Hey everyone, I’m Justin and just joined. I love playing at the casino and have played twice at home in the past but I’d like to start playing more home games. I’m looking for advice on what quantities of each denomination I should have in my set to make my games run more smoothly and be more fun. Currently I have 100x$1, 100x$5, 100x$25, 100x$100, 50x$500, and 50x$1000. My table only seats 8 and I’ll have a dealer sit in sometimes, so it will be 7-8 people. The most common game I’d say would be a rebuy tournament or a 1/3 cash game but will sometimes do a 2/5, 5/10, or 25/50. At the casino everyone plays stacks and stacks of red at 1/3 and with my set I feel like we would have to constantly be making change and coloring up. Also with tournaments they run fine but the people seem to want a bigger quantity of starting chips to play with. What chips should I add to my set to be able to cover everything from a 1/3 cash game to a 8 man rebuy tournament. Also the chips I like are crazy high and hard to find so I’d like to make it fun and comfortable with the least amount possible but I know what I have now isn’t enough. Thanks for letting me in the group and for any advice!

1/3 cash game but will sometimes do a 2/5,
$1 x 100
$5 x 200 - 300
$25 x 200 - 300
$100 x 100

are enough so you will only need to add on more $5 & $25

rebuy tournament
You can do T5 2k tourney with your set without adding more chip

Starting Stack
$5/$25/$100/$500 10/10/10/2

Rebuy in 4 x $500 or 2 x $1k

I am in the process of building a re-labeled set of Paulsons. In the mean time I purchased a 500 piece rounders set from CPC with the following breakdown: I use this for tournament and cash (25's play as a quarter in cash, $100's play as a dollar and so forth. This is the breakdown I selected.

100 x 25
200 x 100
100 x 500
50 x 1k
50 x 5k

If your looking to go cheaper but have nice colors, consider one of the card's mold group buys. I think pricing was around 50 cents per chip.

I ordered a sample set of the rounders yesterday. I was thinking of selling the 500 chips I have and just replacing them with 1000 pieces of the rounders, cause it’s about even money. But I’m like 75% sure I won’t.

This is what I was thinking, maybe 200 more $5 and 100 more $25. How odd is an 800 piece set? My ocd makes me want to make it 1000. Lol.

And excuse the silly question but what does T5 mean? I see that kind of thing on here often.

Just curious, what is your current set? It must be a decent set, rounders are around 2 bucks a piece I think.

If you were on the fence about the CPC rounders, here are some photos of my set. They were a gateway drug to this hobby for me. My only criticism of these was the color of the higher denominations.

T literally means tournament. Ideally we don’t use cash chips for tournsment play, we use no cash value chips. So if your cash chips are $1, $5, $25 your tournsment chips would be T5, T25, T100. The chips themselves wouldn’t have a T on them - just the number with no currency sign. But in this context, T5 refers to the smallest chip in a tournament set. Your chipset supports a T5 tournament nicely. If you wanted to move up to T25, you’d need more 1,000 chips and some 5,000s.

For an 8-max $1/3 game, I’d probably be looking at two racks of $1s (one and a half would be fine, but it sounds like you might be a full-rack kind of guy). 3-6 racks of $5s, and then as many $25 as you’d need to fill your bank.
And no, 800 is a perfectly normal amount of chips to own. Most of my sets are around that number.

Paulson classics! You are probably undervaluing these. If I had Paulson classics, I don't think I would sell them!!

It is best to separate cash and tourney sets.

If you must use the same chip series, then separate cash and tourney by denom, e.g. fracs through $25 for cash, start tourney with T100 base.

What is the reasoning behind this? I could see if you have multiple games going and people trying to slip some tournament chips in the cash game but I would never have both games going at the same time.

I only mention it for security reasons. You have a better assessments of the risks at your own game.
