I was just wondering if any of the players here kept track of their win rate, and if so, which method do you use? Do you use

-Big Bets/Hour (BB x 2/hours of play)
-Big Bets/100 Hands (BB x 2/100 hands)
-BB/Hour
-BB/100 Hands

The top two (as I'm sure you know) are used primarily for limit games, so I use the BB/100 hands formula.

When I finally did check my win rate over the last six months, I was very pleasantly surprised to find out that my average win rate was 7.2!

I know that this may be a small sample size, but I was happy nonetheless.

I'd love to hear what others have to say on the subject.

I use an app on my iphone called "Poker Income." I mainly use the $/hr winrate, but I really only play .25/.50 and .50/.50 home cash games... so I don't need to correlate between different game levels. This app lists Big Bet per hour, but doesn't clearly define the big bet as 2x the big blind.

I have never calculated win rate, poker is a social event for me. I count my money at the beginning of the night and then count it at the end, if I have more money at the end it was a good night. I do keep track of my nightly profit/losses just so I can see how I did at the end of the year.

I have a spread sheet that I have a $IN and $OUT column were the game was and Date, it also has how many players and time In time Out.
This calculates $ per hour, then I use other sheets to separate the places I play to show if I am winning or loosing at any particular place and how much I am down or up.

I use Poker Income Pro (app on my iPhone). It's essentially for this very purpose. ^^^

However, I have my common poker venues pre-programmed into the app, and the corresponding stakes. I simply start a game (enter the buyin), and when I cash out, I end the game and enter the cash out amount. Not only does it track my profit/loss for the year, it also tracks how I've done at each venue, and my hourly profit, and any host of other statistics. Kinda neeto, and very easy to use.

Yep, same one I use... Great ~$5 app... worth every penny.

Thats me. I have a mason jar and keep the bankroll separate. I'm up a few hundred this year but really don't care about the bottom line too much. After reading this post I'm sure p5woody is a guy I'd like playing with.

The app just allows me to not have to count whats in the jar.

Really though seeing your win rate can be a real eye opener. It allows you to identify that there may be a leak in your game. Case in point, chipjoker above has a high winrate at my game and is approx. breakeven at his game. The games are at the same blind levels, but the cast of characters are different. I have approx. the same winrate at both games. This has allowed cj to step back and say "what's the problem at" his own game. Is it because he's the host... is it because the dynamic of opponents is different and he should alter his play... its just knowledge.

And above all things, it's easy to use. I can enter it right after I cash, or buyin. I don't have to try to remember all that jazz later, with the potential of forgetting which game I won this, and which game I won that (or lost)... Like Shaggy said, it's better than counting pennies in a jar, and I'd say I'm a pretty casual player (I play for fun, but tracking things is nice too).

There's also the benefit of making sure you're not a total degen and about to lose your house/marraige. Some people gambol too much, and hide behind just not knowing how much they've lost. An app like this will be eye opening for some. I use it primarily to see whether I'm up or not (to track my BR).

I don't really track anything by hand but I do use an excel sheet. I record the date, game type, buyin amount, and cash out.

It's just a nice way to easily see my overall win/losses for the month/years.

I've got an Excel Spreadsheet where I track date/day, time started, time ended, stakes & game played, money in and money out. I probably should incorporate tips (dealer and waitress) into the mix so I get my actual win-rate in the game.

I track based on $ won per hour, because my hourly rate is what I care about. Now that I'm 15 minutes from a casino with a 50-table poker room I'm a much happier camper. Playing tonight and tomorrow night. I'd play more frequently, but you know, work and stuff. :(

If I measured my win rate I'd have to track two different games. Drunken Poker and Sober Poker.

Tonight is sober poker, hopefully I'll do better than my last two sessions (drunken poker)

I used to keep track on Poker Income - had almost two years of data that got lost when I updated the OS on my iPhone. Now I just keep track of my poker bankroll and keep it totally separate from my life roll. I am content as long as it keeps growing and I have enough to play with.

I also seem to be winning more since I stopped keeping close track. I think I used to keep playing longer when I was losing to try and prevent having a losing session in my stats. The end result was losing more. Now I simply stop or change tables if I am losing to prevent a bigger loss.

I had to quit keeping track - if I had two or more losing sessions in a row I found myself pressing WAY TOO HARD to get winner and it ended up exacerbating the downward spiral. My bankroll has slowly grown since I stopped keeping track, but I keep it separate from the family money in a bank account.

I stopped tracking my results for the same reason: It affected my play, and not in a good way. I focused way too much on results and not enough on making good decisions. Also, it's very difficult to remain in my fantasy world while facing reality on a spreadsheet. ;)

I typically go to a casino/game with a set number of Buyins, and whenthat runs out, I'm done. I don't think too much about my stats or BR while I'm playing, I just think about the pokerz I'm playin.

I do like to know whether I'm particularly profitable while playing a certain game/cast of character, so the stats help me choose which games to play. Knowing which style of poker im playing against certain crowds helps me learn which playing style works well for me. For instance, I sometimes play against wild lags, who are skilled and crafty. And sometimes I play at a geriatric clinic waiting room (local casino). The games play differently (and so do I).

If you don't track somehow, you don't know how you are doing. And once you don't know, you can make up what ever you want to believe.

In truth, a carefully separated poker wallet would be enough to know good? bad? break-even? If you want to know more than that, you need some form of records.
