try to find a few other sleeves from other casinos if I can find them in uncancelled condition.

Here's all the different dice I have. 10 pair. Would make good starter set. :)

Started with a pair of cancelled Sahara dice because that is where I first learned to play craps. Plus I wanted a pair so I could play craps at home.

You can see a cancellation mark on the Harrahs Tahoe dice which I got free when I signed up for a players card. If you look hard enough mint uncancelled sticks are around. The Grand Biloxi was a mint stick but unfortunately I guess my son was playing with my dice and one is missing along with one of the Harrahs Las Vegas dice.

I eventually built my own craps table and came across 5 mint sticks of Sun Cruz dice to use with it.

Personally since many dice can be picked up in gift shops, I wouldn't pay more than $5 a pair unless you plan to seriously get into it. A premium is put on matching pairs, then matching sticks, rare pairs can easily run in the hundreds of dollars. But even my stick of 40+ year old Riversides cost me $5. You just have to get lucky on eBay.

Here is something cool I just learned. For security purposes casino dice may have a glow spot which will glow under UV light. Sure enough the 1 spot on my Grand Biloxi dice and the center spot on the 5 face of my Sahara dice is a glow spot. My other dice don't have it.

Oh yes, one of the first things I do when I get any new chips or dice is throw the old UV bulb on them and see what glows. Some higher dollar Paulsons also have something that will illuminate when the right kind of laser hits it. I've tried a number of different lasers and not found one with the right wavelength yet.

I have gotten a few different set of dice from different Vegas casinos in their gift shops. I don't have a large collection, but probably like 3 or 4 different casinos. They sell them in the little gift shops where you can buy the used deck of cards. I am not too interested in collecting them, but I like to pick them up as a little souvenir when I visit Vegas. I think they were selling them for $3 for a pair.
