Damn.

Those spreads sound great.

From my experience, all my guests arrive at 6pm and eat. Game starts around 6:30-6:45. Usually goes until 2-3am. We graze on the food as the night goes on.

I literally can't imagine a game without food.

That's what I'm going for. It just doesn't work out that way.

I am really surprised with these results. I'd expect the poll to be completely reversed.

I always put a nice spread out for my home games, and the rare instance of a home game at another player's house, they do the same. Solid spread with a fully stocked bar.

I see I'm in the very small minority in this.

Ditto…but no one expects it and I don’t expect payment. Hosting is awesome and I don’t want anyone to try and steal my venue unless they are ready to boil crawfish, shuck oysters, and higher a masseuse. That’s the price I pay.

Side note….dudes were even trying to shove money in my pocket “for the chips” at my last game.

I was just trying to figure out how many people prefer a real meal before or during a poker game,

I don’t like to eat large before I play. I think it makes me slow and lethargic. I snack some during play, but I’d rather have the edge of hunger keeping me alert. Pretzels or individual snacks are what I prefer while playing, nothing that I need a fork or knife for. But that’s me, I don’t live just for the next meal.

When I host (ugh it's been months) it was always a large variety of snacks. No qualms with people ordering, but either way, I make it very clear what the expectation is and to plan accordingly. I also have a shit stomach so I usually abstain from eating what the majority would want in terms of main food (pizza/hot dogs), especially when mixed with booze, unless I want to cut my poker night short. I'll never derail a food plan though; it's not about me.

Usually order pizza as a group if enough people are hungry. If the game starts after dinner hours most people eat in advance or bring a sammy. I always have beverages and snacks in the room. Been looking into a hot dog roller.

I guess if it starts earlier than 6, I kind of expect there to be food. Not in a "hey you're supposed to feed me, where's the food" kind of expect, but moreso I just figure most people would if it goes across dinner time.

This is my cue and why my weeknight games start at 6:30. Everyone can feed themselves and come over after. Now I do put out snacks, but I make sure everyone feels free to bring what they like.

Full meal? No, we don't expect that. Bring your own food if you're that hungry. We do expect drinks and snacks, but this is on everyone to chip in for.

I do tell the crew what I have provided for drinks ahead of time and anything on top of that they want, they will need to bring.

I will have some snacks on hand but expect them to chip in with some snacks as well. Cheetos will be sent home. Some days I have more free time and will cook something or just order something for the event. They can chip in if they want but the group is generally pretty good about chipping in if they eat.

The answer for me is - it depends. I play in one regular game where we start at 4-5 pm and break for dinner around 6 pm. I expect to eat at that game. Other games I play in start at 8-9 pm so I typically eat with the wife before those games. When I host we typically start around 3-4 pm and we break for dinner around 6 pm. we all decide on a place and I send a door dash link to everyone so everyone can order what they want. works well and everyone is happy.

After reading everyone's scenarios I have to change my answer to "depends" also
I host a 3 table league every Thursday night, no way I am providing food every week for 28 people, and no one expects it.
When I host a weekend tourney every month or two, then yes, I usually provide food and others bring something to share. Most people expect more food at those events.
I play in a different league that plays once a month, charges for food and provides a full blown meal with sides and deserts. Myself, and everyone else who plays in that game, expects and plans for food.

When I go out to play, I’m there to focus on the game, not on eating. Some drinks or snacks in a long session, sure. But I’ll have any meal I need before or after the gang.

When I host, I don’t want anything near the chips or table that is messy. People can bring what they want and eat while playing, but I prefer that all food be well off the felt, and that if it is greasy they keep their hands clean or ideally just sit out while chowing down. I provide basic snacks and drinks.

At my home games, I send email, texts, etc. To announce the game date and time. Typically the games are Fri. or Sat evening, from 7-11:30p. 90% of my regulars are retired.
I offer snacks and drinks on the house, but we don't take a break in our cash games to eat.
It's grab and go. The table has under table snack trays, so no food bowls on the table proper. Guys will also bring snacks and drinks of their liking as well.
Whenever we do a longer session, we do have a sit down meal prior to starting the poker game, then snacks/drinks are the only things allowed at the table.
When I go play at other peoples games, I don't expect food to be served but the hosts always have snacks and drinks available, but most bring their own as well.

I played for a while with a group of IT guys that had a once a month rotating game. The expectation was that you would serve a full meal, cooked or catered, and then three 45 min tournaments - chip leader at the end of time was the winner Yeah, lots of all ins from the ines that couldn’t possibly win, usually propelling some underdog to the win at the last hand.

Anyway it wasn’t bad, you only had to host once every 6-8 months. Great exposure to a variety of cooking and service.

Imagine OMC waiting for a premium hand in a 45 minute tournament. 6 of them. They couldn’t understand pot odds, would bet 100 into a 5000 pot and marvel and moan when I raised it to 3500. I’d usually tear them up in two tournaments and flame out to coolers in one. There was an hour of cash, nickel dime quarter afterwards to wrap it up. The group definitely played different after my influence, lol.

Our Friday night poker game starts at 7pm so most guys ate a meal prior. Typically the host provides food & beverages and we drag a buck until the host is satisfied (usually about $30). Food like pizza, hot dogs or hamburger bbq are the norm

I think if you want people to drive to your place and play the games you want to play you can at least offer a variety of 2 or 3 drinks.

Yeah I was gonna comment on the rake thing too. I don’t normally eat while at a home game or a casino. So if pots are getting raked to pay for food that I didn’t want, I’m annoyed.
What do free soft drinks and hot dogs cost the host? $20? Usually I’ll get something close to that back in tips, which is nice but not really necessary. I don’t want people to starve, but I don’t want to get into full blown meals. Hot dog rollers are a gift from the heavens!

To the original question, I don't go to another game expecting a meal, unless the host announces there is food. I think "depends" also plays a large role, especially based on time of the game and duration. But if I know it's a long night/early morning game and there's no food, I will bring my own snacks because I know I'll eventually get hungry after midnight or so.

As for me, I host a Saturday afternoon non-raked game, which typically goes 7-9 hours, so folk coming to my game know they will be fed. They're aware in advance via texts on what the meal for the game is, and the food, non-alcoholic drinks, snacks are always on me (BYOB). I incorporate a 30-minute lunch break away from my degen room, which has a strict no eating policy, and folks eat in my dining room and living room. After the meal, I remind folks about washing their hands before they even think of returning to the table.

Rotating games do change the entire situation. Also, frequency.

As I mentioned previously, I host twice weekly.

I like to host, and I think to a degree is what came first, poker or food.

We added cards to our family barbecues, and then it became about the cards, but a little barbecue or pizza, or burgers is still expected. Where if you started out playing cards, adding in pretzels and chips is already quite the upgrade.
