Someone jokingly mentioned taking a live sample to another hosts game.

I was wondering if any one has "cancelled " their cash sample sets before shipping or had chips made with "NCV" or something on the inlay.
Sounds crazy but has any one done this?

I respect people like Nex limiting what gets out due to that concern, as well as people who don’t even get any samples made purely to keep they’re chips personal and more limited.

That being said, if this is a concern of yours but you still want to allow samples, I think you’re also fine if you just limit who you offer them to. Reach out to the five or six people who you know would appreciate having a sample of your custom set, and who wouldn’t resell them (so you know where they all are).

Personally, I think those are the only people who should receive samples in the first place!

I cut my sample sets off at the 5 and under. In part because I had limited extras on my higher denoms and in part because sending out an extra 125 in checks that I percieve as live for a dollar a piece seems like a bad deal if I were ever to host a meetup.

My tourney set will have ten samples, maybe more. My cash set will have two. One to a certain person who assisted me a ton and one for sale. I've never been huge on giving samples, but I appreciate people who do it. The tourney set will by far have the most samples going out I've ever done.

Yup, for my Club Hel cash set I have made a modified inlay with a small marking, specifically for the samples I offered. They are too small to be able to tell a sample apart from a live chip across the table, but if there ever are any miscounts at cashout, I can find the source.

For my other cash set I didn't make special samples.

For tournament sets I generally think the risk is much lower than for cash, because it's harder to smuggle the extras into the game in a favorable moment and you still need poker skills to win. I wouldn't want to give out infinite amounts of samples for those either, but it doesn't make me that nervous.

Just notch, drill, or cancellation-stamp those chips you sell or give away as samples. Protects the game and the bank, and gives the chips a real casino feel of authenticity, too.

I have yet to hear of this happening. First, most folks only have a limited number of samples to offer. Second, those samples are distributed far and wide, and unlikely to make the pilgrimage back home. Third, I know of no PCFer that I’ve met at a meetup who would ever even have the idea cross their mind.

All well and good, but if one intends to host a meetup, only one chip has to come back to he bank to really screw the owner.

The risk isn't in the frequency, but in the expense when it happens just once. And unfortunately, people in our hobby develop addiction and desparation. Even people you know well can change year to year.

I am just saying I see where it makes sense for sellers to limit this downside.

Totally agree. Any custom cash value chips of mine larger than $1 that permanently leave the collection will have a small foil cancellation hot-stamp to denote that they are not live (NCV and/or inlay outline ring or something similar on one side). That secures the game while not detracting from the display value for collectors, and it's a relatively small expense that can be either absorbed or passed on.

Anybody who wants to redeem cash chips worth lesser amounts for face value, well, that's okay by me.

How does one put a foil cancellation stamp on a chip? Is it easy to do yourself?

Send 'em to @AK Chip, or you can have CPC do it in-house before they ship on some molds. Hot-stamping chips requires proper equipment and skill, although you could get a gold paint marker from a hobby/crafts store and do a similar defacing yourself.
