Custom chip hall of fame thread. (1 Viewer)

As much as I'd someday love to own a killer set of Mapes, berg's Dunes Paulsons (both tourney and cash) are truly epic, and HQ is on a downward/upward Tropicana spiral.

When Aria goes broke, they've promised me their mint secondary racks, both cash and tourney. Then I woke up.

Ok, first let me say that nailing down the terms will be one of the responsibilities of the committee so I am stepping on toes a little here.

But to me this is slightly a question of nomenclature. Specifically I see this as "sets" vs a "setup". The Hitching Post is a broad setup with a lot of supporting items. To me the "set" is a group of chips sharing a common theme, purpose, and appearance. The chips should pass the eye test and it should be readily apparent they are part of a grouping.

Whatever rules we decide on their will have to be some room for interpretation just because of the nature of what we are reviewing. One size fit all rules will be difficult given the creative license of what is being judged.

Just throwing this out there but have you considered having a larger ruling committee for the first year atleast to discuss/debate the terms of voting in a set? I only ask because the first committee may have a completely different idea on what makes a set compared to the second or third group. I realize it will be more work. :)

I actually want the committee to be fairly lithe to avoid gridlock with a lot of very opinionated chippies. In this case I feel like more isn't really better. Too many chefs and all that jazz.

Ok so using a randomizer I picked five out of the ten willing names randomly. The HOF committee consists of:
Courage
Milo013
Links_Slayer
JButler
Gopherblue

I'm going to get a private thread for the conversation started by Tommy and will be along with the password when it is ready.

Thanks everyone!

An excellent and diverse collection of chip wisdom in that group.

No nooker? :p

I know that you just went random for the selection, but having Milo013 outside the US made this a truly International Hall of Fame.

Happy to have an international member. I had to go random. I didn't want to put ANY qualitative measure on who "deserved" to be on the committee.

The idea of starting with sets is good, I think it will definitely be beneficial to see all of the really nice sets all in one place. I do think that there needs to be some explanation about why the sets chosen are in the HOF though, a description of the inspiration and the planning and design would be beneficial for people wanting to read about them and understand WHY they are great sets.

Casino sets should be fair game if they are available for personal use, if someone put together a set that is really rare or really beautiful that should be at least a subcategory.

Lastly the numbers have to be kept low enough that this is a difficult thing to achieve and only the set of chips should be taken into consideration, not the bounty/etc chips because that is more an addition than the set itself. I think in the beginning this needs to be as simple as possible and it will be enough work as is but it will be really great to see some really quality sets all in one place.

It will also help people like me who come into this with a big love for poker and the game and want to take a step to the next level. A lot of the institutional knowledge that you guys have is in a database somewhere but not always really easily achievable. I think for a hall of fame to really sing it needs to be accessible to people who just wander in off the virtual street and wind up learning about something they could grow to really enjoy.

I've already spoken with Tommy. When completed the actual HOF thread will be stickied and locked in the photo gallery. It will be permanently front and center for exactly the purpose of pointing new members to it.

That is awesome.

I also like the idea that there could be a little description from the set's designer/owner explaining what they were thinking/inspirations for their set design. If such a comment isn't available, then something from the HoF committee. Many people discuss their inspirations in design threads or when they roll out their pr0n, so this wouldn't be too big of an extra task. If no design notes or inspiration can be found (say it was a casino set induction) then committee members could explain why it was included (or a brief history of the casino in the casino set example).

In short, the International Poker Chip Hall of Fame should be more than Pr0n, it should be educational and fun to visit.

The international poker chip hall of fame would eventually need some interactive exhibits where visitors could shuffle the chips, push a stack into the middle of a table, splash a pot, etc!

I think seeing my name on the list proved that "qualitative measures were NOT your priority . . .

Tommy is working on using the oculus rift to make a virtual reality program that allows you to play with any of the sets enshrined in the HOF.

Tommy how is that coming along?

Worth considering. At the very least there will be basic info on who made the set, when it was made, designer, etc. If the set owner is still around we could look into getting more info.

There will be no commentary from the masses within the thread however. Just the description and pure unadulterated chip porn for each one enshrined.

Very well selected HOF committee. And the subject of this thread and the whole idea is marvellous. I just have not had time to go it all through, but will read it all in Holidays (Have some spare time. I have to go back to work already on January 14th 2015 ;))

Something that I think is a mystery to a lot of people (myself included) is WHY a set is so attractive. I realize that this is almost a person's personal reaction to a set or chip a lot of the time but having a description of why a specific spot progression looks great or a label design is really interesting would be really neat to hear. I don't know who exactly could explain things like that to sets where the maker or designer is no longer able to share that information but perhaps then the committee would make some of the statements made in favor of a certain set could be included.

Something like this really could go a long way to pumping up the custom chip market. Compared to the poker chip market in general it's fairly small but I feel part of that is because it's so daunting. Sitting down with almost unlimited choices to design something that costs 3-4x a "good" set of standard poker chips is really hard. Making the process easier to understand for people would really be helpful to lower the hurdle of entry to custom chip set excitement!

And docents. Young, hot, sexy docents.

Has anyone seen Courage?
I think he has been interviewing more potential docents.

That was specifically his duty and why he was "randomly chosen" for his role.

I must say I respect his game. He is surprisingly successful for finding hot young female help for being a creepy old guy.

I wondered why my ears were burning. And yes, I'm acting in your best interests! :p

Nomination process starting to get somewhere. Formal parameters coming in the next couple of days
