Doctor Who: Jodie Whittaker to be 13th Doctor – and first woman in role...

Not sure how I feel about the gender change but willing to give her a shot. I was hoping for Hayley Atwell (dreamy) to get the first shot at a female Doctor though.

Ever new Doctor brings totally new character traits which is part of the beauty of the show. I'm really going to miss Capaldi, he was a great Doctor even if he got some pretty weak stories in his first couple of seasons.

Not thrilled, but not because she's a woman. I've been watching since Pertwee (#3) and the best Doctors have been the dark ones that acknowledge (with weighty guilt) the blood on his hands from his past incarnations. Smith was fantastic and became my favorite, after I was very skeptical at the start. Tenant was solid. Loved Peter Davidson as well.

Capaldi reminded me of a cross between #2 (Troughton), #3 (Perwee), and #6 (Colin Baker) - basically a grumpy old uncle roaming time and space and occasionally, begrudgingly, fixing things. The guilt of his past and the childlike pleasure of the unknown was subdued under Capaldi - and sometimes gone altogether.

I've watched enough of Whittaker to know that, unlike Capaldi, I'll at least be able to understand her. I'm hoping she can bring more gravitas to the role than Capaldi ever did (though a part of me wonders whether he was hamstrung by the writing as Baker was as #6).

I love it, time to shake things up. I grew up with Baker and have liked all the new ones but I have found it takes a little time to warm up to each. I just wish Pearl Mackie wasn't leaving. She's been one of the best companions.

Capaldi is my least favorite doctor. The writing has been terrible since Davies left, and I hear a new showrunner starts with the new doctor, so let's hope the writing picks up.

Pearl Mackie is my 2.nd least favorite companion. I'll be glad to see her gone too.

I like Matt Lukas in general, but the writing has not allowed him to shine on this show. I'm hoping if he stays the writing for his character gets better.

I believe Lukas was intending to leave as well.

I liked Capaldi, but the show was losing a little luster. He didn't have enough cranky or enough child-like excitement that I connect with the doctor.

I'll reserve judgement on Whittaker. I don't know her, so I am unbiased there. I suspected the next Doctor would be female, with the Master/Missy change paving the way - I just didn't think the change would be this year. With seasons getting shorter and shorter, and lack-luster writing lately, I feel as if we never got the chance for Capaldi to really develop.

As for Pearl Mackie, I liked her as well, but I felt as if they treated her like she had been traveling with the doctor for years.

Finally... Capaldi had the lowest ratings since Paul McGann. McGanns numbers were so low it led the the series being cancelled (until 2005). Hopefully the change to a female Doctor isn't a shove all-in with a marginal hand moment.

Interesting "top 10" of the Dr's. Don't agree with the rankings, but still a good recap of the actors and their impact.

I think its a good thing that women are making their way into more leading roles. We need gender equality and equal pay NOW. We need more political correctness!

PS. In all seriousness, who cares if the lead is man or a woman. If the story line sucks, no actor or actress can save it. More/better original content is what matters, not gender, which appears to be the flavor of the day for the fake news outlets lately.

Update: Deleted spoiler in the spirit of world peace and kumbaya.

So, you obviously are a white male. Anybody else - in particular people who's fathers were no allowed to eat at lunch counters or who's mothers had to give up their seats on a bus for white men would not find your comment even remotely funny.

Paul McGann was only a tv movie in the USA after the original series was cancelled. He never had a series.http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116118/

You are correct. I was mis-counting. The series tanked during the Sylvester McCoy years. I don't blame McCoy though - It could have been that the world was looking for better sfx from their sci-fi.

I am hoping the new doctor and new showrunner will lead to a saving of the show. Moffat was bad for the show. Went immediately downhill from the start of his tenure.

I think Tom Baker is my 3rd favorite doctor. But Eccleston is my 4th and it's very close.

Tennant and Smith are actually my favorites.

+1 for Jon Pertwee as the best Doctor ever. Also grew up watching Worzel Gummidge, have a few beers and You tube it !! you wont regret it.

A female Doctor Who? are we in 2017 wondering if thats a good or bad thing?

I personally don't care who plays the Doctor, just so long as they do a good job.

EDIT: Just saw a reference to Tom Baker,... damnit.. maybe he was my favorite!

I watched this after making my declaration above. Seems I agree with the 4 of the top 5 that I have seen, but they got 2 and 3 backwards. Surprised to have such strong agreement.

Been meaning to get around to Doctor Who for a couple years now but still haven't made the time to watch. I did enjoy Torchwood though.

Tom baker was my favorite until the series reboot, then it was hands down Christopher Eccleston as my favorite. Each successive doctor was then my new favorite after a mourning period where I hated the change. As usual though I seem to be in the minority, I liked Capaldi. Matt Smith I think is my favorite of all. Not sure what to think of having a female Doctor, but I'm open to it. I agree that Hayley Atwell would have been easier on the eyes though.

1) Smith
2) Davidson
3) Tennant
4) T. Baker
5) Eccleston

Least favorite were McCoy and Colin Baker.

FWIW Pertwee and Troughton are tied for 6th.

EDIT: you couldn't split the difference in my list between Baker and Tenant by a human hair. Ask me in 5 minutes and I'll flip them.

More like Nurse Who! Everybody knows women can't be Doctors, that's just science!

In all seriousness, I feel like it's an effort to pander to the current culture of today by introducing a female Doctor (after the success of Missy, who was brilliant). But I'll give her a chance.

I think everytime a doctor goes you've developed an attachment to them and it takes a bit to acclimate to the new one. Baker is hands-down my favorite of all time, but I also grew up watching him. Just so fucking quirky, jelly baby?

Could anyone from the US understand Capaldi in season 8? I sure as fuck couldn't.

I speak/understand all normal English dialects, including Midwestern, Southern, New Yorker, Canadian, Aussie, South African, Scottish and proper British (except for Cockney). I do not understand US New Englander (or as they would call it New Englandaaaaa).

By the way for Doctor Who fans and concerning the new casting the creative force behind the original show was in fact a women, legendary producer Verity Lambert. At the time she was BBC Television's youngest and sole female drama producer. In 2013 for the anniversary they made a really good tv movie about the origin of the show that I recommend. An Adventure in Space and Time.
