Key West chips arrive from Classic Poker Chips

At just before 3 p.m. today, a UPS truck pulled up to deliver the last of six large boxes of Key West Resort & Casino chips from Classic Poker Chips. This completes our order, placed in April, for 10,000 chips.

The first group of boxes arrived last Friday, Aug. 19, and I've had time to go through those and inventory them. They look fantastic! The last box, containing just over 1,600 chips, arrived today.

So as of today, the "Key West Resort & Casino" is fully stocked with all denominations, and standing by to hear from players interested in their own set.

Many thanks to David, David and Jim at Classic for the fine work!

12-chip sample sets return

Since we're fully stocked, the option to buy a full sample set of all 12 denominations of Key West casino chips has been put back on the Key West website.

A peek into the "back office"

Here is a photo of the Key West's retail "chip bank," in my office. Counting denominated Key Wests, roulette chips and $1 blue chips, there are just over 17,000 chips in all. (I note that we don't usually stack more than five boxes on a shelf, but we did for this photo, Usually, anything above the fifth box begins a new stack on the front of the shelf.)

I can't let this thread go without showing the chips! Here are the 12 denominations, and two colors of $1 chips, in a soft-edge photo that actually shows the colors pretty well.

And here are the six roulette colors -- bright roulette colors with J5's Key West reverse inlay:

These can also double as non-denominated solids or as anything you want -- bounty, free drink, etc.

... And some new graphics to jazz up the free online blackjack and slot machine games:

Adding a sign and a bucket above and below the slot machine makes it look more like a slot machine on your screen. For the blackjack game, we added a photo composed of several photos and drawings, including our new dealer, to make it look more like the virtual blackjack games at the casino.

(I keep telling my wife I've never met her.)

Amazing what you can do when you have time to zoom down to the one-pixel level...

How much are these chips each?

For denominated Key West chips:
Retail to the public: $1.79 @
For PCF members ordering by PM here on PCF: $1.69@

Key West also offers blue $1 chips sold and redeemable for $1, so if you'd prefer blue $1s in your chip set, your average price per chip can drop significantly.

For solid roulette chips:
Retail to the public: $1.32
For PCF members ordering by PM here: $1.25 @

For PCF members, if you order 300 chips, you'll also receive two decks of Key West playing cards. Sets of 500 chips = 6 decks free.

How's the color matching between this and past orders?

Excellent. At this point, virtually all of our chips have been produced by Classic Poker Chips. Since they opened in March, 2014, Classic has made more than 20,000 Key West chips for us -- far more than we have in stock right now.

The last color change happened when Classic opened, and brought back the day glow green -- a color that had been discontinued by the former owner of ASM, Las Vegas. (That's a long story in itself.) Since Classic successfully color-matched the Day Glow green, the colors used in all Key West chips has remained very consistent.

With this order, Classic becomes the first incarnation of the company to make all 13 denominated chips and all six roulette chips. Blue $1 chip production began after Classic opened, so blue chips have only been made by Classic.

Samples:

Get them. When you get high end chips, you really want to know what they look and feel like on your own table.

Key West samples are not "separate." When someone asks for sample chips, I take chips out of a box of each denomination of chip. (There's always an odd number of each. If not, we open a new box.)

So the samples you get won't look any different from that rack of 100 chips.

That reminds me:

If you get samples, you can get only the chips you are considering for your set, or all 12. When it comes time to order more, you can order any number you want. You're not stuck ordering 100 chips. Need 116, or 87 or whatever? No problem.

How much are the sample sets?

$1.69 x (number of sample chips you want) + shipping.

Blue $1 chips are only $1 each.

PM your order and I can send an invoice to your Pay Pal e-mail address.

U.S. shipping is usually by Priority Mail small box, as First Class + the box + insurance can cost.more than priority.

Please include your shipping address in the PM so I can quote the right shipping. Big difference in shipping between Pittsburgh and Australia.

Just to add something I think is important here when we talk about these chips, their history, color matching, etc.

The professionals who worked for the Old ASM in Portland were amazing. Their reputation for quality was known here and elsewhere.

Now, the people at Classic Poker Chips, back in Portland again, using the old equipment and molds and formulae, have truly returned to that tradition. My personal set is 2,500 "Old ASM, Portland / Jim B" Key West chips. All the business / retail chips are kept separately, in chip boxes with labels.

If you look at an Old ASM chip from Portland from 10 years ago, and look at a Classic chip made earlier this month, you won't be able to tell which is which.

I certainly can't.

Is the office ever unattended? Jus' askin'.

I'm really diggin the colors here! Is there a minimum requirement for an order? I am wanting to get a full sample set, but also wanting to get 20 roulette chips (10 of one of the blues and 10 of green I think) that I could use for bounty if I ever start running tournaments.

There is no minimum. You can certainly order any number of chips you'd like, from one to any larger number. And we can do the order you are think about above. PM if you want to go with it, and I'll e-mail an invoice to your paypal address and pack the chips for shipment.

I finally have personal checks! Once I get back from my honeymoon in late September I will likely order a couple barrels of $1000 chips and probably some blue $1 chips

Why the redeemable $1 blues?

I've touched on this before but since you asked...

First, I've heard that some people don't like the white $1 chip with yellow 312 spots. I like it, but everyone is entitled to their opinion.

And I've always wanted to create a live chip -- one that could really be cashed for its face value. But the cost of making a Key West chip went over $1 shortly after they were introduced several years ago.

I looked into making real retail gift cards for the Key West site, and learned that retail stores pay more than $1.50 just to create the card. They store the gift card value on the card, and write off the cost to make the card as advertising / marketing / selling expense.

So I decided to do a "live" $1 chip. Blue is the other "classic" $1 color, so that was obvious.

I really do set aside $1 for each $1 blue chip you buy, and will pay you $1 to get it back, provided there are no teeth marks, etc. That dollar goes on the books as a rental deposit. I put your $1 in a high-yield peer-to-peer savings account earning about 8 percent right now. That's not casino dough, where they keep selling that chip all day long and winning it back several times a day, but it's something.

We cut production costs by putting the initial blue $1 chips on a corporate Amex card that paid a bonus for the large purchase. So in about another year, the cost of making the $1 chips will be paid back to the company, and all the interest on those dollars is income.

When / if people start returning them, they'll be available to re-issue for $1. To date, no one has cashed a blue $1 chip.

The benefit to you? You can get a real Classic clay spotted 312 chip for $1, instead of $1.69, $1.79 or $1.80, and this can reduce the overall cost of your set.

So in a way, I guess you could say we don't sell blue $1 chips. We rent them. And if you want to rent it for life, we're collecting the interest on your dollar the whole time, so I'm hoping you love the chip and get to keep it for a long, long time.

You'll notice I did not mention the (obvious) attribute of a $1 cash chip. If I play poker with my friends and decide that the winner keeps the chip, who needs cash?

Mike -- early congratulations on the upcoming wedding. Enjoy your trip. (Where are you going?)

A personal check is fine, too. (No Paypal fees.)

Just PM me whenever you are ready to order, and I'll get those sent out right away.
