I've been brainstorming design ideas for a potential label for a solids set that I'm building, and I'm intrigued by the idea of using a subtle holographic element on the label. I have only seen plastic chips with holographic inlays though, and I'm not sure if gear or other sticker manufacturers offer the ability to add these elements to custom labels.

I imagine there are some sticker companies out there that produce these, but given how unusual this request is I'm not sure if I'll be fighting an uphill battle. Is anyone aware of a tried and true source for custom holographic labels?

Edit: looks like sticker mule produces custom holographic stickers (https://www.stickermule.com/products/holographic-stickers) so I'll be giving them a shot and reporting back. I know people have had success buying labels from them in the past and I'm hopeful their holographic stickers are no different quality wise.

I have some pretty cool stuff planned, but also 100% expect to have to work out some kinks along the way. I’ve got three plastic relabel projects in the pipeline LOL. There are companies that can print many kinds of stickers for you, but you will probably be very limited with the style and thickness of lamination offered. With @Gear you can rest easy knowing you are in capable hands and he will make sure the labels fit your chips, with the non-chipper sticker providers you need to be the expert. But yeah, I expect it can be done. :)

That's a great point... I am going to have to make sure to measure the recess depth/size on my chips, make sure the materials have appropriate thickness/texture, etc. I was hoping perhaps someone has tried this before and had some success, but I might have to do some searching and testing on my own to hone in on something that works. I'm hopeful that the sticker mule angle works out (see edit above) because people have had luck with using them for relabel projects and they can do fairly good work. I imagine there will be some bugs to work out in this process though.

Those sound like neat projects, I'd love to check out what you have in the pipeline.

My latest project, and the one I’m now starting with, involves Gemaco chips and a glitter ring label. My oldest project and next in line is with BG chips, and I want to make the artwork similar to the koi chips below. I also have a BJ set, thinking about using metallic gold for those… My biggest challenge will be that I want to really integrate the labels into the chips, so they don’t look like aftermarket stickers anymore. A tall order perhaps, but we’ll see how that goes. :ninja:

Wow. Beautiful chips!
Looks like they have a mold. Never saw this before.

Don't know if you still remember Chipshippie (Mark)...he had a lot of experience regarding holographic, metallic & glitter labels. Maybe you should hook up with him ?

@Thomacetti sure I remember Mark, but I should be pretty much set for my current/upcoming projects in the labels department. Mark made these Coconut Club labels for me and also the test print for the Siam Imperias, but IIRC he ran into some material issues after that and I never continued with the Imperias project.

Mark also made these labels for @cyril

Yeah, one of the best features of Matsui chips is the appearance of their decals for sure (unfortunately I don’t think they sell labels separately). I wonder if at some point there will be a 43mm tourney set GB really playing to this strength…

One problem with clear labels, at least to me, is that the glue may end up showing through, in other words whatever is behind the label might not look as clear as you would like.

Great point. I wonder how the discrepancy in color (between the chip and label background) of a clear label would compare with trying to color-match the label with the chip. I suspect that the end result with a clear label would be closer than a label that has had a color background printed on it but it's hard to say.

Sure, the color with clear labels will always be closer (or in a rare case a tie), but if the glue marks are showing it can also look messy.

Get Samples of course but I'm betting that a color-matched background will always look better than a clear background. Transparent doesn't mean invisible; I expect the clear sticker material will still be visually obvious and just end up looking weird.

... but it might work great! So Get Samples and let us know how they look. :)

I can see what you mean, it's a longshot but I'm curious enough to try it out. I've got a friend with a laser etching machine and now I'm tempted to ask him to cut out stickers using the same vector path that the sticker is produced with to allow for a "clear" background.

I quickly threw together a mockup for some custom holographic labels based on a concept I've been playing with ("Silverleaf" casino/card room/club because we have some giant silverleaf cotoneaster trees on our property) in order to get an idea of the quality of Sticker Mule's holographic stickers. I was inspired by the mirage label and just put this together in about 15 minutes.

I am really happy with the results! I obviously need to adjust the design in a variety of ways; the "Silverleaf" font is too small and hard to read, and the denoms are a bit too small, but I'm pretty excited about these! I'm definitely inspired to explore this idea more.
