i just saw a listing on eBay for some Noirs and it quoted the bit from Sidepot’s website about the exclusivity of the chips and the mold. And that got me thinking. As I understand it, the Noirs were the only chips ever produced on the Paradise mold, right? And also, as I understand it, a mold is a very expensive thing to produce. So did Sidepot sink the money into creating that mold, with plans of producing different lines of chips on it? And did sudepot choose not to produce any more lines on that mold, or is it possible that they were a victim of GPI’s decision not to produce any more Paulsons for non-casinos? Because if that’s what happened, that would be a screwing, for sure.
Regardless of how or why, I am a little fascinated that this mold has never been used again and almost certainly will never be used again.

Interesting points.

I was considering the same with the fate of the cigar and snifter mold today. Were they able to recoup the mold cost in the amount of chips BCC produced for them? Both of them were popular molds. It's a shame we don't have more chips on them.

Since GPI was the one place to produce those chips on that mold, an intelligent line-item in a contract with them for the mold when it was made would have included a payment from GPI to Sidepot in the event that GPI chose not to make those chips anymore. Assuming the profit from the chips that were made was not enough to pay for the mold that is.

Could there be patents held on the molds?

Not so much with the BCC/Paulson process. It's mostly just making cups (and the inverse mold need to produce the cups).

Far, far less than the $20,000+ required for a typical ASM/CPC setup, which contains internal components used for heating the mold/slugs during pressing.

I'm sure that all initial run chips made by Paulson and/or BCC on 'private molds' (T-mold, MGK, TFP, Paradise, Cigar & Snifter, etc.) were sold at prices that sufficiently covered their production expenditures, including one-time sunk costs.

Not normal -- aka "Utility" -- patents, unless there's something novel about how they're mounted or used.

There is a special, separately-numbered category called "Design Patents" which could be applied to the chip design itself, but not to the equipment used to manufacture them.

Copyright and trademarks could apply.
