Just bought a remote start for my truck. Been wanting to do it 2 winters ago. Picked up a plug and play (with T harness) system by Fortin. There are two wires that they need to be cut, but I will just remove the wire/pin from the connector and tape it off instead. The seller is flashing it for my vehicle so I don't need to buy the Fortin Flash updater only to use it once.

He has a better price than Amazon and Crutchfield.

I've had remote start on a few vehicles, absolutely loved having it. The first time I had one I was shocked at how much my gas mileage suffered during the first winter, but coming out to a steaming hot truck when everybody else has ice encrusted vehicles makes it all worth it. :)

I used to love mine too, I gladly traded gas for heat. Since I live in the snow belt it was critical on days where the whole damn car was iced over. When I got my new car I never put one in it. Since I now work from home I haven't been too motivated to buy another one.

Yeah, I have garage spots now so no need, but if I ever don't have one again I'll reinstall a remote start. My problem with anything other than a truck is that I purposely buy manual transmission cars and remote starts are a no go with manuals.

I had one for my Pontiac G6 a few years back and it was fantastic during the winter. But the best cure for ice on your windshields is to move to FL :D

I actually moved to Vegas for a few years, had to move back to NY when the wife got pregnant. We both already agreed that when the kids are all in school full time that we are moving back to Vegas. Its so much cheaper to live and the weather is not even a comparison. We just had our 2nd 5 weeks ago. Hopefully no 3rd, that way we can move back in 5 years.

Here is the unit I have to install. Plug and play at the ignition switch, then I just have to tap 6 wires which is easy with these.

So I got my remote start installed (sort of) the other day. I was able to ditch my OEM Key FOB and use the new 2 way FOB which is good.
The vehicle will start but then shuts off after 3 secs. The key bypass and the immobilizer bypass are both working via the evo-one unit or the vehicle would not start.

After it shuts off, the parking lights flash 4 times which the manual says it did not detect a tachometer signal. The unit was flashed for my vehicle with the tachless option enable. It either was not programmed correctly or I accidentally reset it. I ended up just buying the $50 flash tool and will re-flash it with the correct settings. Hopefully that is all I have to do to get it working.

Total investment is about $265 now which is much less than having it installed.

I plan on adding remote start to my wife's car too so I can use the flash tool again. If anyone wants a remote start, get a Fortin brand Evo-One or Evo-All. I can flash your program the unit for you.

I just bought a new Ford Escape yesterday -- my first American car since a 1988 Fiero GT. It came with remote start, heated seats, heated side mirrors, etc. -- all the features most in demand in Florida. I have no idea if I'll ever use the remote start, but it's a comfort to know that ignition-triggered bombs are no longer a threat. Sigh...

It amazes us how little marketing is tailored to warmer parts of the US. Even the major chains like Target, Wal Mart, etc. take "summer" goods out of their stores for September through April. They leave a lot of money on the table -- or, more likely, flowing to Amazon.

Does it shut the vehicle off when you unlock it? My wife got a new Sequoia last summer and we had a remote start thrown in with the purchase as we were told most Toyota dealers don't order vehicles with remote starts. (of course I'm thinking WTF! if someone is spending that money on a vehicle I'm pretty sure they want remote start) but this factory RS shuts the vehicle off when you unlock the door with the remote.

we have had GM's and Dodge's with RS and neither one would shut off when you unlock the doors with the remote. Its pretty nice to be able to start it and let the climate inside come to temperature while you load your shit in it.

I know first world problems, but now that I have had remote start it will be hard not to have it. Kind of like AC seats, id rather have those than heated seats..granted both are nice

Nah. It will only shut off if I push the brake before I put the key in the ignition. I have it set to run 20 minutes and one push will unlock all doors. The OEM remote you have to push it twice to do all doors.
