Hey there PCF Denizens.

I'm planning on going forward with a Matsui group buy (GB) sometime during the first half of 2019.

I'm posting this thread here in the mockups forum given I'd appreciate design input from fellow chippers. If you think you might want to take part, please don't hesitate to contribute any ideas. However, this is not an "interest" thread. Once the design is complete I'll post one in the GB forum.

Again, we're talking a 2019 GB here.... so no hurry.

I have already been in contact with Matsui and have a lot of information regarding price. Also by Saturday I will be in possession of of a full color kit and will post photos as needed to aid us in our endeavor to create the latest greatest set on PCF.

Premises for the chips:

1) I intend them to be for standard tourney. Denoms: 25, 100, 500, 1000, 5000, 25000.

Thus, no dollar/pound/euro/won/etc signs.

If there is enough demand we can open it up to more denoms like 1, 5, 100,000, etc, but we must be careful to avoid Matsui fees for not making their 500 chip minimum order per denom.

2) I intend to use one of these 3-color or 4-color "inner ring decal value chip" moulds:

Templates.png

These are all in the 40mm or 39/40mm category regarding size. I need to question Matsui directly regarding what "39/40" means (unless someone here already knows... Tommy?)

The denoms WILL NOT be on the inlay itself; instead, just as in the above pics they'll be on the face of the chip surrounding the inlay. This way the inlay is the same on every denom and we only have to pay Matsui's $250 art fee ONCE and thus lower the overall cost for everyone.

Also, note the prices for the moulds. Which one we select for the GB will be one of the very first decisions made. These are Matsui's base per-chip prices and DO NOT include added costs such as:

- shipping of the entire order from Korea,
- Matsui art fees ($250 per different inlay)
- art fees from the inlay/label designer (whom is TBD)
- customs charges
- costs for me to ship the individual lots to GB participants

Nor does it include any volume DISCOUNTS that Matsui can offer once we know the total quantity of chips in the order.

3) Unlike my prior custom chip orders these WILL NOT be "Dragon" themed.

I figure a more generic look and style will make them more appealing in general.

Given the unique look of these chips I'd like the inlay casino/venue to feature something sci-fi'ish or even space-based. This will be something we can tackle in this thread in addition to the mould type. My initial thought for a name was "Galaxy Resort & Casino"; however, I'm pretty sure "Galaxy Casino" already exists as a real establishment in Macau. Given that, Matsui might have issues about inlays using such a name. ;)

4) The inlay will be dark in color. Perhaps a black starfield or galaxy of some type with the venues name.

Once the inlay details are decided, we can talk to one of our PCF inlay artists to mock us up some samples. @P5Woody has done great work for me in the past, but given he's not available I'll talk to others like J5 potentially.

Finally, one issue I have noted with other GB or design threads is sometimes it's not quite clear as to where to find the current design iteration. Thus, as long as I can edit it, the first response below will be updated to show the current version GB mocks.

So, lets' get started.

This sounds like a great idea and I'll be in the market for a tourney set in 2019 so...sweet. Though I'll probably only have interest in the cc320 or cc620 molds, as the others don't have enough base color showing for my liking.

Looking forward to future progressions!

Re: 39/40mm, you can choose which size you get. I was told the 39mm edges would not be beveled, but YMMV. Best to always check with your rep though, even just so you're on the same page.

A long time ago on a forum far, far away... I made these crude mocks. The Eclipse-design isn't mine, but I believe the style was heavily influenced by the TV show Heroes. I added a space theme to the background, but it was deemed too nerdy at the time. :bag:

I like the sound of "The Eclipse" better than Galaxy. Thus, I think we have a front runner for the venue name, thank you! :D

I really like the mocks you attached. Maybe whoever ends up being our artist can develop a new inlay emulating the theme of what you attached.

I need a tourney set. This seems perfect. Time for first group buy participation I think!

Maybe a multi-purpose chip with no denom in lieu of a specific "bounty" chip?

Something like this?

Nothing is out of the question so long as we get sufficient interest. I think the fee from Matsui for not ordering 500+ of a given denom is 30%.

I'm just throwing this out there - for me, the upside to this GB is the potential for a small price break in spreading the art fees over more people and saving money on the additional charge they make for order quantities less than 500 per denom (15% is they're not busy, 30% if they are). Otherwise you may as well place your own order and get exactly what you want. So the best thing is to maximize the number of participants. How do we do that?

- Use the cheapest mold to keep the price as low as possible?
- Would more people buy 39mm vs 43mm?
- Would more people buy a super high roller set vs standard denoms?
- Would more people buy a generic set like the tournament poker vs a fantasy casino?

I think it would be good to get a few mock-ups going of inlay, size, denoms etc and then put it to a vote so see where the majority interest is. Personally, I would prefer something "special" e.g. 43mm & SHR as there are so many normal looking sets out there but I may not be in the majority!

I don't know if Matsiu changed their formula or if its the molds we chose for the WPS Horseshoe chips, but I handled the chips in the pic above and the WPS Horseshoe chips we just got, and they do not exhibit the "barrel explosion" characteristics that the Tournament Poker chips did.

Barrel explosion? As in "losing proper grip on a barrel of slippery chips and they go everywhere"?
More like "impossible to get a grip on a barrel of slippery chips that doesn't result in them exploding out of your hand and going everywhere". But yeah, pretty horrid for actual play.

Glad to hear this -- maybe they changed the plastic formula. What specific molds did you use?

Those CC720-A chips look pretty sweet, and if they've corrected the SCS issue (slippery chip syndrome), I might be interested in tourney chips. Also like the Eclipse art theme.

I have stared at the first two molds, 720 vs 730, for several minutes. What is the difference?!

Very excellent questions, thank you.

Regarding mould type: Well, the early consensus is for the less expensive 620's which have already made for some beautiful sets. As BG mentioned though, the 720's look amazing.
Regarding 39 or 43mm: Though I know there are A LOT of outstanding 43mm chips out there, I just do not prefer them and would rather keep the smaller diam.
Regarding super high roller vs standard denoms: I think we can appease BOTH sides of that aisle by simply adding a 100K denom.
Regarding a generic set versus a faux casino: I'm open to either way but lean toward the latter. The "Eclipse" concept from @mipevi really caught my eye.

The points you make are EXACTLY what this thread is for... hashing out the details so more of us can have a cool new set.

And here I thought everything was bigger in Texas. :whistling:

I like 43mm chips but have plenty, so I'm okay with 40mm chips. I'd have to see/feel the no-bevel 39mm version before making a decision on those, I think.

There is a 50mm chip available as well

How many of those do you have?

I've just contacted Matsui to see if they'll sell me 10-20 promotional chips each for the 620 and 720 moulds. If they do, so we can pass them around as a shared sample for any who are interested.

Following.....also, I’d prefer a NON faux casino for the label. Something that fits the set well, but no names. It seems like it always ends up cheesy.

I can do some some quick and dirty mock-ups. Perhaps people can suggest wording? Here's an example.

Lots of riffs on the WSOP set have been done, and will be done again in the future. How about a take on the WPT (GPT - Global Poker Tour), High Stakes Poker (Low Stakes Poker), or Poker after Dark (Poker after Night)?

I will these up if there is sufficient interest.
