Ditching Paulsons for CPC Customs?? (2 Viewers)

What should I do?

  • Ditch Paulson sets, get more CPC chips

  • Keep Paulson sets, screw CPC chips

It’s not just non-chippers. Although there are a few custom sets I love, and a bunch more that I appreciate, it all just feels very gimmicky. Match them with a dealer button and some custom bunch chips and all-in plaques, all on a matching custom cloth, and it just feels like play time.

And I don’t mean to rain on anybody’s parade - you do you. I’m just saying it’s another thing to consider. Are you getting customs to keep up with the Jones’s here on PCF, or will it actually make you happy to theme out your poker room like a theme park?
I like my Gimmicks, mister! :)

Been thinking about it for a while now and am in a bit of a weird spot. I know @Eloe2000 recently went to only customs and he seems to be loving it. My crew is primarily tournament people and my cash sets sitting.

I guess what I’m debating is dropping my paulsons to go full customs.

Love to hear what you guys think as I feel I’m not the only one who has been thinking this recently.

I did exactly that recently. Paulson prices were/are insane so I parted with my beloved AS hotstamps. Replaced them with a CPC add-on and new set and even have a few hundred bux left over.

The only non-custom set I'm keeping are my Abbiati Park Place chips which are too beautiful to part with.

I vote:

Mill a set of CPC/ASM, and custom label

Get a beater Paulson set

Get a tournament paulson

Design a CPC cash set

Put a solids set together

Then a mixed set

Then stalk the classifieds and dibs a few random sample sets

I didn’t see that this was ever resolved. Was it?

in any case as several others have said it depends on which Paulson. I had a late 90s full leaded that I regret letting go to this day. Don’t be haunted like me. Take your time and save for a CPC set.

Stumbled across this thread and found it an interesting read. I will divulge a secret ….I’ve been a member here since 2016 and only have custom chips (not counting a set of Scrolls for traveling). I have a cash and tourney set of ASMs I bought in 2002 and a large 1200 chip cash set of BR PRO ceramics I finally ordered last fall.

I joined here because I assumed 90% of the content would be about custom ASM/CPC chips. I honestly had no clue at that time anyone would be interested in spending that kind of money on chips they didn’t design.

All these years later, I still frequent here for general poker conversations and to look at custom chip pics. And all these years later I still have no interest in anything but custom chips. I’ve never got tired of my ASMs even though they only have the single color 321 patern edge spots that were available then. Went with ceramics for the different size options (43s) and easy of cleaning. I may eventually get another CPC set for cash only.

So I would vote going completely custom and designing everything you want. If you take your time designing you won’t ever get tired of them.

All that said…Paulson Noirs are probably the only chip I would have spent custom money on. They have a non descript label and are beautiful.

I'm here for the customs too. Even when we could get the Paulsons through the group buys/apache years ago they didn't appeal to me because they weren't my own customs (although I briefly entertained hotstamps at one time). I do like the Le Cove set, but not as much as my own custom ASMs and CPCs, and there's no way I'd pay market value for them.

Relabeling / overlabeling Paulsons can be marvelous too (since most casino labels are ridiculous and NAGB labels are boring) , but prices have gotten obscene.
Though late to the game, I still had the chance to improve these chips:

I couldn't have done this today financially, three years later.
